For those Blades who read the forum before any official sites, game at Colchester postponed due to weather.

Which is quite ironic seeing as i'm sweating my arse off in Melbourne as it tips around 32 degrees! Still, can't complain ;)

MB.

It's -28 here in Oulu, Finland (one place in Finland reached - 38.9 last wed) and yet cars and buses are still working. Children still go to school and the country still works. The airports are still open

So it's quite amusing when I read stories on the BBC how the UK shuts down when it reaches -2. But being British it's great being able to go sledging everyday :-)

I think the difference is that if you know it's going to be below freezing for several weeks, then you can plan for it. Our climate is variable. The ice/snow stopped the trains in Holland I believe. Also Rome, which received its first snow for 36 years, had huge traffic jams.

-12 here in zug, contrary to popular belief, winters here at this altitude are just slightly harsher than the uk.

But everyone changes to winter tyres, buses and trains still run and Zurich airport clears the snow pretty quickly to get things moving.

The difference here is that everyone watches the winter forecast in excitement and head to the mountains.

I'm off snow shoe walking on mount rigi in the morning, getting up to 1600 metres, hopefully above the cloud it'll be bright sunshine and we can look to the alps.

As said its the variation in weather that causes disruption. Its a myth that nothing stops on the continent and it does here. If you know your going to have several weeks of it, it's easier to plan for. It all stopped in Prague with 4 cm last time i went, airport shut and had to spend an extra day there. didnt complain because Prague is picture postcard perfect in the snow. Nothing has stopped here much only some football games. What I've said has nothing to do with the Blades but hey.

A lot of it is to do with other countries having the proper equipment (tyres etc) to deal with it. It wouldn't be worth the UK having all this stuff for the amount of time it would be used, which is probably a few days each year.

Actually that's just the attitude that keeps Britain questioning where it all goes wrong.

As I said, zug, Zurich etc keep moving because they approach things sensibly. Heathrow has cottoned on to the need to keep things moving and putting winter tyres on doesn't just help for the 2-3 days a year they are more effective from 7oc and below, so from nov to feb really.

I noticed this year when I got winter tyres on our lasses car that there is a much bigger range and more people getting them put on.

The global warming alarmists have a lot to answer for...

Exactly. Of course people love to bash councils and anyone else for the disruption. I know of someone in a variable weather part of the US and they had an inch of snow last year and everything stopped for days. Of course this doesn't happen in the northerly parts of the US where they know it will snow heavily every winter.

having recently moved to derbyshire i'd have to comment on how different things are there.. you see gritters and snowploughs all over the place.. the road through bradwell to the A612 was continually open and i had no problem on sunday getting to toads mouth BUT THEN chaos ensued..now that we were into the 'welcome to sheffield' boundary (and all of the shit road surfaces).. it's a sheffield thing.. they're too tightwad to put the money in so they can spend it on idiotic hippy projects

Schools and that sort of thing presumably?
