After Wilder's comments during the week, the last thing that I expected to see yesterday was Ched coming on as sub. Wonder whether he was on the bench out of necessity or whether Wilder's comments were designed to take the pressure off Ched and get some fans off his back?

Thought similar.
Suspect he needed to delay whilst Leon completed suspension.

Ched unlucky with that shot off the bar.

I think it's all mind games.

My thoughts are Ched isn't injured, he's returned to the clubs expecting things to be 'as they were'. He's putting pressure on himself, he wants to repay the fans who stood by him and things aren't going as planned, in his head.

Personally I think Ched has contributed when he's come on, he needs time to get back up to speed with life in the championship but a couple of goals will do his confidence the world of good, those will come in the last 15 mins v the pigs, then we'll all see a new Ched.

Wilder is happy to give him time only 4 months into his contract.

I suppose it's also possible that he does need surgery but can play before he has it. That's rare but I've known it to happen before.

I suspect that the niggles are real, and are generally holding him back.

He's had short bursts. Some where he has looked promising, others much less so. A definite sign something ain't right physically.

If we can get him up from Wilders stated 80% level to somewhere closer to 90%-95%, I'm sure Ched will be a real asset for us going forwards.

I'd like to see that shot that hit the bar again, he hit it well

My understanding was that he needs an op but presumed that he'd just play through it until such time when he can have it. Never really gave it much more thought if I'm honest

I suspect if Lavery and Clarke were available he'd have been rested. But needs as must and he's the only semi fit striker left to go on the bench

My view is that it's that wilder wouldn't say that if it wasn't true

Unfortunately given injuries and suspensions Ched is again having to play through pain and while not 100% fit.

Imo it's the worst possible scenario if he wants to be firing on all cylinders eventually - but we really don't have any alternative.

It's bad news but sharp is essentially our only for striker atm and is gonna to be for the forseable future and we now have dramatically slim pickings off the bench in an attacking sense. Time for Thomas to step up?

I suspect once Lavery is back, Evans will drop to 5th in the pecking order and will see limited game time later in the season. He's not an 'impact' player because he has no notable pace or arial presence, so can't see him being used too much. He will have a real battle to get into the reckoning if/when this operation is meant to happen.

<< Although United’s limited options in attack mean Wilder would prefer Evans to play his way back into shape, coaching staff will consider taking more drastic steps after consulting with the Championship club’s physiotherapy and conditioning departments.

“The situation with Ched is that we can’t get him up to full speed,” Wilder said. “We’ve seen cameos and glimpses. He’s not entirely happy with the situation, because he can’t really progress. He’s at about 75 per cent to 80 per cent. “I thought he made a great impact against Derby for us and the same at Middlesbrough. But there’s just something holding him back a little bit. It’s not major, it’s not season ending, it’s just trying to get Ched back to 100 per cent. We might work with him in a slightly different way or something.” >>

Given the lack of other options he will be playing his way back in to shape as per Plan A

There aren't any fans on his back. He gets adulation from the stands, way beyond anything he's earned, and a small percentage of fans simply pointing out on message boards that his contribution so far has been a million miles off what we need right now.

Also think the injuries are real - an obvious by-product of two years out of the game. May also be still adjusting psychologically to playing again.

Was going to post something similar- I hadn't been aware fans were on his back.
