[Confirmed] Blackman to Reading - Undisclosed fee

Blackman is a forward, being played out on the wing so he isn't considered one of our best players by the management.

Isn't he? How many other league "ever presents" have we got then?

We can justify his going any way we like (i.e. he's crap, he's one footed, he's got bad hair) but suggesting a player who has been picked every game is not considered, by the management, as one of our best players is bizarre (desperate would seem to fit) indeed.

Here we go again. All depends if / who we bring in for me.

If we bring no one in then hang McCabe out to dry, and I'm a clapper and McCabe fan.

But we could bring in Gallagher, Wellens, Duffy, Robson or whoever it may be and get automatic.

I'm in the minority but if we do bring players in then it's the 'freshen up' that we need, and only will selling allow us to do that.

Well you don't tend to get many offers for your shit ones :).

Blackman is a forward, being played out on the wing so he isn't considered one of our best players by the management. If you're being the manager and trust his decisions you can see the logic behind accepting that money for a square peg.

If he doesn't go, I'll guarantee that within 12 months many, including some of those moaning now, will say "Why didnt we get £1.2m for this specialist penalty-taker when we could?"

In my view, accepting an offer at that level for Blackman is one of football's less challenging conundrums. It's not a Currie or Deane, thats's for sure. IF* it's given to DW and spent wisely we'll be significantly better off.

*For those in doubt, that's a "big if"!

I'm not sure that you are, at all. I suspect a substantial majority would agree with your "...all depends" assessment.

What amazes me is that McCabe is supposed to be a businessman, all he has to do is buy a decent midfielder to pull Mac and Doyle together, give Blackman a good service and by the end of the season he will be worth treble what he is now.

A reported figure of £1,200,000? For a striker that's been playing in one of the better sides in League 1 (defined by league position) and only managed to score 5(?) goals from open play in over 30 games.

This, preceded by over a mill for Jordan Slew. Never again can anybody say that SUFC don't get value from transfers.

Again the shadow of evil McCabe appears again. Has there been any evidence that this is Evil Kev selling the player against the wishes of his manager?

We need the money to improve at least 2 or 3 positions. Let's not kid ourselves that there was any money to bring in the players we actually need. I am sure we have been here before in January so over to you Kevin... don't drop the ball

DW:- "We have had a bid for him, but he is still our player," Wilson said. "Whether that will change before Thursday, I don't know. I would like him to stay but obviously circumstances will prevail. He is a very good player."

Well there is this evidence. I will be interested to hear what Wilson says after the sale has been confirmed.
My guess is it will be something along the lines of him understanding the club's financial situation rather than a fist-pump and a suggestion that he had to be sold for the good of the team.

Hardly, he doesn't say he's been sold against his wishes or that the decision isn't his.
From that it could be that the player wants to play in the Premiership.

Although the players already stated he didn't want to leave because he wants first team football.
So we should be OK as I can't see him being a Reading or Sunderland regular. I'm sure he'll turn them down.

If he does go we can only hope that our season falls apart like it did when we sold Beattie to Stoke.
I am not sure if you are being sarcastic bit if not

1. Why would you(or any Blade) wish our season to fall apart ?
2.It didn't exactly 'fall apart' when we sold Beattie..indeed wasn't our record slightly better when Beattie left ? A Play off final appearance with a shit team selection which cost us promotion

It would restore my faith in humanity if faced with the choice of:

(a) earning around £5000 a week and playing regulary in the third tier
(b) earning around £20,000 a week and sitting on the bench in the top tier

Blackman went for a. I rather doubt it though....

Reading's scouts obviously don't have internet access otherwise they'd know he was a lazy, greedy, arrogant, one trick show pony who only ever scored from pens.

A lot of work to do in a short space of time now to replace the attributes that he brought to the team which now look sadly lacking.

Hopefully, come Friday, we'll have a better balanced squad with greater numbers and options. Otherwise, we may look back on his departure (assuming he is now going after all) with regret in May.

It's not his choice to make until his contract expires. We don't have to give him the option.
If we've accepted the offer it is because we want him to leave.
The only question is has Wilson made that decision in order to improve the team or not?

I think that is what amuses me most about all this. A couple of weeks ago there were loads of posts having a pop at him, now he's a world beater who we should never sell.
Very similar to comments aimed at Slew incidentally, apart from the penalties of course.

Interesting stuff from the Sky report.

Blackman is expected to sign a four-and-a-half year deal ( If he's offered that deal no way does he want to stay)

were reluctant to lose Blackman (not according to some on here, we can't wait to sell him)

I was kidding. We were on fire after Beattie left.

It's shocking aint it? Why does our fall from grace always have to be so dramatic?

Feels like it.

Mind you I guess Southampton, L**ds and Norwich fans have probably thought the same thing when they dropped to League 1. Remember L**ds didn't get promoted at their first attempt from this league but they did manage to keep their young players to mount a challenge eventually.

Although for us it feels worse as we are not a club that is renowned for its bounce back ability.

Was it 2-3 years L**ds spent in League 1? Scabs were in it for a few years an all. So i guess we shouldn't feel to hard done by. Don't wanna spend more than 3 years in the 3rd div though.

Your right about our bouncebackability. When we drop, we drop like a lead weight.

Forgot about Forest they were kicking around League 1 for a while. Its all about trying to avoid a Bradford really and dropping to League 2.

Let us not forget we thought we were too big to fall from the Championship so I am not kidding myself that we are too big to fall out of League 1 either.

If the manager has made the decision because he thinks he can improve the team, that's fine by me.
How many people seriously think the decision to sell Blackman was his though?

Cause its not. That's Readings idea. But, if we can get in a decent winger and a striker for the same cost then I bet DW would be more than happy. Blackman is a luxury in this league.

It's happend before, albeit before i was born, thank god! Some of my older mates still say the 4th division days were the best. Keith Edwards, Colin Morris, Darlington last day of the season. Tbh, i'm a bit jealous of that generation. Sounded like everyone had a great time. I'm sure not everyone entirely enjoyed it though. A few years before we ended up down in the basement of the football league we were nearly getting a place in Europe. That's just madness. I don't think we'll do a Bradford. I know it's not what i or anyone else wants, but i think we'll at least get a playoff spot this season.

You know that striker we signed back in August, Danny? Aye, 5 month back. Well, turns out he's a bit better than we thought. We're selling him on.
