Adams is the only player in the current squad with the demonstrated potential to play for a top Premier League club. He has strength, pace and an effortless touch - the basic ingredients to create something out of nothing, which is what the top clubs are prepared to gamble on.

You make a fair point about promising young players not always making the grade and there has been a very occasional example - e.g. Jordan Slew - when cashing in has proved wise. As a general rule I'd argue we've done better when we've held onto our younger assets - Whitehouse, Deane, Treacy, Jags et al - beyond the first serious offer.

Ricky is spot on,hope he does make it but to get carried away by what he has shown so far is very nieve.
 
Looks to be fatter than Baxter to me and fook knows where this pace is that everyone says he has. He can't hold the ball up, he can't beat a man and his heading skills are worse than Sammons. Sure he has scored a few very good goals but that is all he has done his all round game has not improved since the day he arrived at the lane if anything he has gone backwards this season. He also has a nasty habit of diving in the box maybe he learnt that with the young England squad, how someone of his size gets knocked about so easily is puzzling too. If anyone offered £1.6m I'd take their arm off with it.

Speed of thought and a lack of awareness contribute a lot to his difficulty when doubled up on, as they do with his back to goal and in defensive situations - his responsiveness without the ball is third rate.

Agree that the manager has to take a lot of responsibility for his development. To be fair to Adkins he has disciplined him a couple of times, but whether that's enough I don't know.

I think the lad certainly has potential, but whether he realises that potential is anyone's guess. At the moment he appears to have hit a brick wall and as things stand there's little evidence that he's moving in the right direction.

Rightly or wrongly, I can't help feeling that he's took his foot off the pedal once he'd signed his contract, perhaps thinking he's done enough, but I might doing him a disservice in saying that

Our coaching staff and the manager need to do a job on him
 
I thought he should have been rested after the Southend game on the basis that his ball control seemed to have deserted him and I also thought he shouldn't be allowed to think that he was indispensable to the team.

The suspension gave him the rest, but in my opinion a few games on the subs bench would have done him good (and still would) and maybe make him realise a bit more dedication is required.

His current form does not warrant a starting place
 
Lane Ender I have to agree a lately which is a real shame because I do like adams and think he has a lot of potential. Hopefully he will return to some form and kick on and grow as a player.

He has shown us little glimpses of what he is capable of but has struggled to replicate this week in week out. It is some times like playing with ten men with him on the pitch as the work rate and effort is just not there some matches. His first touch can be brilliant some times and the ball just seems to stick to his feet I hope he can grow and show us what a player he can potentially be.

As to the original post I think adams seems to have put a bit of weight on and not to sure if this is a good thing or bad. Even though he has put a bit of mass on he still falls to the floor like he has been shot on to many occasions and feel he has lost some of his pace. Personally watching him Saturday he just didn't look match fit he looked like he had lost pace and didn't seem to be able to beat men and take on his marker like he usually can. Like I said hopefully this is just a phase he is going through and he will improve on recent performances. Really think that sharp could be the man to teach him and coach him on his all round game. Sharp has been around and done it all before hopefully he will be able to take adams under his wing and help him reach his full potential.
 
Che's still very young, still growing & bulking up. And he's still getting used to football at a much higher level than the one he previously thrived in.

I've told this story many times but I'll tell it again, because it's of some relevance here. In an earlier life, when I lived down in London, I used to watch a lot of non-league football. One season, Hayes FC's first in the Conference, I was lucky enough to see most of Jason Roberts's first season in football - he almost single-handedly rescued Hayes's season (as an 18-year old), he was a very rare talent. But, at that very early stage in his career & unlike the bulky centre forward he became after he fully grew, he was a wiry winger, a bit like Chris Waddle for want of a better example. Also worth bearing in mind is that his career stalled a bit after his big move to Wolves before he went on to blossom at Bristol Rovers & then with West Brom at a higher level. Adjusting from non-league can be a bit of a rocky road. Peterboro's excellent Otzumer is another example of a player in & out of the side after stepping up a number of levels.

A bit of patience required, I'd say.
 
For what it's worth which is not a lot but yes he has 'bulked up' just as I have bulked up over Christmas. He could do with bulking down a bit. Adkins alluded to issues or something in his interview and he has been disciplined for 'issues' before. Yes he is young and hopefully he will sort himself out as his obvious talent can only get him or any player so far. Hard work and dedication to his profession is what is needed to complete the picture.

It will certainly affect his running over a distance.
 
He's going to have patchy performances but he's owned us about 9 points single-handedly. He's the best young prospect we have. Needs to knuckle down a bit.
 
Che only played 20 minutes on Saturday, and we weren't really playing well. Peterborough didn't give up much space behind their defence (is it correct that there were no offsides in the game?), and when we tried to give him the ball he had his back to goal and a defender challenging him. We need him to come good if we're going to challenge for promotion. This was an exception, but Coutts touch let him down before he could give Che a ball to run onto and cross:

Yet at the same time, as soon as he came on Saturday, he got a two handed push in the back as the ball was played into the box toward him and he stayed on his feet and didn’t get the decision. I’ve said it before poor refereeing in the form of not giving fouls unless the player collapses in a heap only encourages a culture of cheating. It’s difficult now for players to know when they should go down or stay on their feet. I think he has dived ridiculously once or twice. I also think he’s been unfairly punished for diving on other occasions where he has been fouled and as on Saturday, stayed on his feet and didn’t get the decision. Sometimes, it probably feels like you can’t win.


I do agree about some of his weaknesses though. Mainly positioning and work rate related. These are two aspects of his game that need to improve dramatically but they are areas that can so easily be improved if he willing to listen and work hard. There’s also the art of using your body to properly shield the ball. He hasn’t mastered that yet but it comes with experience. Sharp is very good at it as is Coutts. The kid has massive potential. It’s up to him whether he realises it. I’d be sorry to see him go because I believe he CAN be an extremely good player. Whether he will or not remains to be seen. I also think the extra weight is probably hindering him. He could do with giving a bit of his bulk to DCL. I’m still hopeful that those two can develop into a devastating strike pairing for us in the future. In fact, I hope we start next season with Sharp, Done, Adams, DCL and a new very good COG style target man as our strikers.
 
Think what adkins was alluding to was not just the sending of but I understand he lost his dad during this time. He made some comment regarding this on his instagtam. He was probably glad to get back to some kind of normality.

Anyhow, I reckon he's a shoe-in to start against Manure. Stick him in the shop window and hope he can bang an eye-catching goal in!

Seemed to be getting a bit frustrated at himself before the sending off, hope the lad can get his head together and get back to being the exciting prospect we all raved about early on.

Poor lad. Very difficult losing your Dad. I misunderstood and assumed it was a sort of discipline issue Adkins was on about. Of course the manager wouldn't come out and say it. I got that one completely wrong! A difficult time for Adams.
