When I played football , only pub league standard, I played centre half , the reason ? Because I'm 6ft4 daft as a brush and can't play football ! My point is why do our centre halfs have the lion share of our Possesion at there feet ??? They are centre halfs for a reason , they are 6ft4 daft as brushes and can't play football !!! I was good at tackling , heading and kicking the ball as far as was needed but give me the ball at my feet , no not interested just panic !! These mangers are paid a lot of money , but why have the last 3 we have had seem to forget THAT CENTRE HALFS CANT PLAY FOITBALL !!!

Recon Kennedy will start tomorrow and if he does OK in the league games

The game is changing. More and more these days, centre halves can play a bit. But, they still need to be able to do the basics which is where we fell down with McEveley. He wasn't bad a playing out from back by centre half standards but he was a liability as he couldn't do the basics of defending. Heading, tacking etc. Collins does those basics but still gets stick for not being good enough. Same criticism was levelled at McCarthy.

Basham can defend and play out reasonably well but is needed in midfield cos the likes of Baxter/Reed/Coutts/Scougall are all either, too lightweight, slow, lazy, undisciplined or a combination of those things to play as proper central midfielders.

If this Dan Burn loan is a non-starter, then Mr A needs to move on and he needs to do it now. Our defence is leaking goals like the old proverbial sieve at the moment (Burton excepted)

Very easy to answer - our midfield 4 very rarely show for the ball - don't want the ball and if given it, want to off load it as quickly as possible.

If you had the pleasure of watch Coady - he always wanted the ball - schooled the right way at L'pool.

I saw his debut - came on a sub - did it from minute 1 - trouble was it was alien to all the other players.

This is partly why we need 2 x proper central midfielders (Hammond?) and why we were (last season) crying out for 2 proper centre halves. Think we all thought Edgar was one - shame he's been crap since his September jaunt with Canada.

Now James Wallace would have had it off the centre halves, and he would have done something with it - sadly, it looks like we will be buying a treatment table and putting a named plaque on it for him.

Not sure who some of us have been watching, but I can recall plenty of central defenders who could play, and play well.

Paul McGrath, remember him?
Mark Lawrenson, forget the TV pundit, but as a footballer he was a thoroughbred. His partner, Hansen, was pretty useful too.
And looking farther afield, there was Der Kaiser, Franz Beckenbauer. Anyone care to typecast Beckenbauer as a limited player? Oh, mustn't forget our very own Bobby Moore, didn't he win the World Cup? And just to add to this illustrious group, Marius Tresor, Lilian Thuram, Paolo Maldini, and Alessandro Nesta, plus far too many to add to this list.

Of course a central defender had first and foremost to be able to defend, but there have been plenty of defenders who, with the ball at their feet, could use it effectively without panicking.

Compared to the above, a player like David Luiz should hang his head in shame.

Problem is, at this level, you're not likely to get such complete players so it's a case of striking a balance. I think Collins and Basham would make a decent partnership but as I say, we need Basham in midfield. Edgar is a strange one. Looked great in his first 3 or 4 games and has been poor in the last 4 or 5. Let's hope he can recover some form. I missed the Vale game but my brother went and tells me Ikpeazu made a mug of Edgar all game.

'Halves'

No worries.
Why? Half is a quantity and the plural is halves.
Centre half is a position in football and could just as easily be spelt centre-half.
So why does the plural of centre half have to be centre halves and not centre halfs? Other than because spell check says so?

You raise a good point. 'centre half' or 'centre-half' is a compound noun (a noun composed of 2 other words). It doesn't necessarily follow that its plural would be centre-halves.
Here endeth today's grammar lesson.

Fuck me I was the same if I went over the halfway line I got a nose bleed

Collins does the basics.... just read through Bergans posts on how we've conceded goals... you will find Collins is at fault more times than McEveley... in fact the review of Saturday was he was to light in his tackles...

forget about the 's'

we'll only sign one max.

center or centre is another argument and why the hyphon its not required
its not center-point , its center point
central defender does that need a hyphon
centre-forward nah no hyphon there
Ill ask in the Central-Library

there is no need to follow like sheeps

I think in Roygbiv's View From... the fans' view was that he had been tried there but really wasn't suited to the role

Yeah he played that role at Huddersfield last season but their fans weren't impressed. I must admit that it has crossed mind to play him there though for a bit if height and strength

We need someone who can run in CM. someone with athleticism who can get up and down the pitch. Edgar would be no different to Basham, Coutts, Baxter.

I suppose we could swap Edgar and Basham but I doubt it would make much difference.

At the end of the day to hyphen or not in centre-half or centre half is just a matter of style and taste, innit?

Would have a better CH with the swap

Maybe. Has he played with Collins much? It's all about partnerships. Last season he had McEv alongside him, who made him look good by being unselfishly shit. I seem to recall he looked good with Brayf too, briefly.
Could he form a partnership with Collins? Can we get games out of Tel? Should we chuck McGahey in and say 'play for your contract'?

Depends who we swap them for? :)

If Adkins uses Kennedy in a meaningless friendly now that he's finally fit then it ought to be shoes/car park time
