Carry Sharp for 85 mins..

I was being facetious. Completely agree though, what he lacked for in pace he more than made up for in reading the pace of the game which got him into those goalscoring positions regularly. He still managed it on Monday when he lobbed the keeper but in years gone by he would have had another 2 or 3 good chances but he no longer gets into those positions as much.

Shame and I would never want to see his stock drop with Unitedites, (he has got plenty in the bank though) but at the moment, we simply haven't got a choice.

Incredibly frustrating that we have gone from the number of strikers/attackers we had last year to having to rely on Billy at nearly 37...

What is concerning, is that we bring young talent through the academy, and they're sold before we get to use them, which is fine, but those funds need to be used to help the first team, and, as far as I can tell, they are not, so far.
This self sustainability our owners talk of, simply isn't possible for a club of our size and position.
It looks as though the greed, if it is that, or whatever it is, of owning several clubs, for whatever reason, is dragging us down now.
Hopefully we do get new owners, and investment, and maybe a lot of luck on the injury front🤞

we are due a bit of luck with injuries lets hope nidaye and mcburnie can keep injury free for the rest of the season
 
I agree, Jebbo gave us much more of a threat when he came on.

I think for Sharp it will be difficult because he’ll also know he’s declining.

I get the feeling he’s not a player that’s happy to sit on the bench so it’s probably for the best he moves on next year regardless of the league we’re in
 
Lets be fair to him he has been written off about every season he has been here.

  • Re sign him under Adkins.... and of course he was the one carrying the team.
  • Season after under Wilder shouldn't be made captain... scores hatfuls.
  • 1st season in Champ not good enough.... scores 14
  • 2nd season in champ need to improve on him....scores 22
  • Back in PL not good enough....arguably true yet scores opening goal of season for us and was starting to get in form just before covid break
  • Relegation season.... less said about the squad the better but still scored a few goals
  • Last season top scorer was in form until injured
  • This season only really got himself fit properly after the WC break. Scored a few goals.
It's true he's at the end of his career and it's also true that give us full set of striking options and he's likely going to be behind McBurnie, N'Diaye and Brewster more often than not for starting roles most weeks.
But he still has a role to play and if we didn't have him right now we would have been a bit screwed last month.

Whether he has another season with us after this is another matter but for now lets just get behind him when he plays.

Unless we lose a key player we ain't bringing anyone in other than maybe a loan.
 
undoubtedly this is billys last season as a player with us he either stays in a coaching capacity or he moves on but what a fantastic servant for the club this man has been lets never forget that fact

Billy has done reasonably well all things considered but he should have been replaced years ago . He has blocked a position and given his high wages stopped the overall improvement of the side.
I know not easy for the club to move on what has been a brilliant club servant.

This is nonsense.

Sharp is playing at the moment because all of the other forwards are injured or too raw
He was playing last season for the same reasons. he was also the only one who could adapt to what Slav wanted from a lone striker up front.
He was playing a bit in the PL because other players were injured. When players were fit, he did not start.

If Brewster and/or McBurnie were fit, he would not be starting.

There has been no point in his United career since re-signing that starting Sharp has been blocking a better option.

I do not understand why people cannot see this for themselves. Sharp is in the side because he's basically the only option.

And he's going to get more minutes, whether people like it or not, because our youngsters are not ready, Brewster ain't back any time soon, and McBurnie simply cannot be relied on to stay fit.

For years I have read loads of bollox on here about getting rid of Sharp/He's slow/he only scores pens and yet 7 years on and several massive money transfers he is the only consistent one to put the ball in the net when played.

We also shouldn't have got rid of him 1st and 2nd times round.

premier league players over 30 there’s a fair few doing okay you know and one or two over 35

He came on the last 15 minutes when they where out on their feet. If he had started I think it would have been a different story of how ineffective he'd been.
 
By rights he should have been replaced and either have left or be bottom of the pecking order by now as a 36 year old striker but it's down to Billy who has continued to deliver which is why he's still here and arguably our lack of nous in the transfer market when it comes to finding someone else who can hit the net on a consistent basis who we can a) afford and b) is better than we've already got. We're skint and dirt cheap strikers who score 20+ goals a season a pretty hard to come by.

Plenty of other strikers have come and gone since Adkins brought him back yet he's still here because he continues to succeed where all the others have failed - see Mousset, Brewster, McBurnie (until recently) alongside various others like Lavery, Madine, Hogan, Washington who have all come and gone.

Leon Clarke and David McGoldrick are the only strikers alongside Billy who have troubled the scorers to any great extent during that time.

While they're fishing in very different ponds, you could say the same about Ibrahimovic or Lewandowski, other blokes who should have been relegated to bit part players but continue to deliver the goods.
 
If you're not making chances then Sharp always looks like a weak player. But even in his last few games, he's scored a couple, and even on a bad night like QPR he was still on the end of our best chance of the night and you'd back him to finish it more than he misses.

Yeah, at his age we don't want to depend on him as our main striker till the end of the season, but we should be so happy we have a goal scorer like him in reserve.
 
billy would be on the bench if brewster and mcburnie were fit but in any case he should only be starting at most 1 game out of every 2 and thats why we need another striker to come in

Spot on mate . There is a great chance of us getting hold of a pot of gold with promotion looking a real possibility but our manager as been told there is no cash available in the transfer window. Today we hear that one of the princess other clubs have been given 5 mill for their transfer budget . May be not a lot in this day and age but its 5 million more than we have . Getting in to the prem is worth 180 mill to us ,not to be sniffed at . Spending 5 mill on a loan striker could get the job done .

We’re all entitled to our views but for me, in the absence of McBurnie, our most dangerous forward line is Berge-Ndiaye-McAtee.

He played as the only centre forward in the last 6 games of last season, scoring 3 times and assisting once. He was a constant threat in the away game with only the keeper’s telescopic legs keeping him from putting us in the final.

He’s also very good shielding the ball and retaining possession not to mention dribbling past players in tight area. Against the last line of defence that is the last thing a big head it-kick it defenders wants.

I think he can play that role especially now he is more experienced. He’d just play it slightly less conventionally than a big target man type.

I’m not overly convinced Brewster gets in ahead of Sharp.

Apart from a handful of matches last season, there is a lot banked on Brewster based on good faith rather than actual evidence in a Sheffield United shirt.

How many last minute pens has a Billy scored? What happened when Brewster stepped up for the glory against Blackpool? It was all very predictable. Billy is far more likely to show the composure of a cute finish whereas Rhian is far more likely to just hit it as hard as he can.

He had MGW up there as well, didn't he? If you play that forward line I merely put two players on Ndiaye and I win. Berge doesn't make runs and neither really does McAtee. How is the ball going forward? What are the defenders doing when they need to clear? I just don't think it works against most teams, especially with the wingbacks not getting that forward.

not so sure robbie a 3 - 4 - 3 set up with those 3 up top looks ok to me especially for home games norwood and a fully fit doyle would be good enough as the midfield 2 and berge is certainly much better the further up the pitch he is plus it would give billy a long overdue rest

You mean like Sharp.. who QPR were so un-bothered by him being a focal point of the attack they put 3 (Yes THREE) players on Ndiaye.

Sharp isn't good enough or quick enough anymore to be the focal point of our attack and instead feeds off the scraps his teammates provide him.

At least with Mcatee you get pace, movement, trickery and teams wouldn't be able to just go heavy on marking Ndiaye.

I agree with Champagneblade

Ndiaye, McAtee and Berge should be out front 3
(Ndiaye up top, with Mcatee and Berge just behind)
