Get duffs signed back up, i know hes a few years older but he doesnt need pace, just plop him behind the strikers and let him weave his his magic, lovely footballer and with hindsight players of his ilk are really hard to find!

Agreed that there was a year left on his contract but what was being asked for is less clear cut depending on whether you believe Duffy or Wilder's account.

As much as I’d like to see him back his boat has sailed and I bet he wishes he never listened to his dad.
He turned down a great season in the premier league with us, shame it ended like it did

My issue with the 'greedy Mark Duffy' rhetoric is that at the time an infallible Chris Wilder instigated it, so fans jumped on it without knowing the full facts (like myself I may add).

If Duffy asked for parity alongside other, vital members of our back to back promotion side (e.g. Basham, Sharp, JOC, Fleck) then he had a fair shout imo as he proved himself pivotal to our success despite numerous, failed attempts to dislodge him.

I can't remember the contract situations at the time but if, say, Duffy looked at Billy Sharp and thought "I carry similar value to the team as Billy, so I want a similar deal" then that'd have been fair. If he looked at Billy and thought "I deserve more then him" then that's a different story.

I also have some sympathy regards Duffy’s wage increase demands.

Wilder often said “perform first on the pitch and the financial rewards will come later”

Think it’s important to realise that Duffy spent most of his career in league 1 at fairly small clubs.
So he won’t have made a lot from the compared to other PL or even Championship players.
He was also quite old and entering the twilight of his career.

His agent probably thought It was the ideal time to cash in and earn himself a final relatively lucrative contact.
However for some reason Wilder took it personal and froze him out......however that’s CW’s prerogative..being tough on players can be a positive.

Actually the big pay rises is one of the factors for our downturn in form....Fleck hasn’t been the same player since he won his big pay rise.
 
Wilder gave Coutts the option of a 1 year deal with us for the PL but with no promise of game time. Wonder if he regrets not signing that. A very tidy player but one it seems has to have the right players around him.
 
If I recall correctly, Wilder had asked the players not to discuss new contracts until the season had started. Obviously he had a lot of other stuff to sort out and it’s easier to go to the board and negotiate better contracts for the players once they’d shown they were capable of playing in the PL. Duffy decided to ignore that. I don’t consider him greedy, he obviously wanted to secure his future, but impatient and a bit stupid. I suspect he was concerned there wouldn’t be much of a role for him on the PL and was probably worried that he might be a bit part player and then released at the end of the season.
 
I was a big fan of Duffy and Wilder, but virtually from the word go CW always seemed like he wanted to get a replacement in for Duff. First JTW he brought in Carruthers, then Ricky Holmes, then Freeman and finally Berge, and for me none of them have been anywhere near as good as Duffy. Only one who has got close is Diddsy and that's more as a drop off striker.

If Duff was playing I always thought he was worth the entrance fee alone. If there's any gas left in the tank, even just for 30 minute cameos I'd get him back for a year. Certain players just click at certain clubs, Duffy and United (i'd say Bramall Lane too as he always seemed to do it against us for the oppo too) just clicked. And of course he slayed the bouncing ;)

Have to agree with every single word put there
Mark Duffy was an incredible footballer, the like I’d never seen in 30 years at the Lane.

just my opinion - but always felt as if Wilder had something personal against Duffy, almost a jealousy that the fans would show more love/appreciation towards Duffy than him....
 



Wilder's stance on Duffy wanting an extension wouldn't be so questionable if it wasn't for the totally different way he handled Lundstram not wanting an extension, and also signing an extended much more lucrative contract himself not long after his previous extended more lucrative contract. With the players brought in after promotion, you could see why Duffy might want some assurances about his role, but it'd depend on how he went about that whether Wilder was right or wrong to freeze him out.

You could tell Wilder was a bit jealous of Duffy, but even going back to when he first arrived you could tell he was jealous of Brayford because right backs shouldn't earn that much money or be popular with fans (so dropped him after a couple of games then a year later got rid after shipping him out on loan and his online minions spinning tales of Brayford being a parasite draining money from the club).

Either way, I'd rather have a past it Duffy back than a past it Wilder.

Had this argument elsewhere re Duffy/Lundstrom, something has gone on behind the scenes, and I would argue the performances would suggest its ongoing, if Wilder started it or failed to address it, him leaving hasn't seen a change in attitude, the criticism/blame re the training facilities doesn't add up, nothing has changed in that regard since the Championship & same as the first year in the PL , injuries loss of form and confidence haven't helped, but these are usually temporary, the loss of identity, belief and team spirit has been pretty much a regular featre all season
 
Duffy had been binned out by 4 clubs in 2 seasons. Each one at a lower standard than the last. Perhaps it’s him? 🤔

The thing that impressed me so much about Duffy was his balance and body swerve whilst keeping full close control of the ball.
He lacked pace but used to dribble past players with ease....he’d just glide past them (almost in slow motion) as though they weren’t there.

The last time I saw a player with such balance and fantastic dribbling ability was Alex Sabella.
I reckon both would have been top class 5 a side footballers.

However like Sabella, Duffy would have spells going missing in some games...as though he wasn’t even on the pitch.
Thats the bit Wilder didn’t like...he wanted him to offer more to the team when out of possesion, Duffy was terrible at trying to tackle.

The key difference between Lundstram and Duffy being that one was 34 years old and the other was 26 years old.

Brayford’s account of his time here also differs from yours but apart from that...
 
Truthfully coz I don't get to games anymore when I did watch us Duffy always looked shite he must have just played shit when I was watching apart from bouncing day of course,saying that I always struggle on footie manager to so maybe I'm just not very knowledgeable about football 😂😂😂

Wilder’s animosity towards both Mark Duffy and Billy Sharp was there for all to see for around two years before the incident with the former which gave him the excuse to both show him the door and try to paint him in a very bad light in the eyes of the fans and football in general .

As for the latter , I’ll never forget a high profile interview in which when asked about him , he sarcastically replied “Ah yes , Mr. Sheffield United - Billy Sharp wants what’s best for Billy Sharp “ then hurriedly adding “ Er , there’s nothing wrong with that “ when he realised he’d overstepped the mark .
