Five players on the edge of our box, three very close to the ball...

Still gets the cross in where their player gets to the header despite being outnumbered 2-to-1.

Our defending has been very slack at times, but a top half finish and a so-very-nearly-and-technically-still-on run towards the playoffs is the result of an at times wacky system that includes centre halves running into their box, constantly overlapping wingbacks and an all-action, hell-for-leather, go-for-the-win and fuck-the-draw mentality.

Other teams shut the opposition out so much better, but I know who I’d rather be watching.

Yep. We're the footballing equivalent of Amir Khan. We can look a million dollars going forward but sadly have a glass jaw, meaning we can get knocked out from nowhere. No matter how well we're playing, we only ever one long ball or 30 yard shot from being knocked out....

I'd disagree on the Amir Khan point as he's more like Wednesday. Spouts his mouth off about how good he is and how he's done this and that, yet when it comes down to it he gets knocked the fuck out, only to disappear for a year.

Its no coincidence that Wednesday won convincingly on Saturday and have crawled back out of the woodwork... on the same day that Amir Khan won in 40 seconds and then started calling Kel out!

At the risk of hijacking the thread, I'm of the view Kell should be careful what he wishes for, because on his day Khan is simply too fast and mobile for him.

However, to extend your analogy, just like the Mittwoch Snort Beasts, Khan is a bottle job so on the day he may fold under the intense pressure the fight would bring.

For whatever reason in recent weeks we seem to be absolutely terrible at defending set pieces

He's also way too fast for Breidas Prescott, but got brutalised.

Fact is, Khan doesn't like punchers, which in boxing isn't a great fear to have.

Sheff de party its alright having the players in the picture around the opposition player, but unless they stop the ball into the box we'll always put ourselves at risk

Ah yep that’s exactly what I’m saying. We have 4 around the crosser and 2 around the guy who heads it and they still nearly score.

I’m just meaning it’s an example of how bad our defending has been. It is little wonder we’ve conceded so often, but at least we’re exciting to watch!

Think I could go a round or two with Le Greco tbh

Go on then sheff who would you rather be watching

Having a good defence is equally important to having a good attack. Fuck this bollocks about it being exciting to watch. Is anyone telling me a team with Messi and Ronaldo up front with Noseworthy and Collins at the back would be box office stuff? Same applies to boxing too whilst we're making the analogies.

A lot of our protection in League One came from us holding the ball so well. Added to that that we'd always be confident of outscoring opponents in an open game. Since we've had to adapt to the Championship, understandably, those edges have got a lot smaller. I hate to jump on the bandwagon of crying over Coutts, but he was a big part of the ball retention in our system.

Realistically, though, it all comes down to improving personnel. I think, for all it was a bit overly emotional, Wilder was spot on when he said he was getting the maximum out of most of our players. I think Lundstram and Evans will improve with time. I think we have some quality individuals in Fleck and JOC. What's happened, however, is that we've suffered from tired legs and some players that just aren't quite up to taking us a step forward.

Be happy that we have a good manager who wants to play good football. The rest is down to money.

Next season we'll be good defensively but shit going forward. I can see it already.

Our problem is that we defend with passion but not with intelligence. We defend towards the ball rather than just holding the space between the ball and the goal. We don’t think about the individual in front of us. The example shown with Jota is exactly the same as with Snodgrass - allowing a gifted leftie to come in on his left rather than just blocking that space and forcing him to his weaker side. Intelligence is important in a defender - Enda in particular plays with a distinct lack of it!

Do agree with you. I love watching good defences but you need natural left and right footed players who can play intelligently but the really good modern defenders are able to read the game as well. add to that control and passing and you have winners. I did not mention tackling as I'm told its not so important but when it is needed it has to be spot on.

I sometimes think that our players in the full back positions have all been to the Gary Naysmith school of defending - stand five yards off the winger and watch him put the crosses in.

...then hold a random bit of your leg and miss the next five matches.

Did I say wanker?
