Just hours after being linked with Wolves left back Matt Hill, rumours from North of the Border are saying United have enquired about the availability of Aberdeen's Charlie Mulgrew. Charlie can play in position across the back four and in across the midfield.

Charlie has experienced football briefly in England and would maybe jump at the chance to test himself a this level again. Mulgrew rejected a new deal with Aberdeen a few months ago and that has alerted a lot of clubs. If United do make a move they face a race with Reading and probably Blackpool.

The big question is do we need a left back?

Question is who are half of the people you have made threads about?

You cant just make players up you know. :D

ABERDEEN star Charlie Mulgrew is on the verge of a return to the English Championship with Sheffield United.

[FONT=Verdana, Helvetica, Arial]Express Sport can reveal that the out-of-contract Aberdeen left-back has been offered a three-year deal by the Bramall Lane outfit.

The former Wolves defender, who knocked back a new contract at Pittodrie, held discussions with Blades boss Kevin Blackwell last week and is set to sign on his return from holiday.

Blackwell, who sees Mulgrew as a replacement for Scottish international Gary Naysmith after his defection to Huddersfield, said last night: “There is a possibility Charlie Mulgrew could join Sheffield United.

“He has been on our radar for some time and we received some good reports.
“I am not really at liberty to divulge too much more because things are still at a delicate stage.”
Mulgrew first went down to the Championship from Celtic to Wolves and failed to settle, but now feels he is better equipped.

Mulgrew had other offers on the table from English sides as well as from Portuguese outfit Maritimo, German side St Pauli and teams in Turkey and Greece.

This is another blow to Aberdeen manager Mark McGhee, who has already lost captain Mark Kerr to Greek side Asteras Tripolis.

Midfielder Gary McDonald also looks set to leave Pittodrie now his contract has come to an end.

What do you think?

bizzare!!

Not to sound too much of a computer game geek (ok maybe a tad!) but I just signed him on my Sheff Utd season on FIFA10 (he's great as a cheap quality lb signing btw!) so instanlty recognised the name.

Hope he's half as good as he is rated on there!

I'm really liking the sort of players we're signing and being linked with this summer, and IF by some freakin maraculous (sp?) way we manage to sign Surman and SE-B too...then ffs....

I think i'd pass out with the pure excitement and ambition! ;)

SHEFFIELD UNITED - CHAMPIONSHIP WINNERS 2010/2011

I'd definitely have a few bob on that!

Can't see it though! :(

UTB!

Hugh...............Pugh...............Charlie Mulgrew.................Cuthbert...................Dibble...................Grub! :)

Some Aberdeen opinions:

Im not losing any sleep over him departing the dons, for me he can't tackle and still unsure of his best position, also he's a young lad but already he's played for a few teams which is a worry,he has a decent left foot and scored some cracking free kicks for us,all in all he is ok,if he does sign for you guys then its for financial reasons,he seems to think he is a big time charlie, please pardon the pun

Could go far in the game if he upped his workrate and improved his attitude, time is starting to run out for him to do this though. Decent set piece player but never a defender, I agree with previous comment in that he doesnt really have a position that suits him.

Sorry, but he is up his on derierre, no disrespect, but if he thinks moving to Brentford will further his career.... He has a good left foot but he is not a good defender, take him away please.

Charlie by name, (BIG TIME)Charlie by nature!

One trick pony with free kicks.

Can't defend too well.
No pace for midfield.
Probably his best position is centre half.

Good luck to the bloke, if someone offered my more money for an easier life then I would take it. If he does though his ambition is his wallet not anything else.

"Very good footballer, but a poor defender.

Naturally a left back, but has played left midfield. Played some of his best games as an emergency centre half.

Lacks pace, lacks strength (despite being 6'3"), positioning is poor.

Great left foot, good composure and nice awareness when in possession.

Set piece specialist.

I won't miss him. The goals he scores/creates are cancelled out over the season by the goals he is at fault for due to his poor defending."

I'm pretty sure he was at Wolves and Southend previously, from what I saw of him his defensive play was very lacklustre but his delivery from set pieces was pretty good.

I'd prefer a better defensive player if I'm honest.

i was excited by this until i read the aberdeen opinions but you never know...fingers crossed for surman, ebanks-blake and mulgrew.

What is more important a defensive left back or an attacking left back. As was mentioned by Townsend last night - you have to accept that Johnson isn't the best defensive player, but you do have his attacking flare. And the same is with Cole.

We were very lucky to have a season and a half with two players who we great going forward and quick enough to cover any mistakes they made when defending. Was Boborkis the best defensive full back? He was bloody good going forward though!

Also I think I would be a big time charlie in Aberdeen - he will meet better players here and some who will keep his feet on the ground (he realise that the first time he shales Morgs' hand). I would like to have the chance to see what he can do with us.

I think Johnson, Cole, Naughton and Walker are pretty much complete full backs, who are quite good defensively, although even better offensively. Borbokis excelled in a 3-5-2 wingback system, but we couldn't get the same performances from him when we switched to 4-4-2.

I think Andy Taylor looked quite allright going forward last season, but very uncomfortable with wingers running at him, to the point that he needed a lot of help from our left midfielder. Personally, I'd try to look for modern type full backs with pace who can handle themselves defensively, but also go forward and overlap.

I agree that would be the ideal, but how many of them are available on a free? We got up to £10mill for two who were able to play like that! The other point is we are discussing a player who most of us haven't seen and listening to other fans' perspectives. Most of the people who make comments on here have strong views and depending on who you listen to a player is either a world beater or a panel beater. Maybe we should suck it and see for ourselves.

Another decent player linked with us!
Im liking the players we are linked with at the moment.
I think signing Simmonsen is a must though.

Looks like he may be off to Celtic instead:

Mulgrew shuns Blades to join Celtic

SPECIALIST: Paradise regained for Mulgrew

Charlie Mulgrew is poised to make a surprise return to Celtic. The 24-year-old defender, who is out of contract after two seasons at Aberdeen, is set to shun Sheffield United after a late bid from his former club.

The free-kick specialist was on the verge of a move to the English Championship but the lure of a return to Parkhead is likely to prove too much to resist after Hoops manager Neil Lennon made his move.

Mulgrew came through the youth ranks at Celtic but was transferred to Wolves after a disagreement with then manager Gordon Strachan. He signed for the Dons in a £100,000 deal in the summer of 2008 and impressed during two seasons at Pittodrie, particularly with his dead-ball prowess.

Lennon, who was captain when Mulgrew was a youth player, remained an admirer throughout and is keen to give the defender a second chance at the Glasgow club.

Aberdeen were resigned to losing the Scotland under-21 international. He rejected an initial offer of a new deal and then knocked back an improved proposal.

Mulgrew had intimated he was keen to prove himself in England after an unhappy spell at Wolves and on loan at Southend but the chance to return to his boyhood club holds special appeal.

There is a fine line between success and failure in football and it is called Hadrian's Wall.

CHARLIE Mulgrew looks set to snub Brentford to sign for Championship side Sheffield United.
The Bees have been tracking the Aberdeen left-back all summer as they want to bring in a replacement for the departed Ryan Dickson.
The 24-year-old is due to hold talks with his agent Kevin Drinkell this week after returning from holiday, but we understand his switch to Bramall Lane is a done deal, according to boss Andy Scott.
He said: "Charlie is due to sign for Sheffield United, so nothing will be happening there.”

I dont understand what's going on with this fella. Is he going to Celtic, Brentford or United???? Also, what a strange array of clubs!!!!

I couldn't give a toss who we sign now as long as they serve a purpose and want to play for our club. Some of these players and agents piss about so much pushing for a bit more money.....just make a fecking decision so we can all get on with it.

The papers make it up. Simple as.

It goes like this. He is looking for another club. We need a player in his position. We are keen on him. Simple.

Doesn't have to be any truth. It's just like six degrees of separation.

Good fun watching people getting all hot & bothered about what is little more than guesswork.

Interestingly i'd heard that Forest had shown and interest in Billy Sharp. After narrowly missing out on promotion last season, they're looking to increase their firepower and a striker like Billy would really fit into their style of play.
