If anyone is interested in statistics....

:tumbleweed:

I started to ponder earlier in the evening whether our relatively recent decent cup runs may have inadvertently added to the pressure and expectations surrounding United. After much searching I couldn't see any easily available stats that may inform me so I set about pulling together the number of times a club has reached the 1/4 finals or later of either the FA cup or League cup... Three hours later and I have it completed but I'm not sure how I interpret the results at this stage!

The one thing I did manage to establish is that I'm actually glad we don't have the kind of record of some teams like Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United - they've reached a cup quarter final at least on average nearly every year - how boring, expensive and time consuming that must be!

I decided to stick to the last 20 seasons for no real reason other than it's a nice round number and should show relatively recent trends... Here's what I managed to work together, I hope someone finds it interesting:

from 1976 to 1989 we never got further than the 3rd round .

1976 to 1985.

We got the the 4th round in 1986, 1987 and 1988.

Our FA Cup record is pretty good for the last 20 years when compared to other clubs at our level. League cup, not so much.

Mind you, I'm not sure the list is right...it says Newcastle have only reached the last 8 once in 20 years and I can recall them playing in 2 finals in that time...

I think they were given a bye straight to the final one year for being the world's biggest club and everybody's second team.

You're right! Apologies that should have read Newcastle 7 and Millwall 1 which rather changes the final table! I'll correct it now. Thanks

I really like a good cup run, FA for preference, so thanks for the info - we've performed very well in the FA haven't we?

We have done well. I think that may possibly be a factor into why the younger generation of Blade maybe has a higher expectation of us.. Along with many other factors at least.
