Call-ups galore
Posted on: Tue 18 Mar 2008

A total of five Blades players have been called up for international duty next week.

Gary Naysmith, Keith Gillespie, David Carney, Stephen Quinn and loanee David Cotterill have been selected for the latest round of international fixtures by their respective nations.

Naysmith will join his Scotland team-mates in facing Croatia on Wednesday 26 March, whilst Gillespie's Northern Ireland face Georgia on the same date.

Stephen Quinn is part of the Republic of Ireland under 21s squad that face Montenegro on Tuesday 25 March, whilst Cotterill is in John Toshack's Welsh senior squad to face Luxembourg in a friendly.

The winger thought he may have been selected in the under 21s squad as Wales face Bosnia in an important qualifier.

Carney, the Socceroos Player of the Year, is again in the Australian squad as they continue their 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign. After a comprehensive victory over Qatar, the Aussies now face China on Wednesday 26 March in Kunming.

For me Cotterill deserves it off late, hope he has a good game for them if he plays

He's the only one......:D and by the way its Neighsmith, think of a horse.

You'd think a country the size of Scotland could have found a replacement sometime during the years he's been first choice, if he's as bad as you make out.

Then again, perhaps he isn't as bad as you make out eh? Perhaps the 6 professional international squad managers Scotland have had in that time have more of an idea than you? :)

What did you think to his performance on Saturday by the way?

i think the problem with naysmith was that in a team that isn't performing he tends to struggle aswell which isnt what you want from your captain, maybe the added pressure of been captain was that bit too much as he felt he had to do more and tried too hard?

Now that morgs has been put back as captain and the team has started to get the right results, naysmith has been improved immensley (sp) as he is now back to been a member of the team not someone that everyone else turned too during the game when we were struggling!!

anyone else agree?

I thought Naysmith looked the part on Saturday and i will afford him the same courtesy as the rest that under-performed during Robsons tenure; basically giving him the rest of the season to win me over.

Keith Gillespie played a full 90 minutes in Northern Ireland's 4-1 win over Georgia averaging a 7.53 (between good and very good) on the BBC Player Rater at time of writing...

Gary Naysmith played 62 minutes in Scotland's 1-1 draw with Croatia averaging 5.88 on the Player Rater (between off colour and average)...

David Cotterill came on for the last 16 minutes in Wales' 2-0 win in Luxembourg.

Squinny played the full 90 minutes for Ireland U21s yesterday as they drew at home to Montenegro.

Oh and David Carney played the full match as Australia drew 0-0 with China.

Socceroos said:
In the end, David Carney should have added further salt into the Chinese players wounds in injury time, when he should have scored from close range, but took too much time to get to the ball and was put off his shot.

It's a shame Carney couldn't have added to his international tally. Might have brought some confidence home with him.
