97 years ago to the day, we were about to win the FA Cup for the 4th and probably last time with Super Freddie Tunstall about to hit the winner in a 1 nil win against Cardiff. A bit of symmetry re this weekends result....

This photo wasnt the goal, it was this one below. It was a mistake from Cardiff's Harry Wake that cost his team the match. United's Harry Pantling hit a long pass down the pitch towards an area of the field Wake was covering but he hesitated and failed to cut out the pass, leaving the ball to fly past him to Fred Tunstall who scored the only goal of the game. Following the match Wake was chastised in the Welsh media with headlines such as "Wake Not Awake" on newspapers across the country and it took several years for him to live down his mistake

Is that fellowfields team

According to Wikipedia, at the end of the match, United fans flooded onto the field and the goalscorer Tunstall was carried on the shoulders of spectators in celebration. The team were presented with their winner's medals by the Duke and Duchess of York in the Royal Box and the cup was awarded to United captain Gillespie. He described himself as "the happiest man in Britain" upon receiving the trophy.

What a guy, and what a team.❤️

Incidentally wasn't Super Freddie Tunstall and Jimmy Dunne the original dynamic duo who were the Deane / Agana, Edwards / Morris of their day? I think I read that the papers (well the Green Un) used to regular have the headlines 'Tunnie Dunnit' referring to the fact that Tunstall set em up and Jimmy Dunne put em away. Top boys. Makes you proud to be a Blade doesn't it.

TunnyDunnit headlines were between 1929 and 1932

Not much chance of the Duke of York presenting any medals in the near future.
