Has anyone heard of a "utility player" ? They are useful at filling gaps where needed through suspension & injuries. Bashenbaur isn't too bad at this either having played CM, CD, RB and ball boy when needed.

At 6' 2" he could even end up being the target man if he is really versatile. He already knows where the nets are and how to find them.

Bring back Johnny 'ninja turtle' Ertl I say.

His performances for us should be enough warning to anyone about having to rely on 'utility' players as back-up.

I agree with your comments regarding Mr Ertle but can counter by mentioning Mssrs Woodward and Jagielka who could, and did, play in a number of positions including goalkeeper and doing a damn good job there too.

Having a good utility player has advantages as the choice of substitutes can be tailored to fill the fewer gaps in cover and also change styles and tactics

Woodward was before my time but I wouldn't really call Jags a utility player. Utility player to me means someone who can play in several positions but isn't good enough to start in any, that certainly can't be said for the likes of Jags.

Are you confusing "a Jack of all trades, master of none" with Utility player? I have not heard that limitation on a utility player's ability before. A player who played for Leeds and England who was capable of being international standard in a number of positions was Paul Madeley. James Milner has had similar experiences more recently for Man City, Liverpool and England.

Not really, it's just how I see them. The definition of 'functional rather than attractive' is always what I've always seen utility to mean in this case.

Paul Madeley, Trevor Cherry, and our own Colin Franks played in an era when it was handy to have a player on the bench who could deputise in more than one position. Many were not good enough in any one position to start, but there are still exceptions around (e.g. Jags, Barry, Dier)
Does seem odd to play Shaunessey at CB if it's not his position, particularly as CW must have known Jake Wright was signing.

It's all pointless anyway, he hasn't gone to La Manga.

Woody !?!?!!?
Accepting he went between the sticks in emergency in the days of no sub keepers he was an out & out winger who only played in midfield (& not especially well, albeit in a shite side) in his latter days when his legs / pace had gone

Anyone know if this lad Shaunessey has travelled to the training camp?
