We've been doing that anyway. Even without Billy we've had Ramsdale or Long on the bench every week. We're probably the last club to be affected. Plenty of young players who could be on the bench.

reed long ramsdale calvert lewin ... the list goes on for us. with our academy it wont be hard for us to get 1 sub even if we were top of the prem

Agreed. I was thinking more of the opposition who may not be so fortunate as we are with our development players

Might affect chances of us getting Harry Chapman back here?

(Even so, hope we're planning to make a bid to try & bring him here permanently. Can see Boro going full on with a costly, parachute payment-funded, foreign player-packed side to try & get back up immediately.)

Chapman is exactly the kind of player boro should be hanging on to.

This is a good point.
However I don't see the new rule as making any difference in reality. It's just not hard enough, and way to soft. If they don't have a player in the squad then they can only name six subs instead of seven. That'll teach em!!!
Name one in the starting 11 and have to have a home grown player on the pitch at all times.....now that would be worth having.
Furthermore, state that the player must have come through their academy from at least u/16's and be within a 50 mile catchment area of the club.

All clubs might then start to place a proper priority in their academy, and if that came in then we might be ne of the few to manage quite well.

You'd think so, but looking at how Newcastle & Villa have gone for it this season in this new supermax parachute payment era, you'd think there'd be little room for development type players.

In saying that though, Villa have persisted with Grealish, & they have brought a young forward through too, so maybe Boro will build on the experience he's gained over the past couple of seasons after all.

Still hope we make a sneaky bid mind, testing the waters.

It's all pretty lightweight. And what about clubs that don't have academies? Presumably just the localness criteria would apply to them?

Boro aren't really in the same league as Newcastle and Villa though. Very little history and smaller ground. I think it's difficult for them to attract quality players. They'd be better following the Burnley model and investing in young players that are already doing well in the Championship

All clubs receive funding from the FA for academies. All league clubs should be made to have academies, and it's only because of the new young player rules and academy grading that some clubs were forced to ditch their academy. A level three academy can lose a very good player who they have found at say 15 for peanuts.
Mansfield don't have an academy.....they have a youth team but pick up lads released by academies generally to make their squad.
I guess there are a few others that do that too.

But if there was a real need, and an incentive, then more funds would be directed towards academy coaching and less to just cherry picking at the top clubs. It really rankles me that a kid will drive past numerous clubs to get to the big boys, and often overlook their home club.

We don't know yet how Brexit will work out. I assume that unless a special deal is arrived at, EU footballers will need a work permit, and that would include Ireland. Not saying I expect that outcome, but presumably that is where negotiations would have to start. In recent years we would have not been much affected by such a change.

Well,well, my goodness me.

We will be enforced to put a club-developed young lad on the bench. Hallebloodyleuieahh!!

Want me to show you the past posts??!!:)

This will simply be met with the academy goalkeeper de jour for most clubs. All it really does for those clubs that don't have academy graduates pushing the first team is simply sacrifice one of 7 substitutes and have someone that will almost certainly never be brought on. It's utterly meaningless, and will be treated as such.

No problem to us at all we have loads to pick from who by then will step up to the plate, Semple,Hallam,Slater,Graham also Greaves will come into the equation by this time next year and these are without Brooke's/Reed and Whiteman as I'm not sure they would count

Nothing of interest here. Most clubs in the EFL have a young player or two in their matchday squad anyway and as long as sanctions are continued to be imposed on all apart from PL clubs it will not have a positive effect on the game. It will only increase the quality gap.

This is interesting what happens to the likes of Brentford who have had away with their academy.unless I got the wrong end of the stick I'm sure they no longer have one do they?0

It's missing the point.

In order to support this, what are the league going to do to stop the PL clubs stockpiling young players because they can? Naff all.

The league are looking in all the wrong places.

Another stupid idea from the powers at the EFL, apart from being pointless as there would be no requirement for said young player to actually play at any point, this would only further punish those who can't afford to run a big academy.

i believe you are correct, they got rid and now invest in lots of obscure young players that might come good and be worth selling - it works out to be quite profitable, and I think the logic behind it is that academy players can get pinched by the top clubs for tiny amounts in compensation so it makes the academy a bit worthless. (Mini-view-from-Brentford, as my family support them)

Brentford are run by a bunch of Poker Players from abroad....... I wouldn't want to hold them high up as a sensible way to run a football club. That could crumble very very quickly.

SUFC are doing just fine. They have enough players in and around the first team as it stands to cope with this new rule.

Nothing to worry about here folks.

Doesn't go far enough. Make it the 2020/21 season and make it three players if you want to make a difference.
