One of the joys of being a Blade for me was that a lot of what is killing football didn't apply to my club. And now it does. In spades.

SUFC RIP.

I think it was a case of damned if you do, damned if you don't.

As we were the club was dying a slow death, McCabe either didn't have the resources or the will to invest the serious money we need to turn this club around, so the only way we could arrest the slide (barring Weir working a miracle on the scale of Wimbledon in the 80's, which I don't think we'll ever see again) was external investment.

Its sad that this is the way football is nowadays, I wish that money wasn't such a driving force, but its the sad reality, and we were very much in danger of being left in the wilderness or worse.

Come on, Rusty. It's time to rejoice. Imagine if the pigs were announcing this? United were dying on their feet without this. The days of wages caps, flat caps and Woodbines has long gone. This is the future. Enjoy!

If the pigs were announcing this it would give me one more reason to hate the buggers. They aren't. We are. And I'm genuinely gutted.

You speak as if there are no alternate futures, just this one. I can't accept that. It would be too grim for words.

Mixed feelings, tradition and part of the club 'sold out', maybe but this is how it works in this day and age and we have to move with the times. Only a matter of time before we have a ground name change or something similar but if we want to compete, baring stumbling on a set of kids who take the divisions by storm, this is the only way we can compete with everyone else who is doing the same.

For all those knocking McCabe, at least he's keeping equal control, he could easily have walked out, taken the money and left everything to fate.

James D Phipps, who helped broker the historic agreement with the South Yorkshire club’s plc chairman Kevin McCabe, cited geography, support and tradition as factors behind the prince’s decision.

“We know that investing in English football is not for the thin-skinned or faint-hearted,” Phipps told The Star. “We intend to honour Sheffield United’s heritage and are very excited, proud and honoured to become a part of it.

“Certain parameters were set when we were looking for an opportunity and it was imperative that they were met. We have been offered other clubs and have declined to take those forward.
“If you are going to buy into an English club then you want to buy a church. A club that people have a real feeling and affinity for which is certainly the case here.”

Phipps, from California, watched United beat Notts County on the opening weekend of the new League One campaign and could also join Prince Abdullah, a former president of seven time Asian champions Al Hilal, in the crowd when David Weir’s side visit Rotherham on Saturday.

“Al Hilal are the most followed team in Saudi Arabia,” Phipps continued. “The still holds an honorary role there and became well-known for taking an intellectual approach to sport.
“But despite being a dyed-in-the-wool sports fan, he doesn’t come here with any sense that he knows better. He wants to help and learn about everything that he can.

“We are very excited by David Weir, (head of football) John Stephenson and (chief executive) Julian Winter and the qualities they bring to the table.”

Prince Abdullah, Phipps explained, researched United’s cultural background as well as its balance sheet before opting to accept McCabe’s invitation to join Bramall Lane’s board of directors.

“It was also absolutely imperative for the prince that the club he invested in has played before in the top tier of English football.
“Likewise that it was a club with real family values. Because, in that respect, there are clubs and clubs.

“Also, he is very proud to be associated with Sheffield because of its footballing heritage. It is the home of football, where its laws were drawn-up and we are very proud of that.”
Despite having access to a portion of Prince Abdullah’s vast wealth - his business, the Saudi Paper Manufacturing Company, was reportedly worth a nine figure sum after its flotation on the country’s stock exchange - Phipps insisted the 47-year-old’s presence does not mean United will begin spending “ridiculous” amounts in the transfer market.

“Think Liverpool rather than Manchester City,” he said. “The prince, like Mr McCabe, has built a successful business from scratch and there are certain principles that he always adheres too.”

for what its worth I think this is an incredibly shrewd piece of business by mcabe, for the benefit of tje club as has been said earlier its a shame we've got foreign investment but its the only to compete in the current market. mccabe, love him or hate him hasn't sold out when it would have been easy to do so as i imagine he believes theres value in having genuine united fans involved in the decision making process.

its also interesting that the investment has come whilst we're in L1. maybe the prince has a desire to see a project through rather than simply buying success

I'm quite happy with this. He's certainly said the right things in his first quotes - family club, history and maintain the ethos of the club. I don't want our club to be changed dramatically but subsidised with investment.

Perhaps the only part where my opinion differs to the fresh prince is that he wants us in the Premier League. I don't, I find it obscene. The latest transfer window has reiterated this - £630m spent on transfers whilst the rest of the football league struggles. I'd rather we weren't part of that if I'm honest.

Lets hope we can get back to the championship through decent principles and not by buying our way out, investing in young exciting players, local if possible that want to play football for our club rather than want the clubs money.

It's his first day at the club so lets welcome him and listen to his ideas before judging and dismissing him.

Now we all know why Foxy has grown his bum fluff. It's to copy the new 50% owner. Look very similar....... If you screw your eyes up and have a warped sense of imagination. Your secret is out Foxy.

I enjoy watching us in the Championship far more than the Premiership but you can't expect the new man to say 'I want us to get promoted once and then plateau as to be honest I don't really like it in the Prem.'

All I will say to the small minority complaining......if you want to plod along in semi-non existence for eternity then lets stick with local owners, local players and bladey bladey bladeyness. If you want to be successful in the modern game you need to modernise and become an international organisation. I personally welcome HRH and look forward to hearing his ideas in taking us forward sensibly. UTB!

Going to put a whole new perspective on the shoes off demonstrations
And by the time the baying car park throng have managed to chant "Abdullah bin Mosaad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud OUT!!!"
he'll have been on the phone and signed somebody

There's precious little logic in what you say there, I'm afraid.

One, if I complain about Saudi investment, I "want to plod along in semi-non-existence for eternity"? Seriously, will you listen to yourself?

Also. how on earth do you work out that the only alternative to Saudi investment is "local owners, local players and bladey bladey bladeyness"? Sorry, it simply does not follow.

And how do you arrive at the conclusion that the only way to "modernise and become an international organisation" is via a Saudi prince? Again, does not compute.

If you're going to disagree with what a small minority are saying, please try and do it without attempting to write your version of what you presume they are thinking. You will probably be wrong.

Well, after four years of seeking funding with no sign of a sniff, what 'alternate future' was there? You talk as if Assad had bought us! Abramovich at Chelski? Russia is hardly a paragon of freedom but do you think their fans (another club that was dying on its arse) are bothered? Football is littered with owners whose backgrounds wouldn't stand up to scrutiny (I could say Mandaric, but libel laws prevent me).

But picking up your theme as the hired grief at a funeral, the talk on RS this morning was of 'getting back to the Premier.' Not sure I'd want that. Now there's a place where sharks swim in the murky waters - as we found out in 06/07.

I agree, ultimately we'll be trying to get there and he will no doubt help to fund it. To him and many, anything less than PL will be a failure.

But, that's a long way off!

Thing is Rusty, you've said that accepting such investment is tantamount to selling our souls, but you've not proposed an alternative plan or way in which we can move forward and compete.

Family clubs simply don't exist any more. Any I'm not being funny, but Mike Ashley has done more harm to Newcastle and incited more distrust, than Sheikh Mansour at Man City.

We were, and indeed still are, on our arses. If you think a guarantee of the club's identity is better than its long term security is better, then fair enough. But I'd rather be Sheffield Blades than Sheffield United RIP.

Police in North Sheffield say they have found a body hanging from a turnstile at Hillsborough - they have no clues as to his identity and are appealing for help. The body carries two tattoos, one reading "micalijo", the other "McCabe is a pig".

Anyone with information should keep it to themselves

Incidentally, does anyone else think that McCabe told him of our Arabic style dagger as our logo, the fans protest in a middle eastern way - removing their shoes and our rivals are insulted by being called pigs.

When do we see our first Saudi player signing? And when will the ground be turned to face Mecca?

This is getting tiresome now but what the hell...

Alternate future: No idea. Largely irrelevant point anyway. Again, you seem to back the idea that this is the only possible future. I disagree.

Assad: The only comment I have made on the co-owner is that he is Saudi. If you think that is talking as if Assad had bought us, all I can say is read it again. If you come to the same conclusion, there is little I can do.

Abramovich and Chelsea: Don't care. It's completely irrelevant what their fans might or might not think.

Hired grief at a funeral: That, fellow Blade, is insulting. Deeply. You can disagree with how I feel but to suggest that it is in some way both paid for and insincere...well, I don't know if it's possible to sink any lower than that.

Genuinely excited by this, Chelsea where dying a death before KGB took them over would Man City be title challenges with out all the millions thrown at them? Blackburn won the prem when they got millions chucked at them (bad management has got them where they are now) I'm not expecting millions but a few good loans and one or two players in January an I think we'll be up there, well done Mr McCabe for this piece of business the club was going nowhere fast with out investment an now it seems like we've got it. UTB

“Think Liverpool rather than Manchester City,”

That'll do for me.

And let's not forget that our very own Jimmy Hagan coached the Kuwaiti club, Al Arabi, from 1974-1976.

Mixed feelings too. Had hoped we wouldn't follow others and gone down the 'foreign' route, inevitably McCabe will sell his 50% and we'll be a subsidiary of Saudi business with Ali Baba and friends running & owning our beloved Blades. But, regrettably for English football, foreign owners, managers, coaches and players are here to stay and if you can't beat them, guess you have to join them!

UTB

Well old chum, you have a dilemma, don't you.
If you are a long standing supporter then you face a worrying and uncertain future. If you are considering not going to the Lane again then that will be a monstrously seismic decision you are considering.
You are obviously affected by this development and you sound as if you are at a crossroads.
Myself?....well I'm ambivalent about all this since I have always think that we should be in it to win it.
I have had decades of promise and disappointment and I will put my personal thoughts to one side for a few years for the greater good of the younger fans whom the club needs to stay a family club.
Of course, selfishly, I also want the club to progress and even with this money it will still be difficult with a classy Championship still to negotiate.
As for you, good luck for the future and I hope you can reconcile your thoughts with the excitement which will build up as time goes by.
