Bradford Interview with Clough

To summarise:
  • Training has been good since the Orient game

  • Confidence is good too with only 2 defeats in 12 (think we're ignoring the manner of the Swindon defeat...!)

  • On Jamal Campbell-Ryce:
    • Should have had a penalty against Orient - a "ridiculous" decision
    • Did extremely well in an attacking sense putting in some great crosses...
    • ...but Clough blames him for the Orient equaliser: "he could pick up the lad who's stood next to him at the corner, who then gets a free header"
    • We're asking more of him in a defensive sense and that's taking some getting used to
  • Late goals scored a positive; "it's not like we're only playing in the last 5 minutes"

  • On Neill Collins
    • Dropped for performance reasons - management have reviewed the goals conceded over the last 6 weeks and "there haven't been any improvements"
    • Hasn't seen Clough to find out the reason for being dropped: "he's a 30 year old professional"
    • Changes in defence due to constant mistakes
  • Happy with the squad in general and not looking to make any additions. Clean bill of health, should have the same 18 as against Orient

  • Higdon working hard and the silver lining to the ban is that he's getting some extra fitness work in. Feels that he would have scored against Orient

  • Baxter is in with a good chance of starting and it was unfortunate that he wasn't fit enough to play the full 90 against Orient

  • On Bradford
    • Solid start to the season
    • Expected a better home record from them
    • Players enjoy playing in front of a bigger crowd which Valley Parade should have
  • Lots of points left to play for and glad that some of the tougher away assignments are out of the way early in the season (Swindon, Peterborough, Chesterfield, Bradford [+ Preston, which he didn't mention])

  • Feels that our strength isn't physical - players need to get stuck in but can't go toe-to-toe with the majority of sides in the division, we need to play football

  • Ched Evans
    • this is discussed elsewhere in great depth on the forum
    • the decision is above the football management team
    • not going to discuss with the media or the players until that decision is made
Overall I'd say Clough sounded about as relaxed as he has in interviews I've listened to although he didn't seem to appreciate the questioning of the decision to drop Collins

In a previous interview he said Collins had been defending too deep (with the implication that this was leading to goals against). In this interview, he's suggesting that maybe Collins hadn't altered that so their alternative was to drop him.

Let's hope this is the correct analysis and either Collins corrects it or someone else can do a better job.

We need more clean sheets, starting Saturday.(this management lark is easy)

  • not much good getting them out the way if you have lost the majority off them is it? We can't beat bleeding Orient at Home so no good rejoicing we have got these games out of the way.

Brilliant reply when asked what JCR had to do to get a starting place.
Some of his decisions confuse me but all in all I think cloughie is brilliant!

So Cloughy talks about the Orient game and sticks in comments about Higdon? How he's working hard on his fitness, bla bla, but mentions f'k all about McNulty's contribution in the "Orient" game, nor his well taken goal, nor his willingness to get stuck in, which comes after Cloughs comments questioning players about not getting stuck in!

Shrugs shoulders in disbelief!

So Clough wants JCR at all of 4ft nothing to pick up people at corners when we have an extra man on the pitch anyway ? Sorry that if not beyond belief would be plain laughable.
i think cloughy was saying that cambell-rice should have stopped him having a free run at the cross its called blocking off not a fowl if you just jocky the runner. It happens all the time and once the run is stopped or part blocked the runner has trouble getting in position and the cross eludes the runner and the free header never happens inteligent defending !.

Or alternatively if JCR had stood on the half way line so would two of their players one of which could have been the bloke who scored the free header. Now that's what I call intelligent, not the Weir way of pulling everyone back at corners and leaving no outlet.

cant disagree with a positive attitude like that metalblade

You are right there. Leave one up front they have to leave two back

Including the corner taker, they had eight players within 18 yards of our goal line. We had 10 players in our box.

So they did have 2 defenders back, and the goalkeeper.

Next!

Yes, I think that's what he meant.

I still think it's a risky tactic to rely on our smallest player to stop one of Orient's biggest aerial threats, Romain Vincelot. Vincelot headed in the winner for Orient against Aston Villa a while ago and I don't think it was coincidental that he was the target of that corner.

I thought Mr Clough sounded vey positive in all footballing respects . Ched Evans must be on his way back which is a good thing , in my opinion. Mr Clough says the Ched situation is above football management . With Mr Clough being a man with morals and integrity , i think Ched will be a marked man by Mr Clough. ( look what he did to Butler )., if and when he his back in the fold .

Mr Clough and Mr Clough brother seem to have no say on this particular matter on player recruitment. I think Mr Clough will

Make it very hard for Ched. (outcast) . Mr Clough takes no prisoners ( excuse the pun )

Get rid of Ched if it appears he is no good and not up to it.

Resigns or offers his resignation to the board ,( its Ched or me )

May be way off the mark , but a scoring Ched will get us promotion.

UTB and watch the twist and turns , as it is not over until the fat lady sings.

Clough was screaming at JCR to go back for the corner. JCR looked confused but eventually retreated towards the edge of the box.

last set piece of the game they would have left it 1v1 at the back

Clough needs a result to calm things down.

That was his job, they will have trained for that and they will have expected to play against 11. So its not laughable to expect a man to do his job in the 1st or 90th minute, attacking and defending.

If you didn't notice, its a massive part of how we gained our relative success last season - by not conceding

Fair point! We still had 3 men spare in our box though. Shocking defending, whatever way you look at it.

But we don't defend zonally. we mark the men. Which means that we have spare players to move the ball out of danger if it drops. So when the ball comes in, the spare men are pretty much irrelevant. In my experience they're often more of a nuisance

Whichever way you look at it it is laughable to have the small players like JCR or Scoogs pick up tall opposition players at set pieces especially when we have a man advantage, it really is down to basics that you learn in your school under 11's football team.

What I would look at with regards to the equaliser is that in the last minute away at Orient, the exact same man had a free header in a similar position but put it over the bar. We didn't learn our lesson from that game.

I personally blame the tactics of sitting back and allowing them the chance to force a 50-50 ball in the box, but at the corner he was JCR's man. That shouldn't be the case in my opinion due to the height issue, never mind the fact we have 10 players in the box and we have 7.

I actually agree with him about Collins, he's had a poor start to the season and was costing us too many goals. However, I still believe we need to set up differently when we're not soaking up pressure well. As Clough said in The Star the other day... Play on the front foot. I hope he sets the team up that way at the weekend.
