I am annoyed that Spurs have taken back the player I have most enjoyed watching this season, a bit bored by our style of football, bemused that Blackwell rarely makes a decisive substitution, disappointed that Ched has not yet shown his class and think it's a shame we are out of the cup. Yet I am slightly cheered by our league placing, will be delighted if we get in the play offs and will be delirious if we win auto promotion/the play off final.

If the chicken-lickin' rantmongers are throwing in the towel for this season and diving into the abyss when we are 6th and have lost at home twice, what happens if something really serious occurs? Will their heads explode?

No worries, I just think the demographic of people who ring up these phone-ins is fairly narrow - Brian et al. Obviously I'm making broad-brush statements, but generally I struggle to relate to whingers anyway in all walks of life, particularly those a bit younger.

I am finding that it is elder end of the spectrum that is most disappointed with our current set up. As I don't know how old anyone is on here then I am basing this on conversations with people I know.

The younger end (post Bassett) seem happy with workmanlike players who put in 100% but show little skill or general aptitude for the game.
The elder supporters seem far less tolerant of such players having seen players like Woodward, Currie and Badger it is hard to watch players who are quite simply athletes and not footballers.

The younger end have perhaps only seen a handful of seasons in the top flight and see our general status as a club being of Championship standard.
The older end probably started watching when we were a top tier team and view any position lower than this as some sort of heresy.

The younger end can remember maybe a season or two of really good football (Kendall half a season, Spackman half a season, Warnock a season).
The older lads have seen this and seasons of John Harris inspired quality.

The younger supporter sees the future as long and bright and thinks we can make an impact.
The older viewer has seen the false dawns and broken promises and knows that if we don't acheive something soon it'll be too late to enjoy it even if it does happen.

I remember the tail end of the Bassett era (my first full season watching wa the season we were relegated from the Prem) So I agree with a lot of that. I certainly don't see us as anything approaching a top-flight or big club. I disagree with your final comparison though, I don't see a long and bright future! That said, I don't tend to mope of whinge too much about it, I just accept that the football club I love isn't actually very good.
