I think Darren has climbed down from that now. It may be due to the profile of the case, that if the verdict is ruled unsafe there will be the demand for a retrial.

I think this will muddy the waters enough for the conviction to stand.

No she originally claimed her drink was spiked, but the toxicology report found nothing other than cocaine and weed in her system, and there was no evidence to suggest either of the defendants had supplied either of those drugs to her.

They've said they will go for a retrial if he gets verdict overturned so as far as Sheffield United fc are interested this has surely been kicked into the long grass. Can go months or years for a retrial.

But I think that means if he's acquitted, the CPS will look for a re-trial meaning in the interim period, he would technically be innocent until proven guilty again. In theory, there's no reason he couldn't sign for someone but the issue hanging over him might still put off us and others.

Surely our resident court correspondents can give their own subjective view of the likelihood of him signing for us? That wouldn't be reporting on the hearing.....

Yes he would be but would you sack him again if he was found guilty again ( even though he'd most likely not do jail time) far too much of a mess for any club but especially us to get involved in. And would of been 4/5 years since he played a game. Total non starter as far as i am concerned until all the legal channels dry up

- if you quash the original verdict, we'll order an expensive new trial? (there is a footballing analogy - if you score, I'm going to take my ball home)

seems sly (if unsubtle) and we'll see what the judges themselves think about it sometime soon - IF they found the appeal convincing.

As has been said , it's the courts decision as to whether a new trial will take place, not the CPS, though there may well be politic pressure on the court to grant a retrial due to the nature of the offence.

yep Highbury, that doesn't contradict my opinion. I don't think the CPS are above politicking, like their close relations the Police, they seem as interested in public relations as they are in justice.
