Dirty leeds yet again get themselves involved in one of our targets, and pinch him away from us. slightly annoying that bruce not coming was originally construed as keane wanting him back, but its now clear we wouldnt cough up the extra 100k for him. ah well, lets hope we sign gilbert and he smashes one in against the dirty beggars!

Bruce Joins Leeds !!!

According to reports, the deal with us fell through because we couldn't decide on how the £200K fee should be paid.

Leeds have nipped in and agreed a fee rising to £300K

Not gutted about not getting him particularly but if we're struggling to broker £200K deals, it does make you wonder.

Strange one that.

As much as anything, if we are struggling to pay 200k for a backup centre half, why spend 200k on a backup centre half in the first place.

No great loss. Particularly when that would have been almost our entire transfer budget!

Agreed, trouble is your key point will now be lost in the argument about why some now say he was great when they said he was shit earlier and why some say he;s shit now but said he was great earlier.

Still, as long as we can pay people to fact-find Argentinian development opportunities it's all good.

Yes, I realise this will be fuel for certain poster's fire but as Houso says, it's a strange one. The fact he was apparently at the club on Saturday agreeing terms whilst in the next room they were still crossing the t's and quibbling about a few grand here and there. I can only think that maybe Ipswich moved the goal posts knowing of Leeds' offer or maybe this all happened before Kyle Bartley's injury and we thought he was on his way.

Yes I have to admit I'm not entirely disappointed by this. He would have been a squad player anyway and I sensed it had hit the buffers two days ago when everything went quiet.

It really is a sad state of affairs if we cant afford to pay a fee like that. It suggests one of two scenarios;

a) We have no transfer budget to speak of and can barely afford 200k for one player

or

b) We have a couple of moves lined up for decent fees so cannot afford to spend much more on anyone else

Call me a pessimist but I'm going for A.

Whether you rate the player or not and which ever way the Club now try and spin it. Our manager clearly wanted Bruce and he had agreed terms and was keen to sign. So to lose him to our major local and divisional rival has to be classed as a disaster. It doesn't even sound like we were miles away in our valuation of him, just in the "method of payment". Were we trying to be clever and pay £50K a year for four years instead of just making the deal happen?

Why on earth should our entire transfer budget be only £200K when we've sold Kenny and Sharp for £2M+? We were supposedly willing to pay up to £600K for Nosworthy, so why should that money not still be available? Let's hope this doesn't signal a repeat of the Surman/Mcindoe/Smith debacle from last season.

Disaster? The general feeling on here when we thought he would sign seemed to be he's OK and might have been a decent back-up. Maybe the deal fell through because the club thought he was worth a punt at £200k but not at £300k.

If, on the other hand, £200k is all the money we have, would you spend the last £200k on Bruce?

I think the fact we've got The Noz on loan suggests we weren't prepared to go to £600k for him.

As for Bruce, not at all sad. Never rated him. Will miss the chance to have Bruce Dickinson on the teamsheet though.

Let's remind ourselves of what a tiny proportion of overall costs are made up from transfer fees. Average players earn £500,000 per year. We employ lots of them. Ticket revenue comes nowhere near. What we take in in transfers is only a very small part of the story.

Also, I very much doubt we were ever prepared to pay the reported £600,000 for Nosworthy.

We knew Sunderland were desperate to offload players and Noz wanted to come here, so we held all (or most!) of the cards. We played a blinder - held out a bit and saved 600k. It's the sort of thing we used to be criticised for not doing. Now we do it it's a cast iron sign that we're skint.

Absolutely pathetic. McCheap won't cough up another 100k and we lose our second transfer target to Leeds. Not forgetting that we lost targets to mighty Norwich and Huddersfield. Hats off to Birch for showing his commercial savvy-ness. Ah well, Ertl can play CB. Oh and there's always the loan market of course!

Alternatively it could be that we were looking to do the best deal for ourselves as we could. I don't think anyone would want us to shell over the odds on Spawn of Twat so I'm prepared to give us the benefit on this one. In fact, I think our transfer dealings have been pretty astute in the main. The Walton situation was unfortunate but other than that we've done well.

Second? We talking about Connelly here? Did we actually want him?

To be honest, I'm glad we've not got either player.

Ok then, let's talk about the wages budget as well. Since the end of last season, the following contracted players have been removed from the wage bill:- Camara, Geary, Haber, Little, Reid, Harper, Stewart, Naysmith, Sharp, Kenny and Bennett (11 players) plus the players we had on loan who've not been re-signed Bunn, Seip, Kallio, Bartley and Connolly (5 players). Some of those such as Naysmith and Sharp were on very high "Robson-era" wages.

To replace them we've signed just Kozluk, Walton, Simonsen, Britton, Bogdanovic and Ertl (6 players). So in addition to making a large profit on transfers since June, we've made an even bigger saving on wages. £5M a year according to your estimate. The parachute payments ended in June 2009, so United's income hasn't slumped massively in June 2010. Should United really be incapable of completing a deal for a £200K player?

Ok, so you are currently happy with a back line of:

Kozluk Morgs Nos Taylor

and back of erm ........ France? Lowton? Ertl?

Not particularly, but then I don't think that just because we haven't got Alex Bruce we've decided to say "Sod it, we're not going to get any better. Let's not bother with any more signings"

Has any thought that its not a question of £200k being all the money we have, and considered that this is all the money we thought he was worth?

Plenty more fish in the sea. :fishy:

Exactly, maybe we thought he was only worth 100K and had already pushed the boat out and doubled it to 200K but we thought 300K was ridiculous. Its hardly the end of the world is it

Typical cheap united. Like i keep saying we won't part with a single penny for a transfer fee.

Why dont you stump up the cash then Dave you tight wad

This thread has Len and Mic written all over it. Come on boys where are you?

Rumour has it that they have become so excited by this news that they have had to tug each other off several times before they can begin to comprehend a tirade fitting this thread.

I think this recruitment drive will extend to the deadline. The Prem teams haven't finished trimming yet , there is the waterfall effect of players that they will want to send out on loan.
We just need an injury free time until the end of august there will be alot of players looking to go out on loan .
We can't win the league but we are the run away master club for loans nobody came near us last season.
Despite what McCabe has said ,with a small squad once the injuries hit and unless training methods have changed we could be chasing the title of loan kings again.

Nomark player, wasn't worth the interest in the first place.
Why would anyone be surprised we have no money for transfers?

Even in todays depressed marketplace you don't get much for £200k
Bruce has never been any good wherever he has played and only got regular football where his father was manager!
At £200k that makes him one sixth the player Billy Boy was, or less than a third as valuable as our 'loyal' keeper Kenny!
No thanks Leeds are welcome to him!
Perhaps Graysons next move in the transfer market would be to put in a bid for Ryan France!
