Early days with McNulty but Clough wont play him as he clearly wont play anything other than one up top and McNulty lacks hold up play or strength to play such a role.
For what it is worth he does not look like a difference maker and fits right in with the distinctly average players we seem to have signed sadly.
We have signed around 12 or 13 and are any better than the players that started last season when we went on the great run (albeit lost 3 players)?
I would rather we have signed 3 or 4 difference makers that what sadly looks a lot of average journeymen. It's early days yet and only 2 games in but it is odd that Clough seems to have dropped 3 or 4 of main men that were left (Doyle, Collins, Baxter) and opted not to even feature 2 players he signed or re-signed in Butler and Porter (why sign them?).
The reality is that the side was probably somewhere between the one that did so badly to start last season and then finished so well. Take out 3 of the best 5 players and the other 2 back to form they have showed most of SUFC career - sorry but for all the fans of Murphy and Flynn - they have still been more poor than good for most of their SUFC careers and you could suggest final 3 months of season was not the norm.
Scougall has been poor all pre season and not done much to open the season either.
In reality we have a much poorer side than the one that finished the season; have taken out some of spine (not sure why - even though I am not Collins/Doyle's biggest fans and for all those that lambasted Baxter end of last season - we still look more likely with him in the team I am afraid) and those left; seen as key players (Harris, Murphy, Flynn) have been really poor.
Hope Clough shakes things up in the week. We need to get back to basics again. Sad that it seems so much momentum and work over last 9 months may have been undone in a summer of odd transfer moves and a shocking start to the season People saying we need to splash the cash and I agree to an extent but those 12-13 wont be on cheap wages. Many are experienced and have played this level or higher so wont come cheap. Unsure board wil be happy with him signing 2 or 3 more. My argument is that we did well with a close knit (small albeit) squad supplanted to with youth etc and needed 3 or 4 quality players not lots of ordinary ones. Are some of these that have come in any better than Di Girolamo, Di Maio, Khan etc who were pushing last season?
The signings of Turner and McEvely were really disappointing for me. One week Clough says we will go with youth and holds up the average age and then goes and sign two players who were essentially unsigned for the whole summer and at wrong end of careers?
