is it me or after the england game i cant wait for the new season to start. After the shambles today against the germans it feels like england are the sheffield united of the world cup. Now i feel all excited and nobody to support so bring on cardiff im very pleased with blackwells signings so far and quite excited to see who he brings in i know reading alot of peoples comments on here that i am more optomistic than most blades but i really think a top two finish is in our reach.

In what ways? That they've got the right players, they're just not playing right? I reckon United will be more settled this season, the signings look promising and hopefully they'll treat this as a new dawn. I know it's early but just from looking at the names in the table, I'm confident we can put another league between us and Wednesday. Make or break for Blackwell.

I know what he's meaning. Only United or England could go out to bad luck like that. Go in 2-2 at half time and that's a different game altogether. Rubbish! Goal line tech is a MUST

yeah i agree witht the unlucky part but its only us and england who always manage to not turn up in a big gam like wolves palace burnley and for england you have croatia germany brazil need i go on i think a english manager is needed and some young blood from the under 21s.

If we had gone in at half time 2-2, Germany would have beaten us 4-2. We never looked like winning the game and only rallied for 15-20 minutes in a bold attempt to rescue the situation. We were soundly beaten and the 'would be goal' wouldn't have made a blind bit of difference. They were just better than us.

Oh yes it would, I had a £10 on Lampard to score, it would have made about £50 worth of difference

I think that the loss of that "goal" could well have had a severeley deflating effect on the players. Had it gone in, I'm not sure we would have gone down by 4-2 and I think we might have given a better account of ourselves.

Nothing we can do about it though and we were still cack and deserved to lose anyway.

I'm actually looking forward to the rest of the world cup. I'm looking forward to Chile Brazil tonigh, Spain Portugal on Tue, Argentina Germany on Saturday and a host of other mouth watering fixtures. I couldn't give 2 fucks about England getting knocked out. They were pathetic and got tore apart by a good heard working German team. Sure I wanted England to win, but I am not going to get upset for wakers like Ashley Cole, JT, Lamps, Gerrard and Rooney. They are a bunch of overpaid flops and got exactly what they deserved.

As for United, well I'm looking forward to the new season, but I'm not optimistic. I think we're still a long way away from being a decnet side (despite positive steps) and I have no faith in Blackwell. So on the pitch I'm resinged to us not doing very well (still predicting a bottom half finish) but off the pitch is slightly different. Living in London I am looking forward to getting to Milwall, Pompey and the usuals (Palace, QPR and Watford) as well as Reading and Bristol C and maybe some midlands teams (Derby, Forrest etc). I'll be coming back to Sheff for a few games and always look forward to going back to BDBTL. I hope to meet a few more members of the forum (the one's that don't want to punch me ;) ) as well as catch up with some of the one's Ive met.

I must admit, on the United side of things I'm not sure whether to be bubbling with optimism or not. Its a bit of an intriguing situation because we're likely to look a lot different come the start of the season. With the players we now have I would be surprised if Blackwell didnt adopt a 4-3-3 formation going into the new season. We appear to have the sort of players that would fit this system now and with the 4-4-2 system appearing to become redundant, this will likely start to filter down the divisions.

Personally, I would like to see us go with something a little different as this might be what we need. I could see us lining up like this over the course of the season. With Britton, Monty and Williamson (when fit) we seem to have good enough balance between them to play a midfield three. I would like to see us then operate with Ward high up on the right and Cresswell high up on the left. Boggy or Ched could be the focal point in the middle. With this system we would have the flexibility to switch back to 4-4-2 quickly if it is required.

What are people's thoughts on system and team selection for the new season? Undoubtedly Blacky will probably baffle us all and go with something none of us expect

I too would love to see us play that system, and agree that we are looking as if we have the midfielders to do it. If we did play this way, I would rather like to see Sharp as the focal point up top...............

It would be great to see that on a regular basis but somehow I think it will never happen. Sharp is 99% sold from what I can gather.

Based on his record in a Blades shirt I dont see how any of us can argue with it either (provided they get a decent fee). Such a shame but it hasnt worked out.

You may be right, but who was it said "Goals change games"? Going in at half-time on 2-2, the impetus would have been with England. Germany would have been very disappointed to have blown a 2-goal lead. Capello could have reorganised our defence, and who knows what might have happened? We might even have won the match on penalties.

Then we would have been ready to be thrashed by Argentina.

Maybe it all goes back to that sloppy goal conceded in the first game. If we'd won the group we'd have faced Ghana with a more confident team.

Not trying to make excuses. We were never going to win the World Cup. That was just media hype, trying to sell more newspapers and tatty memorabilia. (There's some cheap England shirts in the shops today!).
