We need Seriki back ASAP for home games. Fuck all threat from full back with Clarke or Gilchrist.
I know you always want to give new players a chance but objectively Clarke is one of the worst full backs defensively I’ve seen.
The percentage of games he’s got a roasting in vs not isn’t even 50-50 at this point.
Murphy from a team who are going to finish lower mid table must have wanted to put him in his pocket and take him everywhere he goes.
Leeds had for less joy when Choudhury came on, though he is very much Mr Sideways and Backwards when it comes to passing.
More you think about the subs, the more you think there was some subconscious bias in play. I.e. first sub, get Hamer on, he’s our best player, second sub, get Cannon on, we paid a lot for him. It felt like those decisions were a bit preordained.
When you realise that Choudhury meant there was less down their left it stands to reason they’d go more to the right. The most obvious sub in the match situation to replace tiring wingers was McCallum. He’s also quite quick and he’s good in the air. He would have been ideal to send on and pair up with Burrows against James and Bogle.
Obvious criticism is why did you not bring on Hamer? Despite hlm being poor when he came on, he’s still out best player. But the game situation didn’t lend itself to his abilities. If we were losing or drawing, fine, but making it hard for them out wide where they are strong was a bit of an obvious thing to address.
Likewise, with Cannon, if the aim was to play up top alone and hold up the ball then Moore is that man. He’s also a superb asset on set-pieces.
Different players and the game would have panned out differently but if Burrows and McCallum had been on the left, more chance someone would have stopped James crossing. For the second, you’d expect Moore to beat the centre back to that first header. If at 88 minutes most fans would have accepted a point as Wilder put it, then why is Holding sat getting splinters?
Reminds me a bit of losing at home to Bristol City when down to ten. Wilder went for it and we lost. It was so clearly the wrong decision.
Maybe managers believe their own hype at times but I can think of many instances where you don’t play the percentages and it goes against you; that Bristol C game, Ravel Morrison, Jack Rodwell, not spoiling the final minutes against Leeds…
It’s done now, but just some further reflections.
