As my son plays for Chesterfield Academy, I had the pleasure of going to the Pro Act last night to watch Chezzie U18's play Aston Villa in the Youth Cup 3rd round. Reminded me a lot of our Cup run a few years ago, not least because Chesterfield's centre-half (and skipper) is non other than Maguire the younger (Lawrence).

Very similar in style to his brother except he is a leftie and not quite so powerfully built, but did well against a very strong Villa outfit.

Also playing was Jake Beesley - son of Paul, who did very well upfront and having already been in the 1st 18 looks to have a bright future.

Harry was in attendance too and I managed to have a quick word but sadly no chance of a return to BDTBL (I did try).

For the record Chessie went 2-0 down and looked dead and burried before a spirited fight-back saw them run out 3-2 winners.

Thanks for the info Cutters. Like those sorts of snippets.

Still sad to hear that the closest to football Harry gets is watching his brother play for Chessie 18s. Did you ask if he has any regrets? I bet he has a sack full.

Not sure about regrets KW, he did say that he was enjoying it but needed games. I suspect he is pretty close to the first team tbh but I guess time will tell. Top bloke is our Harry.

He might manage a place on the bench now as Dawson is out for 6 weeks.

It was still a terrible decision football wise from everyone concerned, but in the end it was no shock that money came and won the battle in every aspect.

Yep I bet he is roaring his eyes out wondering what he is going to do with his 20 grand a week.

Come on, he will lose half of that in tax, so the poor lad only has £10K a week to spunk away :-)

He probably will be when he reflects on the wasted year getting splinters in his ass and the retrograde step in his development as his career slides backwards. It's a transient thing, being a footballer, and nobody's crass, naive, comments about a Jerry Maguire, "show me the money" pot of mirth will actually replace the years you can lose through I'll judged decisions. Money is not everything in life - if you have a bit of money from a move such as this at 19-20 but fuck up your career, no amount of wonga will ever get it back - and the pot he can piss in now will no way sustain him for a lifetime. His memories of being a professional footballer might but if he stagnates now and slides backwards he may not be able to regain that momentum.

Good to know Jake is doing well. I got to know the Beesley family because Jake's brother Gabriel was in the same team as my son at Staveley WMC u15s in 2012-13 season. Lovely family. Three of them support Liverpool (Paul's wife, Jake and Paul's daughter) and two support Everton (Paul and Gabriel)

He will need to self assess so no doubt there will be claims for pensions, professional fees, agents fees etc to come out of that. At 20K a week, his take home through PAYE his take home would be £10,804 per week before an sacrifices for pensions etc.

He earns £20k per week on a 3 year deal, £3.1m gross. Plus signing on fee and whatever else he may get such as free car etc etc. Lets assume he gets released after a year and ends up in the Championship to ply his trade then he won't be on any less than £10k per week, plus bonuses etc etc. There may be a couple of signing on fees to go into the pot and probably a few bonuses etc etc. He spends the rest of his career "bumming" around that level, earning enough to sustain him not only for his football career but well beyond.

Yep, I would be roaring my eyes out why I hadn't stayed at Sheffield United and possibly earned no move the Premiership, ever. Money isn't everything in life, but it sure helps grease the wheels and makes it a happier existence on a day by day basis.

Can we chuck in some other clichés like Money can't buy happiness (I am yet to meet an unhappy rich person), or "yeah but is he really happy" because I bet you that while his life may not be perfect, getting paid to play football is about as good as it gets. Getting paid to not play football, while not perfect is the chance you take. With the way Hull are going he could be first team soon enough. That may be in the Championship next season but he will still be in a better place than if he was playing for us.

Well constructed - still believe that playing actually beats the financial element at the stage of career he is at - plenty of time to make the bog money move.
My point wasn't about him staying at SUFC but playing football at a competitive level - he should have gone to a champ club and been playing every week
I know enough people who you might think were happy but they aren't - there are other things to life. However, I accept your premise that wealth provides choices and the alternative is much much harder.

Indeed. I suspect Gary Speed had a bob or two. Did not stop him killing himself.

It's easier to be happy with money, but it's noi guarantee.

There are exceptions to every rule but if you were going to top yourself my guess is you would do it rich or poor.

Perhaps he'll get a start next season in the Championship, maybe against us. Who knows it's a funny old game.

Poor bugger will be in the poor house cos he will lose more than half if you include NI. Perhaps we should organise a food parcel. :)
