Blades Talk: Why I love fish & chips, Bovril, and Bramall Lane!

TH0_1811201039Charlie Webster(2).jpg

NOW I was going to go straight into a rant over my disappointment so far this season of the mighty Sheffield United's, well...lack of mightiness.
But then, if I think about it, I was disappointed last year and the year before, so to steer my first column away from one big moan I'm going to start with Billy McEwan - sorry Gary Speed, I'll get around to you later.

I went to my first football match when I was four with my dad.

Billy was in charge and Leeds United was our opposition.

To be fair I spent the majority of the game learning swear words, eating fish and chips and drinking Bovril.

And that is where my love for Bovril and of course football and Sheffield United began!

It's been an emotional ride as any other fellow Blade will testify.

My first trip to Wembley, 1993, when Sheffield United lost the FA Cup semi final 2-1 against our biggest rivals Sheffield Wednesday, I cried - come on I was only 11!

Actually I think my dad shed a few tears as well.

Not that long ago I cried again thanks to my beloved Blades, this time when I was presenting on air. And that wasn't good; I'm supposed to be a hard Northern bird.

Once again Sheffield United had been relegated from the top flight.

I managed to fight back the tears though when Burnley took our place in the Premier League, although I thought my Grandma was going make the whole team cry she was that angry with them.

Maybe I need to get my Grandma to have a cheeky word with Gary Speed.

So bringing it back to now, I am hoping for a positive result on Saturday (Crystal Palace) and an even more hopeful about a general turn around in fortunes.

As I've mentioned, we've been through ups and downs, so things have to come good at some point.

I think everyone should back Gary Speed, he may have little experience and may even be too close to the changing room as a former player but it will do us no good chopping the gaffer now, as some have suggested.

I don't believe in finger-pointing at a manager at the first sign of trouble.

Anyway Speed has only been our manager five minutes and he's not a miracle worker, although I wish he was.

The fact is he can only do what he can do with the players he's got.

It takes time but the boss is starting to realise our strengths and weaknesses and with that becomes one of the most vital objectives for the Championship: consistency.

I suppose the one question though that is on my mind is, are funds going to be made available?

What movement, if any, will there be in the January transfer window?

Are loans and free transfers going to be the order of the day?

My one gripe with the recent months, apart some of the results of course, is that Kevin McCabe and those at the top of the club should communicate more with us fans.

Communication is everything.

I don't know about you but I feel like nobody knows what he's doing and I can see a split appearing amongst the fans over our chairman.

For what it's worth I think we should hang on in there as we'd be in a lot worse a position without him.

Look at what's happening over the road with Sheffield Wednesday. Need I say more?

And for the stalkers amongst you: twitter.com/charliecw

Interestingly, for those who were around here when all the stuff with West Ham was kicking off, she has also presented on Channel Bee. We had their cast member "Tony the Hammer" come on here trying to cause trouble. He was dealt with in ruthless fashion...

It's just a shame that Tony the Hammer is now probably unemployed...

Hubba Hubba!

I always think that our female fans are fitter than the porcine equivelant

I must confess that her talents have so far passed me by. She seems extremely well-informed on the Blades - she must read this site (surely she's not Len or Mic in disguise?!).

I've looked her up on Wikipedia and she shares my birthday so she's obviously a good lass.

Well, that's me in love...:heart::heart::heart:

I even agree with all her opinions. And even if I didn't I'd pretend to. :D

She'd definitely get it, but......

A bird with an opinion?

NOOOOOooooooooo!!!!!!!!!

That interview/column, would suggest to me that she definitely reads this place!

Let's hope so. Then she'll read this:

That article was close to the worst thing I've read all year. It's so badly written - it reads like a 16-year-old's diary. Please spare the reading public of Sheffield from any more of this drivel. Ta.

Dear Charlie

Don't listen to the nasty man. If you're at all upset I can help in many many ways....

Yours skillfully

I very much doubt it was meant to be a column that was deep and thought provoking to the intellectual football supporter!

So we can add "low in ambition" and "intentionally bad" to the list too then. Why was it even written then?

To fill column inches? I'd rather read that, with that pic at the top, than some other inane drivel from James Shield!

Go on Linz lass - fill yer boots!!! :D

Why, is Linz any good at cooking?

So we could look at her foto and discuss how much we'd like to give her one?

Gentlemen. Must every good-looking woman be reduced to to a sex object? Surely we have reached a state of enlightenment where such things are beneath us, and truly, I wouldn't mind her being beneath me...

Dunc,
49, married with teenage kids
Forgot about all of that years ago.
Would rather have a nice cup of tea... :( `

Looks like the very thought of it is causing you to stutter Duncs:)

I take it you've stopped the fish n chips then :)

I'm not abstinant, nor has it lost its appeal, but as you mature there are lots of other thing than chasing pretty girls or eating chips and cake to occupy you. It is natures way of helping you to cope with gradually becoming completely unattractive to the opposite sex.

She's my sister...

Whoops. Looks like apologies are in order...
