Chris Porter Vs Steve Davies

I've never been much of a Porter fan but after another goal today i'm starting to wonder why we let him go.

An interesting one here. According to wikipedia, Porters record at lowly Colchester is PL 19 Goals 7
Steve Davies record at Blades is PL 12 Goals 2.

Should we have kept Porter? Why couldn't we get the same goal return from him?

Talk sense, man! Yes, Porter was our top scorer last season but that counts for nothing. We need a scapegoat!

Because we defend all game to save a point, teams like Colchester just go for it. It is hard for Davis to score from our own penalty area defending a nil all result. Simple!!!
We should have thumped Orient today but defended the draw from the start as usual. I do hope he takes the leash of the players in the play offs or were staying put........

I am at pains to explain why EVERY other side above us in the league employ GOALSCORERS and we consistently go for big lumps, under the general description of target men.

Porter / Higdon / Davies.

In all honesty, who gives a fuck who is better (with apologies to the OP).

Absolute myth that a big un up top is what is required at L1 level.

Plain and simple fact is we have not scored enough goals this season.

Scoring goals takes pressure off the defenders, leading to fewer goals being leaked at the other end.

Regardless of the personnel employed 'up top', if the tactics are ponderous, the dead-ball plays pitiful and the desire to get box-to-box rapidly non-existent, Rooney would struggle in our set-up.

It isn't the individual failings of our 'strikers', it's what's going off (or not) before the ball gets to them. Chesterfield (Doyle), MKD (Afobe) and even Rochdale (Done) have lost their key strikers but have still finished the season well.

I take your point Graf. It s up to the rest of the team to create and for the "system" used to be conducive to creating.

But none of the three players you mention are target men. They are goal scorers.

We are 5th in the league and, the simple fact is our top scorer is barely in double figures (not including Done's goals for Rochdale).

I wonder how many he would have scored if Rochdale had done the same, it makes me laugh he was on Blades player buzzing pre match Bradford saying he was well up for it. Next interview is cloughie saying Done needs an injection and will be out for the rest of the season, must have had the same Injury as Collins.

Every striker looks shit if you put in the quality of delivery we out in game on game. That's why they score more when they move on.
For all our possession and approach play the quality of the ball into the danger area is pretty shocking

Yes it is rather worrying isn it. Done looked great in his early games for us, far better than Davies....

Davies has, on the whole, led the line well, also adds something when attacking or defending set plays. Not as critical as some about Porter but I always thought his better performances were as a sub. Perhaps we should have kept Porter as an option from the bench but game-to-game Davies is the much better option.

I think that's certainly part of it, tho Porter crashed in a screamer against Bradford the like of which I don't remember him ever attempting at Blades.

I hate to be picky and possibly pedantic, but the Wards tours were on Friday afternoons just after lunch. Meet at The Norfolk Arms opposite and be escorted over. The Stones tours were however in the evening, meet at the gate and be taken in. Both tours provided generous sampling time afterwards, Wards in a small stone building with ale from the barrel, Stones more like a mini recreated pub. I don't know about Whitbread tours as I wouldn't drink Trophy Bitter even if it were free,

As an aside, wHen the letter arrived saying I could go around the Wards brewery I felt like Id won a Willy Wonka golden ticket!!

To lose both breweries and the John St stand in short succession felt like Id lost an arm and key reference points to my teenage years....

I am not saying it has worked for Colchester, but that's why Porters stats are better.
Matty Done was on fire at Rochdale, then for us when he first came and then he was put on the wing and then dropped with a similar injury I suppose to the one Collins was out with until he was binned.
I rate Davies and I certainly rate Matty Done but in a negative style they are going to struggle.
Let them play and do their jobs is what I say, they have proved they can do it if used properly.
Cloughie should unleash the Beast mode in all of the players and we will piss the play offs, there is no team in this league unbeatable, far from it.........Onward and Upwards

The thing I remember about the Wards tour was that it was hosted by a nice old guy called Gary, so old he must have been the first kid to be called Gary.

Because he is not good enough to play for us. He has a terrible touch, no vision and lumbers around the pitch at a snail's pace. When played with Ched, it was like a Dad and his 6 year old and the Dad kept trying to set him up.

He isn't good enough for the top of League One, don't let it bother you!
