Despite only playing about 4 minutes here and there this season

he has the second most assists in the squad

think about it blackwell!

Fair enough, but he still needs to be involved more.

If I were blackwell, i'd ask Cotts where and how HE thinks he'd be most effective. Play him there for 3 games and see what happens. If he can get second most assists when hes being told where to play, then imagine the result if he's playing somewhere he's confident in his own ability!

As a winger, I'd assume this would be on the wing... exactly where he has been playing :)

The problem is, Blackwell isn't going to go to Cotterill and say:

KB: "So Georgy-Best Cotts, how shall we play to suit you?"

DRGBC: "Well gaffer, I can't tackle for shit so you'd need someone defensive alongside me and behind me..."

KB: "Right... right... carry on..."

DRGBC: ".... and I'm as nesh as a winter's day, so the way you play is by all just giving the ball to me. Because I don't want to get involved and get it myself like... get my boots all muddy isn't it..."

KB: "Erm... right...."

DRGBC: "... only, I'm not very good at anticipating when someone is going to give the ball to me, or where I need to be in relation to this travelling ball. So I need it inch-perfect, to my feet, every single time and the players have to shout my name, or boyo, before they kick the ball just so I'm ready."

KB: "Remind me how much I paid for you again?"

;)

I'm slightly taking the piss... but Cotterill could be an extremely good player if he had a bit of Monty in him.

And with that revelation, I shall leave my post there!

I assume by a bit of Monty you mean the inability to play the simplest of passes, get in everyones way, run around like a headless chicken, occasionaly win the ball but then lose it and commit a foul trying to win it back andva general lack of a footballing ability?

I assume by your description of Monty you spend most of the match with your eyes closed or just go with the pre-conception that he's crap?

The problem being with assist stats is they often don't tell the full story. They are direct assists, so any other good moves or dangerous balls into the box that weren't met directly by the eventual goalscorer aren't included.

He's played far more than 4 minutes here and there, but sadly isn't showing anywhere near the form he did last year, if he did, we'd be laughing.

Its not a pre-conception, its years of watching us waste a place in the starting XI with that joker. I cannot get my head around what people see in him, al they say is 'he tries so hard and would do anything for the club'. So would I, but it wouldnt make me a proffesional footballer. How can someone play for so many years and have absolutley no-idea of positioning. How much how much better we would be with an actual footballer in the middle of the park?

All I can think is that he must have some other very good 'talents' to keep our last three managers picking him.

Sorry back on subject: I dont know whats happened to Cotts, on loan he was a superstar and then as soon as he was our the form dropped. I know he isnt a big bloke but how can he be such a wimp?

To be honest he has been playing better the last few weeks, but ever since the good old Browny / Tonge etc days our midfiled hasnt been upto much.

We have finally got some decent footballing midfielders Howard, Speed (when fit), Hendrie (god knows why they wont pick him), Quinn why do we need a holding midfielder?

We are supposed to be one of the 'big' teams in this league, I would like to see us go for it a bit more.

I'd say he has a far better idea of positioning than his midfield team mates. He ALWAYS bust a gut to make himself available, always covers, tracks players, tries to get forward. When he's won a tackle, 90% of the time nobody makes themselves available for him, as its usually him making the space/freeing himself up.

Such as Brian Howard? we'd be worse off. Every team needs a player like Monty to do the dirty stuff that few people notice.

...and premiership managers looking at him. During his last injury we had a solid enquiry from a current premiership boss at an established premiership club. It got as far as the player talking to the club in question only to be scuppered by the injury being worse than first thought. The club doctors had missed the extent of his foot injury.

Montgomery does a job for the blades. While ever Blacky is playing Squinn on the left wing we need to be playing Montgomery in the middle to give us cover. Im not doubting the guys passing, at times, is embarrasing but I reckon if you could get the statistics of our results with him in the team, and without him we would all see that United win more games with Montgomery in the team than without him.

Im sure that the left wing is one of the 2 positions Blackwell is talking about at the minute. We're desperate for someone on the left.

It seems like he's never going to get a chance now anyway, but surely giving Carney a try (especially in the Cup game) is worth a shout. If it doesn't quite work, fair enough. But I dont think he's had a fair crack at United....

im rambling now......

With regards to his passing, I'd by lying if I said he successfully passed the ball 100% in all circumstances.

That is because no player actually does. Gary Speed, the seasoned professional that he is, was incredibly guilty of over-hit passing on occasions. Similarly, Stephen Quinn. However, because people put Monty under a microscope, they immediately remember every single thing he does wrong and allow it to over-shadow the things he does right.

Like Foxy said, some people go to the game and how they perceive the players beforehand often blinkers their view, regardless of how the player actually plays in that match. Monty could play a blinder, score a hattrick and pull his arse out to the Wednesday Kop... some people would still point to one pass in the match that went astray and say he's a joke of a player.

Similarly, Cotterill can do no wrong for some people.

As I said, he'd be an amazing player if he got stuck in more. But at the minute, he's a bit of a luxury to play against teams who come at us because he cannot (or doesn't want to) get stuck in and help out defensively too which leaves his fullback exposed.
