Blades support Steven campaign

Sheffield United have thrown their support behind fundraising efforts to bring paralysed Steven Griffiths back to South Yorkshire.

Steven, 63, from Wath, was severely injured in November last year while on holiday in Fuerteventura when he slipped while carrying a wheelchair user down a flight of stairs

The Blades supporter of 30 years suffered a broken neck and remains in hospital in Gran Canaria after under-going a series of operations.

Steven's family is campaigning to raise the £22,000 needed to bring him back home to Sheffield Hallamshire Hospital's spinal unit.

The Blades have offered their support after Steven's son-in-law Richard Bramall wrote to United chairman Kevin McCabe asking for his help.

After hearing of Steven's story, Mr McCabe contacted him to confirm the club's backing which will include providing unique pieces of club merchandise to auction off, such as a Blades shirt signed by Ricky Hatton.

Meanwhile, 50 per cent of the proceeds from an auction at the Blades' forthcoming 'Class of 1990' dinner on 16th March will also be donated to the campaign.

Richard said: "When Steven heard that the club was prepared to help him get back home, he smiled and said that he knew they wouldn't let him down.

"We were delighted when Kevin got back in touch with us. Steven has been a United fan for many years, getting to games both home and away. So we thought it was worth asking the club for their support.

"We have currently raised £9,000 thanks to generous donations from people, but we need a lot more to reach the total we need to bring Steven home."

Anyone wishing to give their support to help bring Steven home can contact Richard Bramall on 07878259 555 or visit http://www.justgiving.com/stevensfund

To help raise awareness of the campaign, the Blades will keep fans up to date with how the fundraising is going with details provided on the club website and match programme.

His family has been through hell since this happened with constant flights to and throw to Fuerteventura and several next 24 hours are vital telephone conversations my heart really goes out to Steven and his family he’s stable now and just wants to come home.

Richard emailed Mr Kevin McCabe and was shocked to receive a personal telephone call from Mr. McCabe with in 12 hours direct from Australia.
Me and Richard are overwhelmed by the personal touch and the commitment by such a busy man and big club for this worthy cause please help if you can.
