Rumour today on twatter about Simon Lappin joining from Cardiff.

A 30 year old SCOTTISH defender/midfielder (seems to be some confusion) who only joined them from Norwich earlier this year.

Seems he has hardly played for Cardiff since the move. Ideal for us then?

I wonder if he will be like a rabbit in the headlights

.

left back/left mid so where are we buying him for?? Maybe we can play 2 left backs and 2 right back proper defensive.

I heard he has come on leaps and bounds since joining Cardiff (and only making 2 appearances :o)

If he is a left back and 30 years of age - won't he be "over the Hill?"

.

Interesting that he is bringing in yet another left back when he has Johns and McGinty all signed up to compliment Williams and Hill.
At this rate he could field a complete outfield 10 of shit full backs.
Crikey, I can almost see him salivating at the thought of it. The opposition would never get a touch of the ball and we would only have to put up one set of nets in each half.

Johns isn't a left back, he's trying to get rid of Williams and I think we'd all agree that Hill is better at centre half.

Played 6 games in the last 2 years.....and I've never heard of him!

Lets face it can he be any worse than what we have got now?
To play the way he wants to he needs attacking fullbacks. We have only Westlake that currently fits this billing (and he cant defend).

Presumably as opposed to the multiple sets of nets in each half?:D

OY! You know what I bloody mean!
One of them set of goals & netting up in the first half for George Long to defend then switch em round for the second half - They're not going to get used if there were two pair, are they? - Bloody smart arse shorehamview

We would all agree we need an attacking left back, in fact we are crying out for one.

All this makes me think though is that who was actually signing the players after Weirs arrival? I know that some were labelled as development prospects, but i for one am sceptical about what was/is going on behind the scenes at BL. Given the FFP rules anyone with any sense would not waste resources on a team of left backs.

Weir himself has stated that attacking full backs are vital for his chosen formation to work.
He's signed ELEVEN players but only one of those is a defender, who he clearly has no faith in.
He played Williams at left back for the entire pre-season and then axed him completely after 3 matches.
Now the transfer window's closed, he's left hunting for scraps to fill an obvious "problem" position.
Good management?

Slow learner ;).

Seriously, the assessment of the squad was not done properly this summer. Hard to say if Weir got poor advice from staff that remained.

The likes of Johns and McGinty almost certainly weren't players Weir had lined up ahead of him joining, but likely had been lined up before he arrived. I'd throw Brandy and McGinn in with those too, despite them being much more involved. Who knows if he's been more involved since then with the signings, but those since then appear to fit Weir's system a bit better.

Johns was signed before Weir had even been interviewed. I suspect one or two other deals were done before he arrived too.

Precisely my point.

I do feel however that something is amiss somewhere with Weir, The likes of Williams, Westlake, Mcginty, Mcginn, Porter are all players who started initally and then have since been cast aside. Seems rather a strange one to me. I know we've brought other plays in which may explain part of it, but these have gone from starters to not even involved in the squad.

Perhaps they have been cast aside because he's seen what they have to offer and he thinks they aren't good enough

They are perhaps players that Weir has liked less the more he's seen them - and they perhaps shine less when up against League 1 opposition than when against a collection of poor Scottish sides. The fact that Hill is now in the team when he seemed to start as third choice left-back suggests he isn't particularly happy with any of our options there.

Westlake, McGinn and Porter are arguably out of the side now because better players are available, who wouldn't have been at the start of the season.
