I have waited fifty years for the Blades to meet Shrewsbury Town in the league.I had hoped it would be in a higher division than one.
I fear for the ridicule I will receive if we dont win.To my knowledge we have only met once,in the league cup,and we managed to win that by the skin of our teeth.
Having been shocked at our play off loss, and with little knowledge of our new signings am I right to be concerned or will we sweep the shrews aside?

Always prepare for the worst with the blades. Anything extra is a bonus

In 1981/2 when we were in Div.4 Shrewsbury were in Div2.I am fairly sure that as we went up and they came down we avoided each other.

We have played Shrewsbury 8 times in the league and not won any of them 84-88 Div 2

Shrewsbury had a good side 84-88. They beat a lot of better sides than us. Looks like they are on the way back up again.

I've seen us play at Gay Meadow in the League Cup more than once. The first one about 10 years ago wasn't really skin of the teeth, I think we won about 6-0 on aggregate. That was particualry memorable for me, as it was the evening I took next door's cat in the car, by mistake. We left her asleep in the car on Asda's car park. The second time was more recent and we won on penalties, which would count as scraping through. We've met in the league a few times too.

Of course you're right to be worried, it goes with the territory!

Nah. They got tonked 4-0 by the dirties whilst we were getting dumped by a Plucky and resilient 10 man div 4 side from Brew Town.
What could go wrong?

Eh? 50 years? Played them in the league in 80's.

i just remember the first time we played them ,a lot of lads like Shred Jasper and sharpy jioned the 92 club as they were the last club we played ,i think they were 89 for me. as for the division and result ,the 80s were a bit of a blur for me im afraid.

Not sure we ever witnessed any taming of the Shrews at their old ground, Gay Meadows - all I seem to remember is 2-0 defeats (clearly Darren was out at one of his parties last night otherwise we would have had a list of all matches and scores between us and the Shrews in the 80s)

Since they are a newly promoted side there is no doubt they will treat this match like a cup tie.

Oh, shit!
We're screwed then!

I remember being thwarted twice in conseqeutive seasons by the fool Burridge. Once in a 3-3 when he let in two real "softies" and once when he spilled a pefectly good back pass from Brian Smith (possibly on his debut) and we went on to lose (2-1?).

Gay Meadow was my 91st ground in '84 and left only the Vetch Field where we hadn't played since the early 60's and didn't get to play until the late 80's.

Shrewsbury are one of the two sides currently in the league who are unbeaten in league matches against United - the other is Stevenage. Both teams have of course lost to us in other competitive games.

I can't speak for the away matches but United were terrible in the home games in 1985 and 1988 (Bassett's first home game, I think) and poor in 1987, when they were bailed out by an equaliser from a corner from Big Stan. Marginally better in 1986 - again, the first home game - but Morris missed a penalty.

I saw all 5 games with Shrewsbury at home in the 80's when I was a teenager (what a youth I had)..

25/10/83: D2-2 in the League Cup. Edwards put us one up with a goal where he blatantly handled it before scoring (still to be seen on youtube). The Shrews then went 2-1 up before Arnott equalised for us. However, it wasn't good enough as Shrewsbury had won the first leg 2-1 and we went out 4-3 on agg. Interestingly, Steve Ogrizovic was in goal for the Shrews having been recently released as Liverpool's resreve goalie and before resurrecting his career at Coventry.

27/4/85: L0-1, this was part of a run of 9 games at the end of the season where we failed to win one and we were only saved from relegation as our 3 main rivals (Notts Co, Cardiff and Wolves) managed to do worse. This game was notable for the return of our potent strike force of Edwards and Eves after some time out through injury. However, they did nowt in a game made memorable only by a late April snow storm.

31/8/85: D1-1. This was the game in which Peter Withe got his first goal, equalising an early Shrews goal. In the second half, Morris had the chance to win it with a pen but it was saved. It was the 2nd home game - the 4-0 win over Basset's Wimbldeon the week before being the first.

23/8/86: D1-1. First game of the season and much doom and gloom around with Edwards being sold to Leeds a couple of weeks before. Another boring game where Stan put us 1-0 up early in the 2nd half and Shrewsbury equalised with about 15 mins left.

13/2/88 L0-1. Bassett's first home game and a woeful performance. Bassett publicly said that it was not good enough after the game.

I remember going to Shrewsbury for that 87-88 game. We were truly awful. Probably was the worst ever display I have ever seen (and I have seen some crap over the years!).
