Looking forward to a trip to carrow Road again hope it falls well in the calendar. After we failed to win again yesterday and Cardiff won today to go 5 points clear with a game in hand, they have us Wednesday at there place so they could be and i expect them to be 8 points clear with a game in hand. Even if they do go into administration they could still be above us. Another good away showing yesterday by the sounds, not looking forward to a trip to swillsborough lets hope its not embarrassing like yesterday nearly was. Thanks simo you helped keep it to one in the first half.

In God's name, why? :D

A total of one point from the away games at Ipswich and Norwich constitutes a good return for us.

It is equally true that we could be within 2 points of them with seven games to go.

They have to play us, Leicester, Swansea and Forest in their remaining games. Surely there is a realistic chance that they may collapse again? Swansea dont have the easiest run-in, neither do Leicester. Don't give it up so easily. Its a strange game, football...

but which is the most realistic????

Wishful thinking Dunc. I respect the optimism but that's all it is. This weekend's results have finished us. United have to win at Cardiff on Wednesday to resurrect any slim chance and with our current away form we wont. Cardiff are finding some form again as well.

It doesn't really matter who Cardiff are playing until the end of the season because none of the chasing pack are capable of capitalising on a dip in form. United, Blackpool and Boro have consistently proved that they dont have the stomach for a playoff push. The sides currently in the top 6 could drop a fairly good number of points and still be safe.

Football is a strange game.............but it doesn't give you chance after chance, which is what United seem to need!

Thanks simo you helped keep it to one in the first half.

Simonson made one good save. Aside from that he had almost nothing to do - because Doncaster's finishing was so atrocious....

Anyway, if you listened to Gary Speed as pundit on the Leicester v Coventry match today you'd know just how wrong you are. In actual fact he was pleased with the draw from a United point of view, because it 'kept us in touch with Leicester'. Cardiff should therefore be considered virtually in our pockets a mere 5 points ahead with a game in hand. ;)

Incidentally (and I'm straying badly from the topic here) there was a remarkable statistic quoted by the commentator in that match. The last team to gain two successive promotions to reach the top division, and then avoid relegation from it the following season, was Derby County in 1987.

I was momentarily perplexed.... until I remembered that the BBC exclude United from all positive statistics on a point of principle.

And I always thought there was next season!

Perhaps I should give up too!

Indeed there is always next season and no one is giving up on them fox. I'm just a realist rather than an 'eternal optimist.'

The required haul of points is way beyond our capabilities. We haven't done nearly enough to be in the playoffs at this point and if we were to start now we have left it far too late.

Maybe next season.......we will see ;)

NEVER write owt off when talking about The Blades ! ...... well not until its impossible.

I think we'll bizarrely make it into the PO's this year, despite the weakest squad in ages.

I can see us winning all our remaining home games and maybe sneaking a couple of draws away. I'm expecting Cardiff's yearly collapse to really kick in soon. And we have a very good record there in recent years off the top of my head.

I believe that if you go into administration after March 31st the points deduction is applied to the following season.

If we are "in touch" with Leicester - a mere eight points in front of us with a game in hand - then surely we are also still in with a shout of overhauling Forest - admittedly 14 points in front of us, but with no game in hand.

Maybe automatic promotion is still not out of the question?

Some of the most optimistic posts ever have appeared in this thread.

I say this thread should be pinned for posterity!!! :D

Cardiff on weds will either finish our season or send us on a run.

Beat us and keep up a half decent run of form and a 10 point dedcution could see them in exactly the same place in the league they occupy now!

That wouldn't be enough. United can afford to drop another 6 points at the very most to stand any remote chance.

Not being funny Wards but you're dreaming. But I suppose if we can't be dreamers what else is left

who's to say it wouldn't be enough? No-one is putting any consistent form in outside the top 5 and *if* we can sneak a win at Cardiff then there's no reason why not.

Admittedly it's a far flung hope but I reckon 2nd half saturday could be the kick up the arse they needed, and a shot in the arm for Blackwell. He may well realise he's hanging by a thread and they might as well chuck everything at it in the remaining games.

You can only live in hope ;)

Because it won't be. Cardiff are showing good enough form to maintain a top 6 finish at the moment and I don't see that changing just because they have blown it in previous seasons. None of the sides below are good enough to capitalise and that includes us.

We have 4 home games remaining so if we won all of those (I don't think we will) you're looking at 12 points plus a couple of draws away (as you predicted) which puts us on a total of 14 points from the remaining games. That puts us on 67 points at the end of the season. No team has EVER got into the playoffs on 67 points from memory.

It would only require Cardiff to bag 10 points from their remaining 9 games to finish above us (so the equivalent of 3 wins and a draw), meaning that they can collapse and lose 5 from their last 9 and still finish above us!!!

Still confident???

I'm confident of a Cardiff collapse, so yes, yes I am

This is correct, the lowest points total to reach the playoffs was 70 by Watford in 07/08.
