Bournemouth players complaining about the ref!

This article from 2012 suggests that, in the future, referees' conversations were to be recorded. If that is still the case there should be plenty of evidence to show what was actually said by Jon Moss.

Ref chief Riley backs move to record match officials' conversations

Heated conservations between referees and Premier League players during matches will be recorded and stored within the next month.

Although the recordings will not be made public, the Premier League and FA will use them to protect referees in disciplinary cases in future.

Referees chief Mike Riley is looking to introduce the new equipment in the coming weeks after Mark Clattenburg was cleared of racist abuse towards Chelsea player Jon Obi Mikel.

It's good to talk: From December referees conversations with their assistants will be recorded
That original report was made to the FA by Chelsea player Ramires after the game between Chelsea and Manchester United which was not recorded on equipment used by referees now.

Premier League chiefs are now ordering new equipment so referees performances will be available and stored digitally after games.

The same system is used by rugby referees and their match performances are available for public broadcast during games. But Premier League games will be kept private.

Riley said: 'To reduce the risk of an episode of this nature being repeated PGMOL will introduce recording of the referees' communication system on a private basis.'

Former Premier League referee Graham Poll has welcomed the move although he doubts it will bring an immediate improvement in players’ behaviour towards referees

He is hopeful however that referees will be able to use the facility to improve player management during matches as part of their training.

Poll said: 'What it highlights is that games should have been recorded anyway and the fact it is going to happen now is very sad because it proves that the relationship between referees and players is not as good as it should be and there is a problem of trust between the two parties.

'I hope the PGMO don’t miss out on a trick here. There are incidents where a player goes racing up to the referee to protest and is clearly unhappy, and he is quickly calmed down by the referee. In those incidents the recording could be used and played back as part of referees’ training to demonstrate how it is possible to placate a player who is upset.

'Man management is almost the most important part of the referee’s performance and it could be a great tool to help them.’

Although the system works in rugby, the Premier League believe using recordings of conversations, or shouting matches between players and officials would be counter-productive.

Poll however believes the threat of the recording being heard by Riley or the FA will make players think twice about dissent, and making accusations against referees and other officials.

He said: `When the system was first introduced we met rugby referees who said they used the microphones as a tool to calm players down because, they would point at their earpiece and remind them it is being recorded. So that could work.

'It could also result in more dismissals because players know what they say will be heard back now.

'If there is an incident involving a player shouting and swearing at a referee which is unedifying and offensive and the player has not been sent off, Mike Riley might decide to look and listen to that incident again and ask the referee concerned for his thoughts afterwards.

'So in future matches that same referee may decide to take action and dismiss a player because he knows their conversation will be heard back. And that is not necessarily a bad thing.’

The Premier league said today that cautions for dissent are down by half over the last three seasons and that bookings this season are down 20 per cent compared to last season.

Why is football still a sport where we think it's better for referees if nobody really knows what goes on on the pitch?

I know the major problem is that the language allowed couldn't be aired on most TV shows but maybe it would be nice if we could know why refs make the decisions they do, what they thought they saw when they got it wrong, and how much shit from players they really put up with.

The way the game is currently run is that refs keep peace more than enforce rules. They'll be criticised if they "ruin a game" by giving loads of bookings for dissent or timewasting that result in reds. Take Sunday's game; early on Baldock gets a throw-in and steals a few yards, the ref makes him go back. A few minutes later, a Bournemouth player gets a free-kick, steals a few yards, the ref makes him go back. Each time is met with frustration and complaining from the players. Then, at the end of the game, Basham is fouled near the corner flag, Hendo puts the ball down at the edge of our box. The ref now has to make a decision about whether to move it back, allowing Hendo to waste some time, or let him get on with the game; the ref chooses the latter. Twenty two players have effectively ground him down to the point where they can get away with stealing small advantages.

Other example, it's now become routine that a goalkeeper will take as much time as he can from his first goal-kick in order to set the standard should he wish to kill time later. Because the ref lets it go at 0-0, the keeper has to really really take the piss to get a booking. Take a drink, kick the post, check your boots, dry your hands, move to the other end of the six-yard box to take the kick.

Or the opposition get a free-kick. One player picks the ball up and carries it ten yards, throws it backwards five, a second player comes in and accidentally stumbles on the ball to delay the kick further. It's a booking for kicking the ball away, but if three players combine to achieve the same thing, the ref lets it go.

And NOW, even with Bournemouth taking the piss at every opportunity, surrounding the ref when a decision goes against them, play-acting from thirty minutes in, they still have the fucking gall to come out and say the ref didn't respect them and he might've said something a bit mean.

The absolute state of the game at times is bewildering.

The best refs I ever had when playing were always the ones who you could have a bit of a laugh and a joke with. Sounds like Mr Gosling needs to vent his frustrations somewhere, in this case at the ref. They also get moaned at when they act like robots so they can't have it all ways.

I didn't think the ref was great Sunday but the Bournemouth players using it as an excuse doesn't surprise me at all.

The only thing I saw on Sunday that was different was putting a player on Henderson when he was about to take a long punt upfield.

Why don't keepers kick from further back when this happens, Hendo is more than capable of kicking far enough without having to kick from the edge of his box.
I think it was another time wasting/disruption tactic from them. Strangely after we took the lead they cut it all out.

if reports of comments by ref during the match are correct think Moss will be in some trouble, doubt it's correct though (‘you’re still in the relegation zone’, ‘you’re having one’, ‘your team’s having one ) out of order if true.

Sounds like Gosling is trying to do the typical footballer thing that Warnock talked about in his documentary years ago “footballers will blame anyone but themselves”

I don’t quite get what Gosling is on about with the other comments, but Bournemouth are in the relegation zone and they should be battling for every point possible, not rolling around on the floor

I don’t know why Eddie Howe allows his players to talk like this. Wilder wouldn’t allow his players to make such comments to the press

Probably because Howe is a pussy. It seems like he has this butter-wouldn't-melt air around him, but that quickly changes once his team are shown to be diving, whinging pricks. He was encouraging it on the sideline on sunday, complaining at the ref/fourth official constantly. Sod em, hope they go down now

In my opinion what the referee was intimating was that going down easily seems to be a recurring theme when it comes to Bournemouth.

Listening to this on the Jim White show on Talksprt.

Clinton Morrison is laying into Bournmouth saying it’s just comes across as excuses for losing.
He says he was the biggest culprit regards banter and he was always joking with/ criticising the ref
and usually refs would joke back and say things about how poor he’d played. CM said he verbally gave it out and verbally took it during the match.

Danny Murphy also emailed the shiw saying that the Bournmouth player is embarrassing himself.
DM also said banter between refs and players is normal and gone on for decades.

In fact Jim White and Natalie Sawyer also showed no support towards Gosling and suggested it shows a weak mentality.
Sawyer said everything will have been recorded but they need to listen to what any Bournmouth players might have said to the ref for balance.
White said based on the twitter reaction he doesn’t seem to be getting much support from the general pubkic
and he suggested that Gosling might regret going to the press with this story.

I share your frustration!

It's very unusual for goalkeepers to get booked in normal circumstances and I believe if they were booked at the first instance of time wasting, it would be highly unlikely that they would receive a second, and if they were stupid enough to time waste again they would receive a deserved sending off. Would the goalkeeper or the referee incur the wrath of the manager - I suspect with the majority it would be the referee.

The time wasting with substitutions is beyond a joke. I can see why they don't enforce the shortest route rule, but when you see players taking the micky, ambling off, shaking hands with all and sundry, taking an eternity to hand over the captain's armband, etc, etc, it makes my blood boil. Personally I would ban substitutions in added time - whether players are injured or not - how many times in added time are players taken off for true injuries?

How embarrassing, whatever Goslings motivation, its just embarrassing a grown man complaining because the refs been ‘taking the piss?’ Really? I can’t believe that he would humiliate himself by even mentioning it.

Referees get so much shit from players, I think they’re well within their rights to give a bit back. “But he said we were in the relegation zone?“ fucks sake lad, go home, get your Mrs to tuck you in with your blanky and cry yourself to sleep, the nasty man will be gone in the morning.

I hope Gosling gets absolutely slaughtered by opposition fans at every match he plays, because he certainly deserves it, the big fucking fanny ❄

If it’s true that Moss made comments along the lines alleged, then it strikes me that, if the Bournemouth players had anything whatsoever about them, it should have fired them up to get a result.

Look how Wilder and our players use negativity from outsiders, as motivation to continually prove people wrong.

It seems that certain Bournemouth players just haven’t got it in them.

Think Gosling’s having another one with his decision to moan to the local Bournemouth rag. The journalist is neglecting his duties if he didn’t say that to him at the end of the interview, before informing him the insert for the article will be the bottom of the league table with Bournemouth highlighted in bold.

Seems to be a split on their board about this. Some sticking up for Gosling saying it's a conspiracy to get Bournemouth relegated, some saying he's using excuses

RedHarry sounds like he wouldn't last 2 minutes in the Sunday league.

There has always been banter between refs and players. Players say all sorts to the ref and Gosling is surprised when the ref makes a comment back.

My mate is a ref and refs up to Division 1 level. His biggest game ever was Arsenal v Fulham in the cup. He mentioned about Clint Dempsey (USA International) giving him loads of stick in the game. After a while he had had enough of Demseys niggles and abuse. Dempsey could see he was about to get booked and said "do you know who I am2 to which my mate replied "yes I know all the players on this pitch, its part of my job" Dempsey continued "I have played in two world cups" as the yellow card was shown my mate said "If I was American I could have played in two world cups" and then walked away and got on with referring the game.

Two many footballers are so flakey and how dare anyone (even the manager in some cases) say anything negative against them.

Dan Gosling you should be embarrassed.

Those comments scream we are weak! And we are going down. I don’t think Moss is the best ref in the world , but he did seem to wise up to their falling down all over the place

Well the timekeeping is another thing in football that's played by convention rather than rules. Added time is fairly arbitrary. This is a couple of seasons back, but the ball is out of play, on average, for over 30 minutes of a game.

But my big complaint, and it's been true watching and the low level I played, is that you can get an advantage in football by harassing a referee. You complain about every decision, you steal a few yards on every kick/throw, you waste time, you roll around, and you make it so miserable for the referee to enforce the rules that they let little things go. In no other sport I've played could you get an advantage by behaving the way footballers do.

Edit: There's also this convention in football that players get the benefit of the doubt even when everyone in the ground is sure what's going on. Imagine what would be said about a ref if they booked a player for feigning injury after they'd rolled on the ground and then jumped back up and played on just fine. But any other sport, you'd recognise that players take the piss and penalise them for it. In any other sport I think we'd say, sure, it's harsh if sometimes a player really did take a knock and they got booked, but at least we don't have the play-acting any more. A player has to REALLY take the piss to get a booking for time wasting these days; you can kick the ball five yards away, you can carry it ten yards and drop it on the ground, but in order to get booked you have to kick it twenty yards. Instead of worrying about a few harsh yellows, we could stamp it out of the game and all be happier.

No evidence that Eddie Howe actually encourages such behaviour then.

My previous respect for him has now gone.
In fairness to Howe in the article he did it for the right reason; ie to protect a young player and not to try and gain an advantage in the game.

So,

Admittedly out of character, a usually honest side turns up and decides to start diving about. Surprisingly, it doesn't work. The ref tells them to get up.

Now, they want to complain about the ref?

Shurrup and buckle down and get back to playing honestly.

Find it even more baffling when Bournemouth aren't even in the relegation zone, so..

1) Why would he suggest it
2) Why take offence

Then again, a player giving out because the ref was allowing cheap fouls, whilst seemingly oblivious to their own play acting, I can see why he would take offence.

Usual story.

Footballers can talk to refs like shit but can't take a bit back.

A ref can make a reasonable decision that may not even be contentious but have players screaming in his face. Can you imagine a player missing a sitter and having 3 team mates screaming in his face as a result.

There's refs I'm not keen on and decisions that annoy me but the treatment of refs in general in this country is a disgrace.

Compare it to rugby and it should make the game ashamed but it doesn't. Then again 99% of rugby players will try their best not to show they're hurt, like footballers used to decades ago.

Going back to this. I think a fair comment from the ref regarding them throwing themselves on the floor at any opportunity would be "this is why you're near relegation"
Wouldn't be wrong or out of order. Simply speaking the truth.

Sounds like they have a full team of players who think falling over at the slightest touch is part and parcel of the game. They were getting a lot of the decisions I can remember a few of our players saying it was a joke (not quite the words) when they were getting free kicks and I remember when the ref got wise to it and waved play on and then we were getting the free kicks there was a loud round of applause from our fans for something going our way.

As someone said ref's are miked up so everything they say can be heard by the 4th official, the linesman and the VAR team.

Sounds like sour grapes to me.

Another team blaming everything but themselves for getting beat by poor old Sheffield United.

How probably knows that Wilder hates that sort of thing and could've used it as a winding up tactic to get us rattled. If so, it failed. Miserably.

I think he may have been confused with the ref. telling him about going down (feigning injury) with Gosling interpreting it as going down (relegation).

This all sounds like bollox to me and this Dan Gosling bloke is an embarrassment for even deciding to come out with such shite.
I find the whole situation unbelievable considering the antics of most of the Bournemouth team on Sunday!
If anything, I thought the referee was incredibly lenient and should have booked a fair few of their players for basically trying to take the piss out of him! ALL GAME!!
And then one of their players feels the need to publicly complain about him . . . . . . . . WTF?! . . . . . . Now that really IS taking the piss!!
What a Class A Wanker.

Players cope with all sorts of abuse from the sidelines and get a hefty salary, they should be able to just ignore this kind of thing.

That said, there’s no excuse for a ref saying it, particularly when emotions are high during a game and he’s there’s to keep things calm.

It’s also unfair for a ref to say it in a situation where an understandable comeback off “you’re just jealous because you’re too shite and fat to play at my level so you run around with a whistle you cock” could result in a red card.

Tl;dr - It’s unprofessional to make those comments, if he actually did. But get over it.
