"Bramall Lane has the best atmosphere" - Pochettino

I remember that game me and my dad decided to go (my dad was a true blade ) and after the game he said to me " someone forgot to tell that bowyer lad pigs were supposed to win ":D

I went to that match and you are spot on. All the City players must have done a Bronco Lane / Peter Swan and not included Bowyer in on the deal.:D

I saw plenty of games at Hillsborough from the late-sixties through to the mid-seventies and it always seemed to me that the atmosphere there was poor compared to the Lane. It had a lot to do with there being no roof on their Kop and the place only really livened up when those in the stands joined in - it involved them stamping their feet, as I recall. To be fair, they were a side in decline for most of that period as well. I remember getting soaked on their Kop in 1969 when Man City relegated them and me and my Wednesday-supporting mate then had to walk back into town because there were no buses but for some reason it couldn't quite take the shine off the night for me.

Even though we only had a three-sided ground, our atmosphere was better, particularly at night matches and the 1970 League Cup defeat of Leeds and the unforgettable Cardiff game in 1971 stand out in particular
Great post but the Wendy v Man City match in which Ian Bowyer scored twice to relegate Wendy was in April 1970. Tony Coleman got Wendy's goal

For most of the Spurs game, I thought the atmosphere was absolutely shite. It was good up until they scored, was awful after they scored, then was absolutely mental after we scored.

mind you never saw my dad smile as much after 66 cup final :p
mind you he will be giving the angels some pain about today's team especially if Joe hagans with him

Its something I rarely do, but I left before the final whistle Tuesday, purely for that reason. Didn't mind seeing the Spurs fans at the end, and I wanted to applaud our players too. Couldn't be arsed to clap them Tuesday.

Same here. It was freezing, our players minds were elsewhere, I'd had a long day, and I've had more than my fill of PNE already this season. 86 minutes and out.

2 things Deano's Shorts

Firstly nice avatar - they were proper short shorts

Secondly, I've mentioned this before, but one of the most sickening moments in a football fan's day is when a packed away end jump to celebrate a goal, and there's that split second between seeing them jump and hearing them. You know the noise is coming and there's nothing you can do about it. Horrible. Especially when it's the unclean or the dirties or dingles.....

Welcome BTW.
Oh this. The ones scarred into my mind are Man City when Kinkladze scored a last second winner at the Lane and Blackburn away a few years later when we conceded about five.

It was an equaliser in the 1-1 draw in Nov 1997. It was Kevin Horlock who finished off Kinky's cross

I stand corrected, Silent.

That Coleman goal was a cracker but there was a strange atmosphere all night. It seemed to me the fans were resigned to relegation (despite City's attempts to hand Wednesday the game on a plate).

I'd forgotten that thing they did with the cushions - the team was so poor back then that it happened quite regularly.

I remember it well.

It was in the days long before there was a clock showing the exact time played. I'd occasionally remember to check my watch just as the second half kicked off and this was one of those days and the City goal was scored about ten seconds from the end of normal time. As I made my way to the back of the Kop I then had to put up with an idiot next to me complaining that they'd scored in the fifth minute of injury time. Those clocks and added time boards were long overdue...

For as long as I've loved football, I've not really liked Spurs, no particular reason, just never liked them. Same with Ipswich, although I've since found reasons not to like them as much. But conduct of the team and manager, and of the fans I have met and read on this fine forum have changed my opinion and I found myself pleased that they beat West Brom and I too will look out for their results. A road to Damascus moment, so to speak. Never to old to change an opinion.

Good lad! Spurs have never besmirched the name of football (Well, apart from having Graham, Venables and Rednapp as managers :D) and have not given football fans reason to hate them.

West Ham with their serial cheating, Leeds, Liverpool (who have left their indelible mark on football), Man. U etc.) are all far more hate-worthy.

Here's one they threw earlier...

I remember being sat at the Leppings Lane End watching the League Cup semi final replay match in 1972 between West Ham and Stoke. It was a very boring game that ended in a 0-0 draw after extra time and at the end of the match so many cushions were thrown to the pitch from the North Stand and that was the most entertaining bit of that evening!

West Ham, Leeds, Liverpool and Man U... What a list... Now for that lot I've got lots and lots of good and obscure reasons for not liking any of them. I couldn't even rank them in order of dislike...

My number one cheats would be the Player betting to lose , tax evading , debt de-faulters , safety certificate avoiding , player attacking , council corrupting , World cup bidding fantasy , Gangster owner lot but i cannot think who it is .

I went to that game, too. Stood in that upper corner of the Leppings Lane end. Was Geoff Hurst at Stoke by then? I seem to remember a brilliant bit of skill from him where he left a defender on his backside with a dragback in the box but the keeper saved the subsequent shot. Recall me and my friends being amused by the Stoke fans around us and their absolute hero-worship of Gordon Banks. If I recall correctly, George Eastham was still playing for Stoke. It must have been towards the end of his career but he was a proper footballer and always a pleasure to watch.

In the 2nd leg of that semi final, Gordon Banks saved a penalty taken by Geoff Hurst. My first visit to Wembley was the 1972 League Cup final (on that day Blades were playing in a league match at Coventry that was abandoned due to snow despite that we were winning 2-0 with half hour left) and George Eastham scored the winner for Stoke in their 2-1 win against Chelsea

Hurst was still at West Ham, remember Gordon Banks making a brilliant penalty save in the final replay of that semi-final, taken by Hurst.

Lovely commentary about Banks SEB. Without doubt the best I've seen. I saw Yashin, Simpson (superb at Celtic), Jennings was also a colossus, and Shilton was waiting in the wings when Banks' career was coming to an end, but Banks was the very, very best, and that documentary does justice to Gordon, a truly magnificent player.

Always been poor, just some seasons poorer than others.

nothing wrong with Gordon Banks catcliffe lad:rolleyes:

Gordon Banks was born on Arthur Road, just off Abbeydale Road. The road is still there but has been re-named. It's just below Abbeydale cinema going toward BDTBL on the opposite side.

Yashin , Simpson , Banks , Bonnetti Shilton , all great players , and some memorable performances . One goalie that us fans didn't see enough of , wasn't a national great , but a blade legend - Mel Rees.

What can any of us add to what's already been said about Rees? Taken far too early...tragic loss and always remembered.

It broke my heart. When cruel reality punctures our world of football. My son is a goalkeeper and I tell of him the greats, skill of Banks, Jennings, Schmeichel. And the bravery of Mel Rees.
