Richard Cresswell has agreed to take part in a gruelling cross-country cycle ride to raise funds for two members of his family suffering from a rare form of epilepsy.
The striker, whose nieces Evie and Darcie Chapman have been diagnosed with Dravet Syndrome, will be joined on the journey from Morecambe to Bridlington by teammate Nick Montgomery, Jonathan Greening of Nottingham Forest and the twins’ father Mark.
Revealing they hope to complete the 170 mile trek in only 48 hours, Cresswell said: “We wanted to do something that wasn’t just physically challenging but also mentally challenging as well.
“The idea is to try and improve awareness of this rare illness and raise money for research, better treatment and medication".
“It’s going to be tough going – particularly if the weather is bad – because we’ll be looking to cover about 85 miles each day".
“We all like to try and keep ourselves fit though".
“Monty is like Lance Armstrong whenever he gets on a bike so I’m sure he’ll be okay!”
Cresswell added: “There are only around 300 people who are known to have the syndrome in the UK and Evie and Darcie are the only known twins.”
The cycle ride is scheduled to start on July 5.
