Coutts

Why can't people see that it's horses for courses? It isn't really about being either FIRST TEAM or DROPPED to the bench. The squad is roughy 18 players, all interchanging depending on opposition. I reckon aside from JOC in defence, Fleck in midfield and Clarke upfront, there are no shoe ins, and those are only shoe ins because they're exceptional. You'll notice all three have started every game they're available. Every single other player is part of a squad and is just as important on the bench as they are starting.

CCV - sometimes has been preferred at RCB to Basham if Bash is required further up the pitch. This has worked well at Hillsborough and when covering injured midfielders. He's also been played at CB over Wright at the start of the season in games against big physical centre forwards like Bolton. Also been used on the bench to be able to cover CB, RCB and RB at a push.

Duffy - One of our most effective players, and probably the best player in the league for me. Yes I said it. Should he start every week? I'd like him to, but again, he's been used effectively off the bench at Hillsborough, or to change the game/shape coming on at 65 minutes. He's also been used out wide once or twice, to accommodate Brooks to great effect. That's allowed the emergence of a £10 million plus asset, so i'd say he was doing an important job for the squad by being on the bench occasionally.

Sharp/Don - Both are good players but very different. HOW can you lot not see that every game is different against different players set up in different ways ON DIFFERENT SIZED PITCHES. Does it just go completely over your heads that Donaldson looks an absolute world beater on the big pitch at Sunderland and the big pitch at Villa and then turns into a conference player on the tiny pitches at QPR and Forest where he has no space to run into? It'll be you lot that come on here like fickle 8 year old lads saying 'HE'S RATE GOOD HIM' one week then 'HE'S SHIT HIM' the next. Meanwhile, Billy is quality on a small pitch where he can play to his strengths of finding half a yard of space where there is none and finishing his dinner, but does look anonymous on bigger pitches (not for want of trying, it's just not his game). That's why we need both and if Sharp starts against Bolton it's NOT a case of 'HAVE U SEEN TEAMSHEET?? WILDERS DROPPED DONALDSON WHATS HE THINKING' it's horses for courses and Donaldson is going to be used on 70 if Bolton are chasing the game and leaving 2 defenders on the half way line and going for it. That means they're susceptible to the counter if we bring on some fresh pace.. like Don. Have you lot not been watching football for the last fifteen years? It beggars belief.

People are so quick to judge without taking in ANY external factors to what makes players have good games and bad games. I was saying when Lunny was having a tough time (after 2 games, lol) that perhaps the reason he wasn't playing well and settling in was that he was only getting a look in late in games to see the result out, or starting cup games where the team sheet was completely unrecognisable with ten changes and he was in the middle of it. I said if he was in the middle with Fleck and Duffy, two quality wing backs either side of him, infront of a settled solid defence and with two in form strikers infront of him, we would see a different player because he'd have the freedom to do his job. It's not rocket science is it. Look back at that team vs Leicester he started in. Ched, Carruthers, Lavary etc.

Stop being so polarised. It's not Brexit.

A Coutts Lundstram midfield sounds very appealing when he’s back. But then you remember John Fleck as well. That’s a big decision fuck me.
fleck > lundstram anyday. how is that even a contest? he may have been good for past 2 games but fleck has been phenomenal for around the past 50

The real positive whether you are a member of the Tyler Durden Sharp love in or not, is we have great options.

Only last week some people were suggesting Donaldo should be gone in January and in the last 2 games he has given us another dimension up top. Yes he scores goals, but his hold up play and work rate when we don't have the ball has also contributed to our upturn.

This doesn't mean Sharp is finished it simply means we have a great option on the bench and he needs to win his starting place back.

The same applies in midfield. Lundstram gets better with each game and at 23 Chris Wilder might just have unearthed another gem. I do concur with views above that we should be looking for a back up in January as we do seem susceptible to losing midfielders this season!

For me there is nothing to argue about. Let's just enjoy the great work that CW and his management team are doing, this is one of the best and most rounded squads we have had in a very long time.

There is however a conflict of opinion from player and manager. Wilder stated out for the season but more recently Coutts himself stated he was ahead of schedule and hoping to be back playing before the end of the season.
The pressure may come if we are in the play offs and the lad is training and pushing himself to get in the side. Wilder may be tempted to play him a bit too soon if Coutts is making himself available when he will be desperate to play.
Yeah I noticed that. When you think about it, it makes sense for Wilder to take the pressure off completely by assuming he's out for the season, that way it's a pleasant surprise if he makes it back for any playing time at all.
If you've seen any of the shoreham view vlog interviews this season with the players, when asked who in the squad is most competitive, they answer Coutts. The guy is clearly a born sportsman and cannot wait to get back into the side and playing again.

Really, that's exactly what we need and exactly how it should be. A player who can't wait to be playing for us again, and a management team who will take care of him and make sure he's completely ready before throwing him back into the fray.

My worry about Coutts is he took ages to regain his form after his last serious injury.

Don't tell anyone on here that though. Most totally disregarded the fact he'd been out for 15 months a short while prior to us signing him and could only see the crapness shining through, not the class.

I don't think you need to worry too much though. This is a relatively minor injury compared to the previous. If, as we've been led to believe, it's a "greenstick" fracture then it's entirely possible he'll play again this season.

I thought Coutts and Sharp did fuck all yesterday. Totally anonymous. Fleck too. Didn't notice him all game. Brooks had no impact too...
And if Deano an' Fjortoft can't or won't, get shut of em both. Preferably in short order !

It crossed my mind but in fairness to Coutts, a couple of our previous managers wouldn’t have helped him much on the regaining confidence front particularly Adkins, he’d even set Messi back a couple of years.

Never has a bloke spoke so much about the positives and yet deliver such negative trash.

I’m with you on that one, hence why it’s importnat we get a midfielder in this January and remove any pressure to put Coutts back in before he is ready. A fully fit, confident and relaxed Coutts is what we need, not the one that arrived from Derby.

As cover for Lundstram? I think Lundstram, Fleck, Duffy will be the favoured midfield three for a while.

Two important games coming up over a 48 hour period. Both matches present their own challenges. We will see lots of players from our squad getting game time. Wilder alluded to this at the end if his interview.

Duffy is on fire at present and yet a Carruthers is just as important in order to replace Duffy after say 65 or 70 minutes in order for him to rest and ready to go in the next game.

The players have signed up to this. They are ALL integral to our success this season.

Lundstram’s progression is increasingly rapid though. By the time Coutts is back who knows how good the lad will be.
that's true, but fleck and lundstram will be good until the season's done

Cover and competition. We have one long termed, evil can’t afford another without cover.

I'm assuming you mean on this forum, since there was only one player the fans ran to raise onto their shoulders at Northampton last season.

I had a hug with Simon Moore first, must really hate Billy.

Good post but it would be interesting in the PL since all pitches there....are the same size! :)

It was good to see Couttsy sat behind the dugout yesterday, moving fairly sharpish on his crutches, and in and out of his seat quietly, with his hood up. Other crocked heroes would've been milking the sympathy and attention for all it was worth, but not Sir Paul. Modest on the pitch; modest in the crock tank (not croc tank). Top player, top man.

im struggling with some of this

heres a thread saying how can we drop anyone to accomodate Fleck on saturday and Coutts is a shoe in on his return ,,,, yet ,,, we need to spend money to bolster the team

seems we need to buy someone to put pressure on Fleck to get on the bench
