Now that we are half-way through, and have played everybody, who are your contenders for automatic promotion?

For me:
Bournemouth (storming up the league, got Russian zillionaire chairman)
Brentford (consistently playing well, good offensively)
Tranmere (despite poor defensive, think Ronny will sort, good offensively)
Donny (even though lost their manager, have a good team)
and, the Blades.

Closely followed by:
Coventry (Robbins got them playing well, just signed good striker Clarke from Charlton.)
MK Dons (will be there or thereabouts but seem tad in consistent)
Swindon (on-fire at present, not sure how long this will last, have also be inconsistent)

A third of the division? Wow, that's really sticking your neck out :D

For the record I said Donny and MK Dons at the start of the season and I don't think that will be too far off.

Bournemouth will win it.

It'll be a right scrap for 2nd, fingers crossed it's us!

Seen Bournemouth more than United this season and they will be there or thereabouts. They're by no means the finished article, but Eddie Howe has got them going.

I predicted Fake Wimbledon and Preston at the start of the season but I think it'll be between us, Tranmere, Swindon and Bournemouth.

Well, Tranmere certainly won't be involved nor will Donny. If you think otherwise excellent odds are available at your local turf accountants.

Blades will be in the top two, accompanied by Swindon or Milton Keynes.

Must be said, when all's considered, I'd have to say Bournemouth and well, err...us ;)

Was talking to a mate at BPA the other day (he's good pals with an ex-Lane ST holder too) and he said he thought we should be walking this League - on paper I'd have to agree but then I reminded him I'd seen us play this season and it never works that way...oh hum! It's the Blades-way after all

UTB!

Wholeheartedly agree, I've been very impressed with Wilsons January dealings so far and barring any 'too good to refuse' offers for any first team squad members, think we will be much stronger in the second half of the season.

I also believe that we will be way better equipped for the Championship than we were at the end of last season.

Us and Doncaster.

Tranmere will start sliding. Bournemouth and Brentford will come up a bit short. MK & Swindon.. Depends on runs but I think we'll be more consistent than all of them

I have been saying it is too tight to call for a while now. If I was a betting man and a neutral then I would go for Swindon and SUFC. However, being a cynical and a United fan, I am sure we will fook it up.

Olle's analysis:
- Tranmere: I still do not expect them to last, but how long have we been saying they will fall away? Yet they are still top and grinding out results. Some heavy results against suggest they are on the slide, but if they keep beating the shite teams then who knows. Play offs for me.
- Donny: Been quite impressed by Donny and think they have a good chance of top 2. Saunders going leaves them in unchartered territory. Not sure how much of it was him, as think they have a good squad for this level. They have significantly more resources than most at this level too.
- SUFC: highest wage bill is not guaranteed to land owt. Think our first team is probably the best in the league, but a couple of injuries to key players and we are struggling. Couple of good moves by Wilson so far in Dec/Jan should see us to go on and win the league. However we need to have a very good 2nd half of the season to even guarantee automatic.
- Swindon: the team for me. Looking at their goal difference (good sign of how well a team is playing), current form and emphatic results, performance in the last 18 months (averaging over 2 points a game for 2012) and the way they ahve easily stepped up to this level, then I think they will go up.
- Brentford and Bournemouth: I rate both teams and their managers. Both got good hungry, young players and pace and quality. However I justy cannot see them keeping up the steam they have built up. I would be surprised if either finished top 2, though think they will make up the other play off spots.
- MK Dons: fancied them at the start, but they have not been convincing. They are a weaker than last year, that is for sure. They are still in with a shout, but I think they will fall short.

But in summary, it is really close to call. I really do not think there is much difference between the 7 teams listed above.

Key statement for me. I'm convinced our first XI is a match and more for everyone else's. I'm also convinced our strength in depth is very poor and therefore injuries/suspensions in more than one area will derail us.

Don't really know about anyone else. Don't take any notice of the table until April as it only confuses the situation. The teams who are there and there abouts AND hit form at the end will be the ones to go up.

Olle and I had a chat about this at full time on Saturday. I can't remember my exact prediction (damn that beer...!) but it was based on these thoughts:

Balham's prediction

1 Sheffield United
Looking at the first team, the budget and the squad depth I have to make United favourites. Yes, we've not got great depth but we do have some - and that's more than most of the sides in the top 8. Key man: Jamie Murphy. If the new signing settles quickly he could be the difference between 1st and 4th.

2 Swindon Town
Much as it pains me to admit it, the side managed by il Porco Fascisto looks well set for a promotion charge. As with many of the sides in the top 8 I wonder how they'll react to a couple of defeats but it's the goal difference which has tipped the balance for me. Beating the then-top Tranmere 5-0 was an impressive result. Key man: Paolo di Canio. The maverick manager holds the key to this mercurial side.

4 Brentford
Dark horses at the start of the season - so dark that most people hadn't even considered them; Uwe Rösler has fashioned them into a skilful and hardworking outfit. Like most visitors, we were well beaten on our trip to Griffin Park - but their away form (more draws than us!) will see them fall short. However, unlike United I fancy them to win the playoffs after finishing third. Key man: Harry Forrester. While Clayton Donaldson leads the goalscoring charts, it's the intelligent play of Forrester which will make the difference.

4 Bournemouth
The reappointment of Eddie Howe has coincided with a sea-change in the fortunes of a side dispatched 5-3 at the Lane. Currently unbeaten in 15 league games, the test (as with Swindon) will be the reaction to United's victory at Dean Court in February (:)). Key man: Brett Pitman. The returning centre-forward will be hoping to fire the Cherries to the brink of automatic promotion.

5 Doncaster Rovers
Changing manager midway through the season will impact them but it's the squad depth which I feel will ultimately cost our neighbours. Currently sitting second but with indifferent home form before the visit of Tranmere, Swindon and MK Dons I think they'll fall away to a play-off defeat. Key man: Rob Jones. With the side struggling at home it's up to the big centre half to lead the defensive effort.

6 MK Dons
A side I expected a consistent push for automatic promotion from if I'm honest; the Dons haven't lived up to expectations. The return of Izale McLeod will provide them with goals but their form against the teams at the wrong end of the table will prove costly: they lost 4-1 at Bury, 3-0 at Scunthorpe and 4-2 at home against Walsall. Key man: Dean Lewington. Captain and talisman, the left back is one of the only remaining link to the old Wimbledon.

7 Tranmere
I've not been as vocal as some about Tranmere but I can't see them lasting the pace, particularly if the loans of some of their key players aren't extended past January. It'll be a painful fall and I think they'll drop out of the play-offs in the last couple of games.

8 Notts County
Currently underachieving in 13th, County won't get into the play-off positions but will pick up enough points against the sides above them to keep things interesting.

Us because we haven't been playing well consistently and will hit a purple patch at some point. It will be a scrap between Donny, MK, Brentford & Bournemouth for the second place. Tanmere will not even be in the play offs.

My big fear is that we will miss out due to defensive injuries. We certainly cannot afford any more Hartlepools.

I hope we win it but i've a sneaky feeling Bournemouth will win it. Top two will suffice.

Its the playoffs for sure, not got a big enough squad imo plus we always f*ck it up. I hope not because looking at the fixtures all the tough sides are at home bar 1 i think. Anyway i predict playoffs could be 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th. I will go with donny and bournemouth for top 2 and swindon, tranmere and mk dons to join us in the playoffs.

Just out of interest if we don't go up would anyone blame DW???

NO.

Him alone? Nah.

It's usually facile to blame an individual. In totting up the "blame" points I'd find it hard to give too much stick to Wilson for anything he's done. I generally approve of his signings, and he's shown himself to be pragmatic by playing to the squad's defensive strength rather than (last year's) attacking flair.

If I don't see an evolution towards more attractive football as this squad develops, then I'd get upset. But there's nothing in Wilson's track record to suggest he's Blackwellian by preference.

Tranmere will drop off, as will Brentford, If Donny lose Cots, they'll start to slip down the league.
Leaving us and bournemouth.

if we improve then we go up auto! if we play like we have been 1st half of the season then i think we'll just miss out and end up in the dreaded play-offs. utb

Can somebody please explain this Bournemouth thing to me please? Because I really can't see it.

Unbeaten in 14 games since Eddie Howe went back, won 10, drawn 4, for 31, against 12, points per game 2.43.
Swindon are also in form and the two sides play each other tomorrow so something has to give...
