He became a landlord for a while and the pub in question was the Bolton Castle on Tonge Moor Road, a local poet turned it into verse.

Harry Gregg just after t'final
Went into Nat's for a beer
Who returned his money and told him
We don't charge goalkeepers here.

He lived just up the road from me in the late seventies, in fact until he died. Frank Worthington lived up the road in the opposite direction, so two ex-England centre forwards within half a mile of each other and I doubt that will ever happen again unless I move to Wilmslow or Esher :)

Thanks for that Trig. As an aside, did you ver booze with Fred Dibnah who fixed a mannequin dummy on top of a mill chimney. He could drink most people under the table after a practice session at lunch time

As I said, Fan base is irrelevant. You perhaps have an axe to grind with Bolton.Anyway I am here to debate ,not to puff my chest out and win arguments at all cost.We all have our likes and dislikes where clubs are concerned. I dislike their Chairman personally but having been treated with respect by the Club and fans leads me to believe they are very decent people and have achieved Promotion on the back of results not attendances.
I still don'g get the "We are better fans than you argument" based on no empirical evidence and it seems a futile conversation.
What exactly is the point you wish to make? and how much time have you spent around Bolton fans?Or is your critique assumed from afar.
These are all rhetorical questions as I said healthy debate based on evidence and facts. Oh and I said 30 minutes drive not an hour which to some people can make all the difference.
I have spent many a time in a half empty Bramall Lane so I guess some of our fans are shit too, me included.People are fickle and increasingly difficult to make sense of.
Enjoy our club's success, it may be short lived. I hope and suspect not but let's try being galvanised by it and balls to whether other fans are better or not.
How about putting together a League table of all 92 clubs based on support and where and why they deserve to be where they are according to your theory?
Sorry fella but again, with all due respect to you it is a rather subjective and therefore futile argument based on opinion. Clearly we see things differenly which is healthy as long as we evade rash statements and harsh criticism without evidence.
Kind regards.

You stated in your first response to me last night that your partner is a BWFC supporter. I presume then that is why you wish to act an apologist for them, whilst stating that I 'perhaps have an axe to grind with Bolton'. Anyway, like you said, there is nothing wrong with healthy debate, you have your opinion on Bolton and I have mine.

Yup. I am no apologist and you will not find that word anywhere in my dialogue and I used the word "perhaps"

because I cannot be sure.
Hows the league tables coming on?;)

While we are here what is your opinion of coverage of Blades games on TV.Particularly Goal Rush.?

Some of our fans thought the Bolton love in cringeworthy and biased. I would like to create something more entertaining for our fans, by our fans and am garnering opinion on what we would like to see more of?

There is clearly room for expansion on the efforts on Sheffield TV, You Tube etc and think we need our own channel. We could include some live healthy debates that occur on here and other Blades related sites.
Be good to hear your thoughts.
Cheers Axel.

I'll say a well done Lion Of Vienna , I know a good few over your way and they're sound lads ,taking nothing away from fleetwood I'd rather see a club with 2k away support visiting the lane than a team with 2 mini buses ! Taking nothing away from the Bournemouth & Burtons of this world as they're there on merit but they're built on foundations of sand due to a small fan base , if they got relegated the support would dwindle & as soon as the sky money runs out on Bournemouths case what do you see happening to these teams ? Where as ourselves & the Boltons of the league have seen hard times and still retained a strong core support . Obviously after the match at ours yer chairmen & parky didn't do much to aid real Atkins with mardy arse comments , madines now walking around Sheff with a target painted on him and will get his due desserts me thinks ? That aside the lads I know over your way have all said fair play , worthy champions & promised me a few bevvies when I next see em so all the best pal

It really was stripped back to the barest core support during Bolton's hard times.

Like us, they've spent just the one season down in Division Four. When they were down there, and in the seasons just before, their crowds were down to 5,000 or less.

Still working on the league table mate!

I ceased to watch the goal rush earlier on in the season. IMO it is amateur hour personified. I much prefer the Alan Biggs Sheffield Live thingy, bit wooden at times but it is Sheffield focused at least. I appreciate you're not always going to get that with the national media but hey ho.

I'll leave the Bolton subject now because we can agree to disagree and obviously I think we have maintained a civilised discourse anyway on the matter.

There are a few Blades based blogs on YouTube that I have found worth watching. Check them out if you can.

Kind Regards and best wishes mate.

I agree Alfreton not trying compare numbers just that established clubs vs new kid on block teams , look at Yeovil now , came Into league , 2 promotions into championship & then 2 relegations down like a stone and I could see fleetwood been the same as there best own support is about 3k they are bankrolled by a chairmen ( who I've met ) that will realise this is as far as we can go , they only have a finite support they can pull and sustainability with that unlike ourselves and bolton for that matter, we all new what would happen to Wimbledon back in the day ( aside from MK dons farce ) when they fell from premier. When I think back to the Billy Mc Ewan days we probably hit our lows crowd wise even more than some of the third division seasons. Like I said I can't wait for next season and see some away support again after 6 seasons of of empty away ends , gonna be good crowds & atmospheres again & re-aquainances with some old friends lol . UTB .

You guys have absolutely smashed it, 100 points is incredible. Especially as you were bottom after the 4 games. Looking forward to the trip again back at Bramall Lane next season in the Championship. Also fair play to your fans, 31k is remarkable for league 1, we also managed to get about 24k today but there was no away fans! That's one thing I'm looking forward to with the Championship, some actual away followings! Good luck guys.
Just for clarity Attendance: 22,590 (451 Posh fans)

Hi Axel. I agree wholeheartedly on C5's lame offering which is what inspires me to create a channel of our own.
I like what Alan Biggs does despite the wooden nature and am going to garner his thoughts too.You are right ,we need the focus that suits our fans.
Theres a kid called Ollie McQuillin who produces some great vlogs, better than alot of the Adult examples in my opinion.
Anyway thanks for your kind words and I may well come and ask you for more feedback if you are cool with that.
Cheers for now. UTB

There's loads of threads slating Bolton. Why choose one from a Bolton fan wishing us congratulations to have another rant about them? It's not very magnanimous and makes us look like poor winners.

Thanks for that Trig. As an aside, did you ver booze with Fred Dibnah who fixed a mannequin dummy on top of a mill chimney. He could drink most people under the table after a practice session at lunch time

No, though I know some people who did, one of them was a violinist with the Halle, but he used to go up ladders with Fred, for fun. There's a picture of him doing just that in a biography of Fred.

I'm not dyed in the wool in these parts, I was here for a few years in the late seventies/early eighties and have been back here for four years this time around.

I had a pint with him once but he was on his way to Chatsworth steam fair in his traction engine so it wasn't a session. I didn't really know who he was but my mate recognised him as his dad watched him on TV. Nice enough bloke to chat to.
Annoyingly I've watched some of his programmes since and if I'd met him after I had I'd have had loads more to chat to him about, questions to ask him etc.

Hi Bush. Fred's house is now a Heritage Centre which caters for the enthusiasts whose hobbies were akin to his. It's a worthwhile visit if you are Engineeringly inclined.A guy called Leon Pownsey bought it and worked tirelessly to keep it as is and the memory of Fred,a legend round these parts, admired by many.Unsurprisingly perhaps, it has a bar in the Parlour that served a very decent pint of Bank Top Flat Cap though I cannot confirm that to still be fact.
If you haven't already done so you may wish to check the Heritage Centre website.
I think in many ways he typifies the hard working Northerner in much the same way as our lads in't steelworks and coalmines.
If you do bob over't Pennines for a visit give us a shout. There is plenty o Sherbet worth drinking.
Cheers
