[CONFIRMED] New Signing - Jamie Ward

I think that the merits of this transfer have been covered. I am again disappointed that we have sent out mixed messages to the fans by stating that we would only be buying players who are better then we already have only to claim that the signing of Ward is one for the future (i.e. not better then what we have).

I personally do not beleive that Ward is considered one for the future; i think that he will be on the bench for the Donny game. I think the manager is simply trying to buy the kid some time in the wake of Beatties departure.

I'll give the kid every chance to impress, the fee is in the right ballpark for the gamble which we are taking and we have all been crying out for a bit of pace for a while now.

Some Blades have short memories. Harry was castigated and called an idiot and much worse by Blades fans when he signed Deane from Donny. I remember Donny fans ringing Radio Sheffield and laughing that we'd signed him at all, let alone paid money for him! And that was when players of that ilk WAS all we could afford. There was also a small fee paid (about the equivalent to £300k now) to Watford a few years before (when they were in the lower divisions) for an early twenties midfielder that might be an ok player, don't know whatever happened to him; Tony Currie, I think his name was!

Anyone want to wager that Ward's in the squad for the Donny game? The anti-Blackwell contingent don't want to believe anything he says, yet totally believe the 'one for the future' tag. Anyone 22 and under is generally 'one for the future' in public, but you can bet your house that every manager is buying with the hope that he's 'one for an instant impact'. Some do come off, like Doyle for example (who WAS bought for potential) some don't. You have to dig up alot of rocks to find a single diamond, but you have to be digging in the first place!

If you don't agree with the signing, fair enough! Just don't hold it against the player. He wanted to sign, he's keen to play for the Blades and as soon as he pulls on those stripes and runs across that line that makes him worthy of my support! He could be the next Duggie Brown or Don Peattie, but he might just be the next Ian Wright, Brian Deane or Steve Claridge. And wont all you moaners feel complete muppets if he is??

What he said!
Yes he might be a massive failure. Then again he could become another Deane. I work with a Chesterfield fan & he says he is a VERY good player. Lets see what hes like before passing judgement.

Oh and the fact he turned down the dingles already has him +1 in my book! :D:D

we are playing with promotion here, at this stage of the season we need a proven goal scorer, not a gamble from league 2!

The transfer window is still open, at the moment we do not seem to be struggling for goals and with Norwich and Donny on the horizon i do not see any immidiate need to add another striker.

Whilst I appreciate we were in need of a striker with his attributes (pace mainly) I question the crudentials of this player, I am from Chesterfield and have seen him play before and the signing to me seems pretty uninspiring.
My Opinion.
However I do concede that the signing on fee was nominal and age is on his side, Blackwell is claiming this to be a signing for the future.... but the trouble is we need a signing for the now!!!
I was always anti-Getting rid of Beattie from the get go and wont change my mind on that, but in recent weeks I have really been impressed with the way the players have pulled together and kept us in the running on the pitch. I think the murmurs of 'Henderson doing it every week' and 'challenging for automatic promotion' are slightly premature given the standard of opposition we've played (Norwich, Leyton Orient, Watford) so I will be reserving judgement until after the Donny & Preston games who other than us are the form sides in the league, before I start getting carried away about promotion.
A striker, midfielder and winger are required. Personally I would like to see us go for a lefty if possible and keep Halford in on the Right, he's in a rich vien of form atm and I think Naughton plays better with Halford and has more confidence to get forward knowing Halford will cover for him.

Totally agree with the above. Saying that, Ward may be the next big thing.
If we could sign a proven finisher as well, then the pressure is off ward a bit and we could all relax. But we need action now and not in the future. Here's hoping.
Darius Vassell being mentioned.

How much could tonight's goal be worth?

It's good to have strikers who score. A bit of confidence. A few goals. Better goal difference.

Not all the benefits are measurable :)

He could quickly make himself a hero with another one on Saturday though!

What also has made me extra happy is that every wednesday fan i know has slated ward and united, for being a crap player and a poor buy.

Hopefully saturday.... He'll prove them wrong :D

just seen the goal on sky sports news... nice finish.

He has to start against Wednesday.

With Hendo out and him scoring it's the only fair thing to do.

I can see this turning out to be a potentially good signing. Not making my mind up too soon but from what I saw last night he looks hungry and runs with the ball. How he ran wide and pulled in to score was brilliant! Anyother of our strike force would most likley have ran saw the player, stopped held the ball up and attempt to pass it and fail.
He looks perfectly in the balance of generous-greedy line which iswbat we need. In my view sharp is too generous and webber is too greedy. I could see a good link up with sharp here!

havent seen the goal yet, but the important thing for me is he had an oppertunity, and he took it

Couldnt get down last night so wouldnt like to comment too much.
Took his goal really well.. although sounded like he contributed in the build-up to the equaliser aswell.. Its hard for me to say whether he warrants a starting place on sat given he was only on for 5 minutes. Blackwell must make the right decision and not base it on a whim.
I would rather be proved wrong and have a good player in the making, than have a waster on the wage bill... so I hope he can continue in the same vien

All I can say is he showed that he's got what most of our team haven't, pace.

He was on the shoulder of the defender and burst away from him with ease, and put in a very confident finish too.

Let's hope it gives him another boost, and he can start to bag a few goals if he's going to play him.

Ah Daz, so you enjoyed you sleep then? Unlike these people who had to get up for work!

It was his first proper chance, and he took it well! He had alot of work to do to make it too!

good goal. Not a replacement for BT though, but may encourage us to play passing football more.

I do hope that was in jest... or you'll get a smacked bum for being naughty.

it was in jest, but i wont turn down a smacked bottom from you :thumbup:

Ahhhh I am a wanker...A very non-sleepy wanker:D

Enjoy work?:)
