This is not a Hecky out thread before anyone says owt.

My concern is that he often seems to get his starting 11 wrong, making changes relatively early that change the game, Mcatee on Saturday and Khadra against Bristol City stick out, along with swapping Mcatee for Ndiaye against Norwich.

It could be argued that he’s flexible and those changes produced results but these are changes to cure a problem that he created.

Every manager that ever existed will have got things wrong at time

I think it's just more apparent this season because we're allowed to make more subs. Previously you needed to save your subs and if you got it wrong, you had to just deal with it. Now if you need to switch it up you can do

100% this. Including HT you can make subs 4 times with 5 subs to bring on.

This is a really good point, the rules regarding the subs must encourage managers to make quicker changes.

It makes it easier to change shape/system if things aren't working out early on, Hecky said as much when he spoke about bringing Reda off in the first half the other week.

You could say that Hecky doesn't always get the starting 11 right, but on the other hand you could make the point that he's able to see when he's got it wrong and tries to put it right early on - some managers would either not see what's going wrong or not be brave enough to make first half subs and admit they got it wrong.

People act like it's just Hecky picking his 11 and that is all there is to it. But there is another manager in each game picking an opposite 11 and if you set your team up to counter a specific threat but they spring a surprise and play slightly differently surely it's the sign of a good manager who can recognise that and react appropriately?

In fairness there are a few games where it isn't obvious what to pick and be happy with it.

Often it's been:
  • we have no left sided players of note to pick.
  • you can pick the right players in the right positions however 3 of them are only 50% fit and could break down easily.
  • you pick an experienced player slightly out of position or an inexperienced one in his correct one.
  • you pick someone who is massively out of form because you have nobody else even though otherwise you'd be resting him.

There's been a fair bit of the above with Stoke being a good example.

I think when he has everyone fit he's aware what his best team is.

I think some fans will always disagree with PH choices, even when he only has 11 fit bodies to choose from!
Hopefully his job gets much harder after the WC break. 🙈
