I'm putting this on as a thread rather than just a comment because I assumed everyone felt the same but I've just seen his performance today labelled a "joke".
I'm a massive critic when it comes to Clarke but I thought he was immense when he came on. I've not seen a striker hold the ball up that well, flick balls on and bring others into play that we'll since Hulse? Shipperley?
If he had taken his chance (which in fairness even Done might have scored) it would have been the perfect substitution.
I was on the Bramall Lane upper corner so I had a bigger appreciation but at half time I was crying out for Brooks, Lavery even Scoogs to come on. I thought it was width and pace we needed.... but hey, I sell kitchens and CW is a legend in the making.

I called for Clarke to come on. Game was a bit scrappy and we needed someone to throw their weight around and allow the midfield to get up the pitch off the ball. Clarke allows that with his hold up and flicks.

yes he's made a few decent subs in his 23 league games. Clarke today, Clarke versus Chezzy, Chapman versus Oxford?, Even Scoogs in one game I think. He's not done too much wrong in his 1st half season

I think Wilder andknill had probably been talking about it towards the end of the first half and during half time said right we need to change it, Clarke, for me today made the difference between a draw and a win, I give Wilder/ Knill the credit, imagine what would have happened last season

I wouldn't have brought Clarke on and I am in the school of thought that thinks he can't play with Sharp.

Clarke was brilliant when he came on today. He won a lot (all?) in the air and held it up well. He looked interested today. He chased a lost cause and just kept it in play before winning a corner. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. He should have scored that chance at the end but the game was won by then so I can forgive that.

Inconsistent so far but changed the game today and helped us win it, end of.

Wilder seems to rate his contributions but others clearly know better.

Wilder obviously doesn't rate his contributions or he wouldn't be sitting on the bench so much.

'Inconsistent so far', and that's the best you'll get from him. 'Helped us win it', great, about fucking time he did his job. Big lazy lump, Darius Henderson the 2nd.

Played well against Chesterfield when he came on, looked good today.

Contribute well in a few more games coming on as a sub and he'll have done a job for us, not the answer to anything though unless Billy gets injured.

Disagree completely, he wouldn't even be on the bench if Wider didn't fancy him. He prefers Done with Sharp as the main partnership because it works from minute 1, Clarke is plan B or C depending on the game.
Every club and it's manager works like this, you know with a squad of players? That squad will change throughout the season.

Thought he was excellent today, and very happy he finally put in a quality performance. Showed us what he can do and hopefully will do in the future. Having an option like Clarke off the bench is a luxury very few clubs at this level can afford. He'd be starting for most teams in this league. Shame he couldn't get the goal but that shouldn't take anything off what was a brilliant performance.

he threw himself at the goalkeeper for sharps second goal to give him an empty net to aim at, that deserves credit, won most if not all of his arial battles, held the ball up well, got round his man a few times, looks like he has a few tricks with his feet as well, this is the sort of game where he would be needed the most

The Runarounders die hard. You're not shy of hypocrisy, are you Ted? Say what you like about Leon but don't criticise Done. Are those the rules? Not on my watch, they're not...

He's still in credit for injuring his toe whilst celebrating his goal kicking the advertising hoardings against Palace when they got relegated, lest we forget :D..In the meantime, he's a v useful option for us..I'm happy he's on board :)..UTB

Let's hope he repeats it next time out when hopefully the hapless Done will start his period of 'rest'.

You're an angry drunk aren't you Punchy? A real one trick pony who grows a foot when you've taken one too many. And when exactly did this become your watch? Are you running the message board now?

You're an embarrassment, a bitter old man living on past glories that only exist in your failing memory. Leave me off your agenda, you're tiresome and really not worth the effort.

I hope so too. But I was expecting it to be one of the back five, maybe Lafferty, that made way for Leon today. I know as a striker, Done needs to score more goals, but I thought he was decent first half. At this level, he makes it uncomfortable for defenders. And others benefit from that. When we get promoted Done may not get a shirt, but for now, he's doing a decent job..

Yes, that's a decent exposition of the myth, but sadly it's only true if his job description is to run around aimlessly and in vain and demonstrate precious little football ability.

If you were at the game, perhaps you saw Done's immense, pin-point cross to give Sharp a chance easier to score than miss in the first half?

I've said previously, you cannot judge Clarke on the few games he played at the start of the season, when he wasn't fully fit, and the team hadn't gelled. Since then he's been out injured until recently and in the time that he's been back fully fit we've only seen glimpses of him.

How some people (most people on here it seems?) can be so sure that him and Sharp can't play together - given these circumstances - is very judgemental to me. I think we saw yesterday that they most definitely can play together and it gives us another option. Clarke was winning the ball in the air and making knockdowns for Sharp - and at one point Sharp whipped over a cross which was right on Clarke's head until it got deflected away. Sure, Clarke should have scored! It was a sitter. Not as big a sitter as the half a dozen that Done has missed in the last few games he's played for us, but it was a sitter all the same.

Done didn't miss any sitters yesterday - I'll give him that. In fact, he got absolutely nowhere near having an attempt on goal. I'll say it again, Done isn't a striker. It's a good idea for us to play with 2 strikers up front, rather than just 1.

I'm not bothered whether that's Lavery or Clarke or someone else - I just want us to have 2 strikers up front - and not 1 striker and 1 converted midfielder.

That OK?

What's all this having an agenda thing? Some new internet craze? ;)

I was certainly at the game. The 'immense' cross was his contribution was it? I saw another immense cross which bypassed your hero when any decent striker would have scored with ease. That's probably when Tufty decided to get the hook out. Runaround is running rapidly towards the bench, I'm afraid. Will the Runarounders be doing circuits of the car park in protest when he is, inevitably because he's useless, shelved?

Colossus now is it ?

I'm crying in my cornflakes :)

There is, quite clearly, a school (old school ??) of thought that "appreciates" this type of player. I won't say footballer cos, imho, that's a step too far.

I go back as recently as the days of Clough when Higdon came off the bench in the semi final against Spurs, clumsily "fell" in to the Spurs CB thus allowing Che to get a shot off which he scored.

Higdon was, as I recall, regarded as a colossus for this impact contribution on that night as well !

Honestly guys. Ask yourselves this. It's football, not dodgem cars when you can bomb round in circles smashing in to all and sundry.

Acid test. Rhetorical question.
If the Oldham CF had challenged Moore in the EXACT same way that Clarke challenged the Oldham GK, and this then resulted in the ball falling to the oncoming Oldham player who buried it, what's the reaction of the 25k + crowd gonna be ??

What's the tone on this very forum gonna be like ?

As for any accusations of agenda.

1. I'm pleased as fuck that Clarke got away with it and "contributed" to our 2nd, decisive, goal.
2. If he comes off the bench and has a positive impact, I will clap and cheer such contributions.
3. As long as he is a Blade, he has my support.
4. While much of the positive stuff that has been said about his performance yesterday is utter nonsense, I will agree that he and Sharp looked, for the first time, to have some sort of understanding. At last ! If Sharp is the main man (but not undroppable) then Leon will need to adjust accordingly to fit around Billy. I doubt it will be the other way round !

If he is credited with the assist yesterday, than that's his first. To go with a solitary league goal.

So colossus. I would respectfully suggest, is stretching it a bit guys !
