Can I also ask, it surely can not just be me who believes that Southgate should be removed? Go's to watch Pickford again, but not their to watch Deano, O'Connel, Baldock, Wilson, Ramsdale etc etc! The Blokes just another yes man picking based on reputation!

Southgate has stated a few times that he's keen on a clear pathway for players coming through the England U18s etc and getting them bedded in early to starting to prep them early for major tournaments and build a settled side. The overarching idea being that you foster a club mentality as the players know the system and their team mates having played with them for years rather than a bunch of individuals thrown together carrying baggage from their club rivalries (Rio Ferdinand and a few others pointed to this as being a factor in the failure of the 'golden generation').

I've no doubt this what the FA are after too to see some return on their investment in the St George's Park set up. Obviously there is room for outstanding talent to emerge but ultimately this is why in form players like JOC or Baldock are overlooked while others like Eric Dier are persevered with.

The flaws in this approach are obvious but the FA aren't going to appoint anyone who refuses to embrace this model. If Wilder, for example, went for an interview they'd ask him what his approach was he'd probably say 'I'd pick the best players available to fit the system I want to play' and the process would end there. So essentially if its not Southgate its somebody else doing the same thing.

Falls down a bit though when he's picking Tyrone Mings and Declan Rice, who had no experience in the England set up and aren't exceptional. Declan Rice was Irish and then got straight in the senior team.

Henderson has been through St George's Park, Lundstram and O'Connell were both in the junior England set up. We don't have any rivalries in the Premier League outside of "for position" so what's the issue?

I can actually understand J O'C not being called up yet. He's only had half a season at this level so if he continues this form, he'll be in next. It's harsh, as he's certainly shown more than Stones and Mings this season for instance.

I think Baldock (too many RBs in front of him) and Lundstrum (only had a good half season in the top two flights) are even more understandable.

Stones could go all season not playing senior football.

He would still be selected for the euros.

Mings cost 25m, so that makes him instantly selected.

Surely Southgate's compliance has something to do with his salary of £6 million (or thereabouts)? With on eye firmly fixed on the few available jobs at club level, why would he want to rock the boat? I'm not suggesting that managing at international level is a cushy number (course it fuckin' is!), but given the amount of time he has to assess players, all expenses taken care of, like every other candidate for his job he's only got two competitions to do well in, so he'll have a minimum of four years to either impress or underwhelm.....at least until the next extension of an existing agreement is presented for him to sign.

I'd love to know the criteria employed to assess who's worth a punt.......but maybe that's something that's as inscrutable as the fact that Southgate was selected in the first place.

Tactically, he’s a really bad manager. This shite about how we had a great World Cup is bollocks. Given the run of fixtures we had, semi-finals was the minimum we should have achieved.

People will say, well look at how together the squad was, well that’s great but it doesn’t win you anything. We had three difficult fixtures in that tournament and we lost them all. We didn’t even get close to Belgium in both games and the Croatia game was crying out for a bit of intelligent management to wrestle control of the game back from Modric.

We did well to get into the Nations League semis but even then when it came to a bigger stage we looked lost. Gareth might be great behind the scenes in working together with the group but he certainly ain’t going to win us anything because he lacks the tactical nouse to make game winning changes when it’s getting away from us.

His squad selections are clearly also done on reputation, that’s proven by the fact he’s picking Mings, not just over some of our defenders, but several others in the Premier League. He’s bullshitting everyone, he’s no different to any other manager we’ve had in the past. Theres nowhere near as much of a club divide in this England squad for a start. He’s not really done anything special, he’s basically meeting the minimum expectations of the current setup.

Southgate is not going to solve the midfield issue any time soon if he thinks that either Dier or Rice are international class. That game agasint Croatia was ridiculous - up against Modric and Rakitic he chose a midfield three of Alli, Lingard and Henderson - two defensive liabilities against two of the best central midfielders in Europe.

It was the same against the Netherlands in the Nations League; although at least that time there was a bit of balance to a three of Rice, Delph and Barkley they'd struggle in the Premier League let alone in an international competition.

I’m glad someone else agrees! There’s this myth around Southgate that he picks on form players no matter who they play for which seems to stem from the fact he selected Maguire whilst he was at Leicester. Rice i genuinely think is only selected to try and justify his change of nationality. If Mings transfer fee wasn’t so high he wouldn’t of been selected either
