Seriously ....way we are being linked with Arthur Lowe Clive Dunn etc we will end up with a team of decent players ..but no pace whatsoever ...the game is constantly evolving and unfortunately pace is getting to be a major factor ...

? Surely there must be some premiership youth players we could loan ...or ideally where is our European and Worldwide scouting network ..really ..where is it ..?

There has got to be some youth pace and variety knocking about European football ..we can add to our squad ..even as impact subs ...but be nice to know how our European and worldwide scouting network is operating these days ?

Pace . Comes in many forms
In football speed of thought . Reaction as shown by Leon Clarke in a crowded box is worth 5 yards 2 strides of someone just fast when running. I can't recall any occasions from last season where we were undone by a Billy Whizz footballer.

Most football is short bursts over 5 to 10 metres. You rarely need 9.35 second 100 metre dash speed.

Always loved Dads Army to be fair! If we sign Nugent then I trust that Wilder knows what he's doing. Because people are past 30 doesn't mean that they'e past it. You actually become a better footballer when you're older decision wise so as long as he's still fit then Nugent could be a decent signing. Stuart McCall was considered past it when he came to us at 38 and that turned out ok didn't it. He might not have scored many for Derby but Wilder gets the best out of people and I reckon he could score 15 goals for us next season - played regularly.

Worldwide scouting network? Probably costs several million a year.

Sorry can't afford £5m for Waghorn, got to pay our contacts in Manilla, Bogota, Lagos and Vienna.

Imagine the meltdown on here? But it would be going on wages so Ricky would be happy.

Some truth in that. But real, blistering pace is still a useful weapon to have in your locker. Ojo absolutely ripped us apart at the lane last season..Stevens and JOC couldn't get near him. Similarly, when we got to the PL under Warnoxk, Ifill, Kabbalah and Webber provided us with plenty of pace going forward. It's a great weapon to have in your arsenal.

Pace is a great exciting thing to have but the intelligence to get from box to box quickly with 5 or 6 one touch passes and have a shot before the opposition get back properly is just as important. Something we didn't do in the second half of last season apart from Bristol City away which was a joy to see, getting forward fast with purpose and a threat.
In the world cup those that fannied about went home early, those that could get to the oppositions box quickly with half a dozen passes and have a effort on goal did well. Its not rocket science.

" fannied about in world cup " what relevance is that got to do with wanting a young lad or two with pace as an alternative from the bench and occasional breakaway.....er non ,

Pace isn't everything, it helps if you take the ball with you.

Story from Northampton Echo but I first heard Des's quote during a radio interview.

It will be a trip down memory lane in more ways than one as Des O’Connor returns to Northampton later this month.

He appears alongside Jimmy Tarbuck in Des O’Connor & Jimmy Tarbuck Live at the Royal and Derngate on Sunday, September 17.

Des was evacuated to the town during the Second World War, though he jokes people think it was the Crimean War and also played briefly for Northampton Town Football Club.

“I was told by the coaches that I was a really good fast player, and if only I could have taken the ball with me then I would have been better,”
