Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill admits he is weighing up whether to recall Gary Cahill from his loan at Sheffield United.

He told Villa's website: "We can recall Cahill soon. We've had people at all his games and he wanted to playing at a club up there challenging and Sheffield United still have the capability of doing precisely that."

Looks like it is because of league position though and nothing else.

Shite excuse really I thought he came to us for regular 1st team footy.

Goals conceded since he's been? points gained since he's been here? he's been as dodgy as every other defender has this season.
Doesn't mean he's at blade for the goals like certain other defenders who i hope to see dropped tommorow. Cahills been quality for us, knows what to do with the ball, has strength and positioning - which has saved us few times with near goalline clearences!
Hope he stays!

i don't want cahill to go he's been quality..how many defenders this season has taken a touch in pressured places and not fucked it up? i can think of one..cahill

I personally disagree, in my OPINION Armstrong is the only defender to have impressed me at all this season, aside from that the rest of the defence (goalkeeper included) and midfield has been a waste of space. I would be happier to see a back 4 of Gage, Holdsworth, Sandford & Nilson tommorrow and Hendrie 80miles back down the m42.

But thats only my opinion and im fast becoming a sour & bitter old man, oh what happened to the optamism of my teens? ho hum

I think that Cahill has done very well considering he has only been at the club for a matter of weeks, he has been the standout deffender each time i have watched him (all home and sky games).

Playing in a team with such low confidence has probably done him no good but i suggest we will see him come into his own as soon as we start to get our act together.

I would be very disappointed if we lost him and if that does happen, i can see him going to one of our rivals and showing exactly the kind of ability that i believe he possesses.

I personally don't see how our league position makes a difference to whether he should be recalled or not, at least MON seems to think that we can turn things around...if only he had shown such favour at Villa Park last year :-)

cahill has played well every game hes played in. He had to fill in at right back against bristol and he didnt do a too bad job.

Ill give you most have been piss poor tizer, geary and armstrong have been o.k.

But your impressive armstrong still gets turned inside out by chesterfield and morcambe players as well as others in our division, his positioning is awful at times and has lead to a few goals being conceded this season.

i didn't think cahill played any better than bromby has done at RB.

Reading an articleby Fatty Samuel in the Times yesterday, saying about England's rigid adherence to player's positions, right back, centre forward, and all that.

"This country does not produce footballers. It produces right backs, central midfield players, centre halves. It has got to the stage where England’s players are not just married to one position, they are married to one way of operating in that position, and to specific teammates around them. Even more incredibly, we indulge this."

Surely then a defensive player should be adaptable enough to play in most if not all defensive positions? And if not, then why aren't we signing and developing academy players who can? Bromby is getting slated for being a bad right-back. Why not just slag him for being poor, what does his position mean? I know we have players who specialise in one position, but look at Geary. He's a quality defender, and I believe only his height has stopped him from playing in the centre of defence.
Our players are mainly performing poorly, with a few exceptions. Maybe the management need to look inward at themselves?

ive played all along the back line for teams, so i can play either fullback or my most common center half.

I know cahill didnt have a great game at RB but i know what its like. You can do the basics but its a different style of play than at centerhalf and you have to change your positioning etc. Bromby has been playing there for ages and been shit, cahill 1 game.

Armstrong has been shifted about but you still shouldnt be getting turned inside out by morecambe wingers, diving in and not staying with your man. Its basics.
