Can anybody defend McCabe ?

What further compounds this is that we've managed to get ourselves relegated the very season that everyone knew that the league was up for grabs. If that isn't an indictment, I don't know what is.

Looks like I'm one of the few that thinks on the whole McCabe's been good for United. A sight better than most we had before him. Time will tell.

Those before McCabe were small time comdey chairman. As a result, their impact, for better or worse, was extremely limited. McCabe has, to his credit, thought big. The upshot of that, when it goes wrong (investing in the wrong places and the wrong time) is that you're left in much deeper do do than the comedy chairmen could have managed.

Intentions = top of the league
Consequences = bottom of the league.

Yes he did.

Reg Brealey took over as chairman in 1981 with the club in Div 4. He left in 1995 with the club in the championship, having spent 4 years in the top flight under bassett. Admittedly he took over with the club at its lowest ebb ever but what ever happened in the intervening years, he did leave the club on paper at least in a better position.

He left us with a 3 sided ground and a financial position which meant that Bassett had to personally fund the transfer of Brian Gayle.

A bit like 2 bald men fighting over a comb I know, but most clubs would trade a stand for 2 divisions. As for the financial bit, at least we could field a team of our own players in those days.

i'm probably the only one here that thinks this but the whole tevez thing was a fiasco.. it wasn't classy and looked cheap.. i don't care how much money we got, we should have taken it on the chin like real men
maccabe will be judged by where we are when he leaves.. atm we are lower than when he arrived so it doesn't look good for him

Yep, I think it's safe to say you're the only one. :)

That's one thing that I would salute McCabe for.
It's what he's done since that makes him look less than classy and cheap.
He didn't win £20m for nothing, he won it because what happened and what West Ham and the PL did was scandalous.
But having done that, he then effectively scarpers and that really does lack class.

McCabe, mmmmm initially the saviour who has turned what was an excellent position into an absolutely shocking one. He has done this with his appointments, his in and out management (Blackwell's in one minute out the next) his fannying around with signing Bryan Robson, wanting him to stop on as Director of Football, then sacking him, taking the cheap option of Gary Speed and then taking on a man out of his depth in Micky Adams. Thats just the Managers.

Then there is the Tevez thing. Fair play to him for that, he did the right thing but then fucked it all up by pocketing the money and not spending on the team when it needed it the most.

The world cup bid. I remember some people getting a hard on when we bid for it, but those of us who knew it wasn't coming to England, let alone Sheffield United it can be seen to be a complete waste of time, money and resources. To be beaten to the punch by Lee Bastard Strafford (dude) takes some doing.

The academy. Its both good and bad. It has indeed furnished us with the Kyles to which we cashed in to the tune of £8m+. Brilliant we thought, but what has been the benefit to the first team of this now they have both gone? Where is the conveyor belt of talent we were told was coming our way? And now we are not a natural first choice for a kid in Yorkshire to sign for what is the value of the academy? I feel that we now have second rate coaches there and I'm afraid with the academy more than anywhere, you get what you pay for.

Brand building. Who gives a toss about whether we have a presence in China, Belgium, Brazil, Argentina, Australia etc etc etc? What about the supposed benefits of getting non EU players via Belgium (the next Drogba etc). Who really thought that we would be getting the pick of that talent over Man U, Arsenal and Chelsea? What about the hangers on like Birch who are getting big fat pay cheques for Executive roles but who in actual fact seem to add nothing to the club other than to protect McCabe when the fans get a bit oity?

All of the above however pale into insignificance when you take into account the utter dereliction of duty that is first team squad investment. I'll just give you my own viewpoint but I am not alone in this when I say:-

Kevin McCabe. I don't want Sheffield United to be big brand. I don't want clubs all over the world, I don't care for an academy unless I see those players in our first team for a decent period of time. I don't want to see Turkey play Australia in a World Cup game, I don't want a big bulbous hotel on the corner of the ground. I don't want fancy execs protecting you when we are pissed off. I don't want to see the next Drogba (or not) come in the back door via Belgium. I don't want to see some Estonian third choice Goalkeeper on our bench just for the sake of filling the squad (can't we get one through our own academy FFS?)

I just want one thing. I want Sheffield United FC, in Sheffield, South Yorkshire to buy the best possible players it can and play to the best of its ability. I don't expect us to be in the Premiership. I do however not expect us to be in the basement of the Championship either with you stood with your hands firmly in your pockets saying "No money available for players", while you shift the deck chairs around to move money/loans/equity/shares to make yourself look better.

McCabe, right now you are 0 out of 10 as a chairman, four years ago you were pretty much 10 out of 10.

Good, passionate stuff as always Bladesway and great to see McCabe getting the stick he deserves.

However, you don't concentrate enough on the property link ups and the property crash. In fairness to McCabe in summer 2007 he did splash out - wrong man and 6 months too late but he did back the club massively in cash terms. The fall out has been a joke but very long story obviously.

He has ignored the first team because - and obviously this is no more than an educated guess - the banks got very jittery about what was almost certainly (as I believe is potentially shown by the Feb 2010 accounts) negative equity in Blades Realty Ltd and also I imagine the hotel subsid of SUFC plc.. He simply had to use the assets of SUFC Limited to pay off debts falling due elsewhere in the group. Couple that with the issues you quite rightly mention about shocking management choices and you ahve the mess we are in. I really think that cash wise McCabe is not in great shape at all.

Mic, he still appears in 4-4-2's top 100 richest men in football every year so when you say cash wise I understand he isn't loaded but his assets still rack up. Also, isn't there good reason he looks poorer than perhaps he is?

Can anyone defend McCabe? This guy defends him at every turn. Just tune into praise or grumble on Radio Porkfield and Listen to the rantings of Seth Trotter everytime a Blade has the temerity to question McCabe and his handling of the club. According to Seth the truffler McCabe can do no wrong and we all talk bollocks! I heard him grunting defending McCabe after the Milwall match when a fellow Blade questioned the selling of James Beattie at that particular time in the season when we were chasing promotion. Seth Scratching retorted that he (Beattie) had to go as he was trying to renegoataite his contract after just signing a long term deal, and the club couldn't have that. A player on lots more money than others because it would open up the floodgates to everyone. I wonder if Sir Alex takes this into account when negotiating with the likes of Rooney etc and says och sorry laddie I can only pay youz the same money as Wes Brown ! or when Arsey Whinger says to Fabregas mais oui Ces but I can only pay you ze same as Jack wiltshire ! Do they buggery. Seth really ought to keep his snout shut regarding McCabe.

As to being a fan like the rest of us well he isn't, he's a multi millionaire who was running the club. He could change things, he could invest, we couldn't, simple as.

I bumped into him in a pub in New York last season. It was a game when we were on the TV against Newcastle. There were only me and 2 other Blades fans in the pub. He acted like a genuine SUFC fan to me, urging us on, getting angry with the ref, cheering for the Blades etc.
