Thanks to the prince’s Belgian mate on the board, jan van winckle (Bielsa’s right hand man for several years) we now have an inside knowledge on the Belgian leagues. Hopefully Berg is the first of many big talents we pilfer from there! The prices over here have gone beyond ridiculous.

Aka “Winkle Picker“

I dont buy this whole we cant afford proven premier league players.

I think you’re confusing “what can we afford” with “what risk are we willing to take within our approach to financing the squad”. I’ve no doubt that if we wanted to ditch our current approach we could incur all sorts of rises in running costs. But if we have a model of not overpaying, cutting our cloth accordingly as Wilder’s put it, and not wanting vast differences on wages between individual members of the squad, while at the same time wanting to invest in long term infrastructure, then we will inevitably be fishing in a different pond for players.

Either you accept that, based on all the evidence suggesting so far that this is a good, prudent approach. Or you start comparing against links for Cavani and be continually disappointed.

Maybe that's because you haven't bothered to educate yourself with an awareness of where the club is or isn't financially

Its a shame because it really undermines and disrespects the absolutely amazing job the manager and staff have done in getting us where we are now

I am not talking about going out splashing 40-50m on a player on about 150k a week

I am talking about investing in the quality that we need to establish ourselves long term in the premier league.

And I.M.O our squad long term is not good enough to do that we need to invest in better quality especially our strikeforce which is an area we do struggle in and also attacking midfielders that can take the game to the opposition.

You didn't specifically name any player or cost
You replied to posts stating that callum Wilson on 110 k a week is out of our reach by stating the attitude of some off our supporters is depressing for accepting this
Personally think its depressing that someone can make such an ignorant comment about the club they support

If Wilson was injury free he might be worth the money but he's not and I just don't see us competing financially with the likes of Everton, West Ham et al who will be in for him. Additionally there will be no resale value...all 3 big signings since we came up are of an age where if they come off can be sold for a big profit and even if they dont work out we will recoup a decent amount of what we paid for them.

Wilders job is to try and identify the next Callum Wilson, difficult admittedly but until we've been up a few seasons thats the market we are shopping in I think...young, unproven, big potential players.

The forward weve been linked with in Belgium ticks all those boxes

How is Callum Wilson out of our reach he plays for Bournemouth not Liverpool.

And if we want to strengthen our team we are going to have to pay bigger fees and wages simple as that really.

How is it ignorant? are you trying to say we don't have the money to sign better quality of player and have to make do with scraping the barrel?
How much do you think he would cost? ( transferfee and wages over fours years plus signing on fee) work that out and the fact his pre-sale value will reduce and you will have your answer

... and note, that they're just the direct costs of the signing.

Once you break the wage structure & pay one guy way more than everyone else, other players will understandably demand more for their contributions.

If Wilson came in at 80k a week, McBurnie/McGoldrick aren't going to be happy partnering him on 20k.
Those wage negotiations with Basham & Egan that we're already struggling with, all of the sudden become significantly more difficult and so on...

Wilder's already said, we have to move some players on this season because they can get better money elsewhere. It's sad, but we're not in a position to compete with the big hitters after one season in the PL and with relatively low income owners.

Before the lockdown fees were touted at about 40 to 50m.

I would say anywhere between 20 and 30m now factoring in relegation and everything else that has occurred.

The only risk with Wilson is his injuries, he is a quality player and would be a quality addition to the team.

Wilder is not stupid though he will only bring in people if he thinks they can do a job for us.

It will be interesting to see whowe bring in, i like the fact that we have been linked with young up and coming talent like Brewster for example too.

What the Wilson advocates are really advocating(although they don't realise it) is a takeover by the likes of Goldsands. Those guys bankroll a wage bill of almost 100m at Bournemouth. Our wage bill is probably somewhere between 30-40 million based on the last two years wage bills(promotion bonuses excluded). Our record signing in August, Mcburnie, earns 20k a week according to the court. If you want the wages and the fees what you're really advocating is a takeover. There is no way the Prince is going to advocate signings(particularly permanent signings) in their late 20s early 30s with little to no resale value on huge wages. Dream on.

Wilson on big wages I think
Anyone would be an improvement on Joelinton 🤣

I know its down to Bretford's asking price rather than the player but if Villa went after Wilson over Watkins it might sway his decision if he's been Wilders top target this window and the one before.

Always seemed like a West Ham/Newcastle type player, overpriced and on the way down. Not convinced we were ever a realistic option for him.

Seems a pretty good signing if he can stay fit. I seem to recall Chelsea were sniffing around a couple of years back (when he was in the England squad) and the price touted around was more than double the £20m Newcastle are rumoured to be paying now. Never a serious option for us due to his wages and the fact relatively few other clubs were seemingly in for him is also quite telling.
Saying that, he’s been a reliable scorer over the years and is a significant upgrade on their existing strikers.

Dare I say Newcastle’s signings seem decent so far. Hendrix and Fraser on frees, Wilson for £20M and Holding on a season long loan. All good additions for a small outlay but no doubt on huge wages. I’d expect they will be much better next season.

Newcastle with Lewis, Wilson, Hendrick and Fraser have improved hugely. Palace also with Eze to add to Zaha (sadly still here) will score more. Both of these struggled for goals as much as us last year but have improved creativity and goals. I am concerned we dont seem to have addressed this area (creativity and ability to make chances whether it be a forward or a different type of player, as much as the out and out goals)

I had Newcastle and Palace as the bottom 4 with West Brom and Fulham but both have improved a fair bit at the top of the pitch. Think Villa will do better and are spending loads again and have still kept Grealish. I might be wrong and if they lose him they will be down there again.

I do feel we need that quality striker and could be difference between mid table again and being sucked into a struggle a bit.

I would be more concerned if I was Brighton and West Ham though than us due to our defensive strength.

We won't get Watkins seemingly. Even Villa have baulked at his wage demands so far but we simply cannot afford the package Brentford the player wants. I'm not sure I'm that convinced by him anyway in terms of being worth an outlay. Just a hunch but feel he may not quote the sure fire Premier League hit everyone thinks. I would not be that bothered if Villa or West Ham spend 25 million plus on him.

Newcastle have done some surprisingly good business, for Newcastle! I reckon they will be top 10 next season.

I think Brighton have done some quiet yet sensible business as well and will do better. West Ham will be better. Palace need to do a lot more really but then again they were awful last season and finished 14th. I suspect Villa will be a few places better as well. And Everton. It's going to be harder next season as Leeds will do decently and WBA won't be mugs.

Hendrick & Fraser late 20’s on a free wouldn’t get in our team. Wilson on £100,000 a week with 2 f#cked ACL’s and coming up to 30? Lewis I’ll give you. People yet again flapping over nothing. Eze is suddenly gonna transform that steaming pile of turgid shit that’s Crystal Palace ? If we’d have signed 2 average players like Hendrick & Fraser with their best years long gone, certain people on here would be on suicide watch.

I'm not seeing it with Watkins. He's obviously still young with space to improve but doesn't strike me as anything other than a lower Premier League squad striker.

Bit disappointed we weren't in for Wilson and £20m seems a decent price, however assume wages would be a barrier.

I'm still not concerned but it would be nice to get a couple through the door to calm everyone. I was encouraged by the excellent Beans Blades Pod with Jay of Blades Analytics. Jay thinks McBurnie is going to have a 'big' season and reckons Berge will emerge as a real quality player.

Fingers and toes crossed!

My point was those players significantly improve Newcastle. I did not say we should sign them. They would not work or be worth wages for us but for Newcastle it is solid business. Eze improves a poor Palace side and they will score more.

Those points aside, I am still concerned we have not improved up the top of the pitch but there is still time. I'm certainly not flapping but we need to score more goals and not convinced the current personnel will score enough.

I think it will be a tougher league for sure but we'll see

Eze has never kicked a ball in the premier league but he improves them? Be hopes he plays up front because the lazy f#cker has no perception of what tracking back means. He’s another C Robinson for me, Decent in the championship. Lewis improves Newcastle, but can’t for the life of me see how the others do. Wilson gets his last pay day In between sauntering about and being injured. Bruce and his turgid style deserve that sort of player. Me, I’ll stick with our model. Young and hungry.

For me it's crystal clear, wages, wages, wages! Yes, wouldn't we love an exceptional forward or two, but they come at a premium. Wilder knows this so rather than knock himself out, he builds intelligently, brick by brick, and should we find a lesser known talent who can blossom into that player we need then all the better.

A favourite quote of Wilder's is his Lordship commenting that he and his staff are teachers. The obviousness and significance of this is what separates this club from those who lack the essential qualities that will improve a player. Just consider a player like Enda, in his time here he's developed into an attacking defensive player of real quality. Does anyone think this is accidental? You can say the same about JOC, Egan, George, Bash, Fleck, and Coutts before his dreadful injury.
It's why Wilder's banged on about a far better training facility, it's where the hard work happens, and the results are seen every time the boys make an appearance on the Desso.
