coutts is a really tidy player with fantastic feet.. he is probably brilliant in five a sides when he doesn't have to run. however his legs have gone and so on 11 vs 11 on a full pitch he struggles.. hammond does things that i, as a mere mortal, cannot understand so i won't bother trying

Let's see if we can get him shipped off to the states to play indoor soccer . Save us some money , as you say super pig , he struggles at 11 a side .

If Hammond and Coutts were fit , athletic , and mobile , we would be half way there for a promotion chasing side . Unfortunately both are past there sell by date , which Weir , Clough , and Adkins have taken punts on players and back fired , failed big time , but still being picked.

What was annoying for their equaliser is that Reed has a little look and sees he's lost his man well before the cross, but does nothing to rectify it and ambles into the area completely unconcerned. Still, at least it didn't stop him getting on the ball and creating things afterwards.

McEveley is the second defender, McGahey is marking their no 12, but what about Basham? He seems to be ball watching and just gets sucked into our goal. A bit more awareness of the run into the box and depth marking would have been nice.Skjermbilde 2016-03-26 21.32.52.png

This Doyle quote was never sourced and could've just been made up. (The Collins one I've never heard.)

And anyway can they do it in the arena?

What's got into you WHF? Chill. You know I don't make things up.

I remember when the Doyle "quote" first surfaced and it didn't sound particularly genuine at the time. Been following it ever since. A bit like Victor Lewis Smith(?) and the Captain Pugwash story.

I feel quite chilled, literally, as it's freezing where I am right now and I haven't got a coat.

WHF. I heard the Doyle interview myself. When a professional says something like that about a fellow player it is a huge respect. It encouraged me no end because I always saw Coutts' skill set and always hoped he would get fitter with more games. Collins said it this season some time and I heard that too and I was gobsmacked because I would never have thought Coutts would be Collins' sort of player. These were not jargon or glib comments emanating from media training and occupational duties, these were comments which the two senior pros chose to say about Coutts as a positive in a very negative environment, so it meant something.

I'm not one for trawling the internet as I wouldn't know where to look, but there must be other posters who heard them, if so please make WHF a happy man and say so. Or can somebody trace them somehow? Both Collins and Doyle were major Blades and thorough professional clubmen and it's the sort of thing blokes like that do. That's why I respected them both immensely and always will and that's why I always stuck up for them both through thick and mostly thin on here.

Victor Lewis Smith admitted he'd been conned. Admitted he'd been taken in by simple innuendo.

A bit like you with Adkins waffle.

Flynn, Basham, Reed have all talked about the value Hammond has brought to the team – I'm not sure the testimony of Collins & Doyle exactly counts for much. Given the various cliques that appear to have developed in the squad in recent seasons, whenever I've heard one player praise another it's usually seemed as though they simply get on well.

None of this really matters of course – whatever one player thinks shouldn't affect what we see with our own eyes, and in the case of both Coutts and Hammond it's obvious disappointment. You can perhaps excuse Hammond in that he's trying his best but seems let down by his body – Coutts is more frustrating as he shows hints of being a decent player every once in a while but rarely seems to actually put the required effort in.

If Hammond was fit, athletic and mobile he'd keep up with opponents often enough to pick up two bookings in the first half*. Usually what prevents him from kicking them is that they're five yards away by the time he's turned around.

*if a referee actually gave out worthy yellow cards. Hammond deserved two or more by full time in most games I've seen him play.

Pos Nige just wants a couple of his buddies around him to keep the Clough living dead at bay - who can blame him.

Sadly Hammond is past his sell by date. He's not going to get another deal at Leicester so who knows what will happen next.

This I disagree with: I can't see it therefore it's not there.

A few alternatives

I can't see it therefore:
  • I need to open my eyes
  • I need to take my blinkers off
  • I need to look harder
  • I'm looking in the wrong place
I can't see it and I can't possibly be mistaken. Not sure about that.

OK. You and Woodwardfan remember it the same way.

My (genuine) memory of the Doyle quote is it appearing in a post along the lines of: My mate talked to Doyle in a hotel and he said Coutts was the best player in training.

Maybe I was mistaken.

In case the Captain Pugwash reference doesn't make sense. The story is that Victor Lewis Smith made up a rumour about Captain Pugwash to see how far it would spread. And it spread a long way. (Turns out he says he repeated it inadvertently but at the time it seemed more like a prank than a mistake.)

The British Captain Pugwash animated television series, which originally aired on the BBC between 1958 and 1967, is widely believed to have featured characters with risqué maritime names such as Master Bates, Seaman Staines, and Roger the Cabin Boy.

[...]

In the Young Guardian of September 13 [1991] we stated that the Captain Pugwash cartoon series featured characters called Seaman Staines and Master Bates, and for that reason the series had never been repeated by the BBC. We accept that it is untrue that there ever were any such characters. Furthermore, the series continues to be shown on television and on video. We apologize to Mr. Ryan, the creator, writer and artist of the Captain Pugwash films and books. We have agreed to pay him damages and his legal costs.

Manager who shouts at his players from the touch line during a match is now a bully??

Same guy who is accused of being too nice, too close to the players, a yes man and too much of a physio !

This forum is amazing at times.

You couldn't make some of this complete shit up.

Dnblade and Woodwardfan

Fwiw found the post where I first saw the Doyle quote on Coutts. (Didn't take long, just Searched Doyle Coutts best training and there it was.)

From BM:

Doyle's Thoughts On Clough

Doyle apparently with some Blades today, had several things to say about Clough.

Taken from Twitter:

"Confirmed majority of rumours that have done the rounds about him!

Also that they DIDNT practice set pieces in training!

The treatment towards Doyle was disgusting- he found out he'd been released at supporters club dinner when mal brannigan asked him what his plans were for next season and he didn't have a clue what he was talking about.

And the way he found out he wasn't playing in away matches was when clough walked down the bus and said to him that he may as well just stay on here because he wouldn't be involved in the game.

Also told of his treatment of the youngsters.

Apparently behind the scenes morgs is hardly involved and if he could clough wouldn't have had him there at all.

The stuff that Doyle said really has sounded like clough's a bully boy- the youngsters are terrified of him.

One thing he did say in clough's defence was that coutts is by a mile the best in training.

Another thing that came out was Collins suggested to Diego to leave the club (is that a hint as to the fallout?)

Apparently it was clear he loved sufc, the fans and particularly Morgs.

Whether Doyle exaggerated Idk, but 100% it was said I can guarantee you that much."
