I think generally a defensive midfielder can be useful in a 5 man midfield, but doesn't work too good in a 4-4-2. Limits your attacking threat if you've got a midfielder who isn't creative enough. The best form of D is O, as the mericans may or may not say. The main reason to have a DM could possibly be that they're easier and cheaper to sign. :)

.

Have we ever had a well working midfield partnership where both players go forward equally much?

Not sure. I remember Bassett saying that Willie Falconer (who played well in his first month with us) was going forward too much for his liking. We sold him a few months later

Perhaps he felt he had to go further forward to reach the punts that were routinely flying over his head?

It depends how Scougall does in training. He was superb against Fulham but it was counter attack with therefore loads of space as Fulham were pushing up using their man advantage. There isn't normally that much space in a league game. I would like to see what he can do and see if he could break down the oppositions defence, but we have to give him time to adapt. Also should we not call him Scoogs in respect for the Livi fans who now follow us because of him and follow this board?

I agree [see post 20]. Scoogs it is!

I ❤️ Scoogs!

Maybe so with Hockey / Curry, but Brown / McCalll could both tackle / hold / pass well.

Let's face it, we got the Premier leauge with Monty in the middle. To to say it can't work is clearly wrong. But I'm with Pinchy in that I'd prefer to see 2 players with a more balanced mix, even if one is more of "one than the other".

Hockey could play a bit. He was a winger at Brum before he joined us. He was a veritable Platini compared to the likes of The Maestro and Mrs. Doyle.

Given that Clough seems to like Doyle in there (at least for the rest of the season) then it seems to me that there is one place to be decided between McGinn, Scougall and Coady. Not sure we need anyone else in at the moment in that department. Personally,I'd give Scougall a go!
Yes,I'd give Scougall a go..I watched the 2nd half back again last night and he did great..made me smile,he's that sort of player. He looked like he'd been in the side all season, and if Baxter and Murphy had picked him out a couple of times when he'd took up good positions,he would have maybe got on the score sheet.
For me,maybe a Flynn,Coady,Scougall,Murphy midfield for Crewe..they all work hard off the ball and Flynn,Scougall and Murphy were getting forward, but also work hard when we haven't got the ball..the whole team did v Fulham to be fair.It was good to see so many United players running with the ball..even the Full a Backs were pushed up at times in the final third, even with ten men.
Anyway..is it Scoog's or Scoug's.

As ever, the memory plays tricks when you get older Pinchy. We'll not enter the Monty/Doyle arena thank you, yours and my feelings on those two are well known and entrenched enough :)
However, a lot of guff is talked about Trevor Hockey on here, he was at best, a good foil for TC for a very short period of time. Very basic, ball winner, dirty, slow as fuck (sound familiar?;)). I saw him have some stinkers and a few good 'uns plus plenty of 6/10's.
And yes, strangely enough I saw him play as a winger for both Bradford City & Brum, pretty average there too, but a bit showy with it.

P.S. I Love Scougall too :)

I'm for Scoogs. It's what you youngsters call 'cool' I think.

No need for the apostrophe though, unless you are using a possessive noun, for example Scoogs' pass to Ports* for that goal was superb [Scoogs's would be equally valid but harder to say].

*Alright, I know, it's just an example!

It's Doogal for me. Totally uncool, but I though he was fucking "ace" in Magic Roundabout.

...then he migrated to Craggy Island!

I was too young and naive to appreciate it but I understand Magic Roundabout could be watched on two levels, one of which was 'cool'.

And as for The Herb Garden...

There are speculations about possible interpretations of the (Magic Roundabout) show. One is that the characters represented French politicians of the time, and that Dougal represented De Gaulle.

There you go .... must be true if Wikipedia says so...

Well it's definately 'Scougs' according to Livi fans...but pronounced 'Scoogs',so that'll do for me.
I think he'll be a big hit at the Lane..like a breath of fresh air.
