What does a technical director do ?

At a forward thinking Club like Brighton Weir would have been involved in many of the following;

Create and implement a long-term strategic plan to evolve the club's sporting identity and philosophy.
Develop and oversee programmes for player development at all levels, from grassroots to professional, and provide guidance and mentorship for coaches. Oversee the development of the Academy.
Manage the recruitment, scouting network and player transfer dealings to ensure the club acquires talent aligned with its long-term strategy.
Manage key football departments, such as medical, sports science, scouting, and player loan department.
Work closely with the head coach, CEO, and owners to achieve the club's sporting objectives.

Its a role long overdue at SUFC.

Many thanks. Would that position obviate the need for a Director of Football ?

It depends on the structure at the particular club in question, some have both. A DoF might appoint a technical director to oversee the more practical day to day task while a DoF focuses on long term objectives.

He'd be a great shout for our much needed DoF equivalent role but I suspect the mere sight of BDTBL would probably trigger PTSD

Objectively you’d say if this is the route then he’s been associated with Brighton during a successful period.

But then he’s also the guy who thought Jasper Johns, McGinty and those other awful additions, wee a good idea. Then again, he’s currently got a better win ratio than Sellés!

A day of mixed emotions for David Weir. He loses his job at Brighton then finds later on he's no longer the worst manager Sheffield United have ever had.

Always felt sorry for Weir.

Pre-season he talked about playing football “the right way”. His principles were having defenders comfortable on the ball playing it out from the back having patience playing the possession game.

He designated Kevin McDonald pulling the strings in a quarter back roll, all our attacks went through McDonald. We won our first match and looked quite impressive playing quality footballer. Then McDonald was sold due to a stupid clause in his contract that allowed him to be sold very cheaply.

Without McDonald we have no creativity. We still tried to play a patient passing game but we kept losing over and over. You could see Weir starting to look ill. He seemed a nice, honest man and after every defeat he just kept repeating, he won’t give up on his football principles and feels confident he’ll turn it around.

It was no fun listening to his post match interviews as he seemed close to tears.

Agree Selles appears to be worse than Weir. It’s really bizarre as though Selles is deliberately trying to be sacked.
