Long term, if Berge maintains his momentum we'll have a genuine class act on our hands, someone who'll attract some of the biggest clubs around.
We'll either have to extend his contract, something I think we'll struggle to do given the input of his agent plus whatever the player's ambitions happen to be, or look to sell and capitalise on said quality. I hope I'm wrong, but it seems clear as day that our primary ambition is to remain in this division whilst attempting to improve our status. To do that will require more quality players, and as we've seen, whoever we pursue will alert other clubs who will, presumably, offer wages we cannot compete with.
I'm not down about this, but I do feel a realistic view of our commodities and how they can help this club's future is in order.
Wages are one of the biggest considerations we have to think about, assuming that we have ambitions beyond remaining one of the club's regularly fighting relegation. Entering the land of milk and honey never promised an end to struggling, at least not as we've known it, all it meant was that it would test us in ways that some may not have appreciated. It's been well documented what priorities the club has to consider; squad strengthening, improved training facilities, ground infrastructure, and last but certainly not least, wages. These will provide the board with ample opportunity to prove just how capable they are.
It's a fascinating time to follow this club, and the next five years should provide us with the opportunity to see (a) whether we'll still remain a Prem club and (b) whether we can rise to these challenges with the necessary creativity, robust attitudes, and whatever else enables us to get across the line. Having been outside of the Prem for far too long, I hope we manage to achieve these ambitions with a bit to spare.......wouldn't that be special?
