There was a little run of games where he was really good. Tough in the tackle decent distribution (for a Bassett team) I think he played in the 0-2 away at Forest when we sent them down and I really thought we had the making of a good team with him a part of it at that point. . . Forest were shit though and might have made us look particularly good!

Yes, he crossed for Gayle's goal after Whitehouse played a short corner to him.

I stopped short of saying he was a good player! Because he wasn’t!)

More than a bit harsh IMHO.

I liked Charlie . Hard as nails but also a much better footballer than many gave him credit for .

That's how I remember him. A tough lad who certainly wasn't going to get intimidated in the tunnel by Keane, Vieerra or any other 'hard man' (Razor Ruddock - ho ho ho).

He came up on Thursday to do the show and was out last night with a mate of mine plus a couple of other ex Bassett Blades. Hopefully I'll get a few stories next week and if so, I'll post them on here to cheer up Pinchy .

Much like now, it was a really good time to be a Blade.

After coming home from the 0-0 draw at home to Liverpool in the League Cup during the 1992-93 season (Charlie wasnt playing), I decided to watch the YTV highlights of the match. There was something that had happened that I didnt notice at the match but had just found out by watching the highlights. The Liverpool players were coming out of the tunnel 5 minutes before the kick off, Charlie quickly approached Michael Thomas (who played with him at Arsenal) and seemed to shout insults at him before throwing his plastic cup at him. Thomas grinned and ignored him.

That was the when Satdi comes game , i thought the second half would be delayed because Sean B.ean , could not find the net , Hartfield may have cost us that game being old mann..ed by a clever Frog .🐸🇫🇷🐸🇫🇷🐸🇫🇷
Was that the Cantona chip? Incredible goal

I asked if he still lived around Sheffield and he said he’d moved back to London. He didn’t elaborate on why!

I had that very same conversation with him about 5 years ago when he did some work at the Lane.

My memory sometimes plays me false; but that night, I remember BDTBL being three sided with the JS a building site, a gale blowing, crisp packets on the pitch doing mini tornadoes, Paul Heaton in the south stand wearing a big russian fur hat and Cantona with the deftest of finishes just between Kelly's fingertips and the underside of the bar.

Haha, that's exactly how I remember it (minus Paul Heaton)

If your reading this good luck Charlie!

Gambling is a terrible addiction. My dad was in a mess for many years with it and it affected us all growing up.

Yep, me too. Always wondered why we had less money than everyone I knew, given my Mum and Dad both had reasonable jobs.

Later found out it was the bandits. 😰

Yeah my dad was bad on the horses. (Being Irish) If he had a bad day at the horses then he would come home and take whatever money we had left and go straight back out. (Probably chasing the losses) Of course he would also drink alongside this. So if he had lost all the money he would then come home blind drunk and in a terrible mood.
Thankfully as he has gotten older he has moderated this so is no were near as bad.

I do think gambling addiction is a really bad issue in this country. And it's all so easy to start down that road these days. What with the advent of technology now. It's so easy to put on a bet with your mobile phone. It's almost As if your playing with imaginary money. (Of course you aren't though) it's just numbers on a screen. I do think that the industry is not regulated enough. It's almost too easy to sign up and place a bet within seconds.
Something needs to be done if you ask me.

On line betting sites has taken gambling to a whole new level. For years I used to walk into my local bookies on a Saturday morning and put a few quid on the footie fixed odds. Now I can do exactly the same without leaving my front room.

Some will say what’s the difference and that you are still in control of your own actions and to a certain degree that’s correct but it’s the overall convenience and accessibility that now makes it easier than ever to get drawn in.

Now I still like to think I’m reasonably sensible with my on line bets however I’d by lying if I said there hadn’t been a few Saturday nights after a few drinks where I’ve placed bets that I’d never usually place both in terms of amounts and the sporting events that I’m betting on. I’ve come out of them relatively unscathed but I’ve only placed these bets because I’ve been able to do so with a glass of wine in my hand sat on the sofa.

The buzz with a win is fantastic, the frustration with a loss is to either curse yourself or try to recoup your losses with another bet. Even with small stakes and with money you can afford to lose, it’s only a small step away from getting addicted.

I’ve every sympathy for anyone who does end up taking that next step and the damage can be life changing

never mentioned Wormwood Scrubs did he?;)

Not quite.

When I innocently asked what his Dad was up to these days he just said 'this and that'.

In fairness it must have been just before he went down because when I heard he'd got a stretch it was only a few months later.

Considering the conditions, the quality of goalkeeper and the non-existent margin for error, that remains the greatest goal I've ever seen live, and the only occasion I've applauded an opposition goal. Exquisite, sumptuous, genius.

I agree, it's the best goal I've ever seen live too. The view from behind the goal here, it's like he hit it with a sand wedge
