Here's a video on youtube I hadn't seen before. It's Coventry v United from 24/11/73. We lost 3-1, but there is a fab goal direct from a free kick from Woodward and an equally good "goal" from a free kick by Currie, which is disallowed as the free kick was indirect. Also for those who think the mid 70's team could do no wrong, note the comical defending for Coventry's 2nd and 3rd girls (though the 3rd looks a mile offside).

This was John Harris last game in charge and was also played during the 3 day week followjng the miners' overtime ban earlier that month - hence floodlights could not be used and the game kicked off at 2 and finished in semi-darkness.

Just embedded the video for you Darren :)

Hopefully I'll get the chance to dig some old stuff out over the summer.

how could tc's free kick be indirect? it was a foul?.. anyways that brought back a few memories .. heh.. alan, alan woodward, alan woodward on the wi-ing :-)

Funny how some things never change.
Coventry hadn't scored for 11 hours before playing us. Nailed on.
Can't see how the freekick could have been indirect though.

It might have been for the obstruction rather than the trip, I suppose.

Did Currie have to talk Woodward in to taking that first Freekick? I know Woodward sometimes struggled with confidence.

I agree. Seems a straighforward trip on Bone by the Coventry player. However, the ref does have his arm up from the start, so must have seen it as obstruction.

Team for that game by the way was:

Connaughton

Badger
Colquhoun
Flynn
Hemsley

Currie
Speight
Salmons

Woodward
Dearden
Bone

Think it must be the long hair confusing you Dazzler. All look like blokes to me.

PS. With the reference to the power cuts perhaps you could get this on page 836 of the General election thread.

Lol, Freudian slip - obviously a one track mind.....

If KB had been manager he could have blamed injuries for the defeat.

"We were down to the Bone...."

(sorry!)

But, he could also have said,"... in Speight of that, if the ref had not disallowed Currie's perferctly good goal we would have got a result. I must say that I was disgusted by the way the Coventry players Badgered the ref when decision went against them and then tried to Currie favour with him after that awful tackle on Woodward that led to our goal..."

''Woodward with Gay Abandon'' ? I've just checked the United history books but I cant find any Gay Abandon
